P90 Level B Results

I feel I have finally formed a habit of working out. I aim for 5 workouts a week since with my schedule it can be hard to get them in on certain days. I started level B of P90 on December 3,2014 and decided I would make sure I didn't do any when hubby wasn't home so we would be on the same day. On those days I would do something else usually a yoga or another workout video I have. This was taking too long to complete level B so I went back to working out at my pace. I found there were a few days after coming off my overnights that I just didn't have the energy to do a workout so instead I found myself in bed early catching up on my rest. Rest is super important and I try to listen to my body when it needs the rest.

B was definitely a step up from A and I found it faster paced. Tony knows we know what we are suppose to do and just has at it with us. I love the Mixed Martial Arts, they are fast paced whole body workout moves. If you keep your core engaged while doing each move you will get a great core workout by the end of the workout. When I first learned sprawls I wasn't sure I was a big fan of them but by the end of A I am loving them and find them a lot of fun. They do really make you work but in the end it is a great feeling being able to do a minute of them. Jumping jacks are not my favorite and likely never will be. I haven't found a day that I have jumped for joy over jumping jacks. Tony loves his jumping jacks in many forms I am slowly learning.

The results!

Left Arm = 0
Right Arm = 0
Chest = 2.75
Waist = 1
Middle (across the belly button) = 1.5
Hips = .75
Left Thigh = .75
Right Thigh = .75

Total inches for Level B = 7.5 inches
Total weight lost for Level B = 7.8 lbs

I know this isn't huge but for my body it is big as I had about 25-30 lbs to lose when I started my journey. I am happy to say I have reached my weight goal and now I am working on toning and gaining for strength and endurance. I have noticed a huge upper body strength gain and I couldn't be happier. I have never had this kind of strength in my upper body. I am excited to move into Level C (just started it on January 20!) and finish up P90. The results have been amazing and if I can do this you can also! If you have any questions feel free to send me a message or comment below. I am hoping my journey will help others get on their own.

Bones Never Lie by Kathy Reichs ~ Book Review

Book Synopsis:

In the acclaimed author’s thrilling new novel, Brennan is at the top of her game in a battle of wits against the most monstrous adversary she has ever encountered.

Unexpectedly called in to the Charlotte PD’s Cold Case Unit, Dr. Temperance Brennan wonders why she’s been asked to meet with a homicide cop who’s a long way from his own jurisdiction. The shocking answer: Two child murders, separated by thousands of miles, have one thing in common—the killer. Years ago, Anique Pomerleau kidnapped and murdered a string of girls in Canada, then narrowly eluded capture. It was a devastating defeat for her pursuers, Brennan and police detective Andrew Ryan. Now, as if summoned from their nightmares, Pomerleau has resurfaced in the United States, linked to victims in Vermont and North Carolina. When another child is snatched, the reign of terror promises to continue—unless Brennan can rise to the challenge and make good on her second chance to stop a psychopath.

But Brennan will have to draw her bitter ex-partner out of exile, keep the local police and feds from one another’s throats, and face more than just her own demons as she stalks the deadliest of predators into the darkest depths of madness.

In Bones Never Lie, Kathy Reichs never fails to satisfy readers looking for psychological suspense that’s more than skin-deep.

Review:

This is book #17 in the Temperance Brennan series and the very first one I have read. I am officially hooked. I now want to start from book #1 and learn more about the character development. I found that the author does a great job of making this part of an arch but also super easy to follow along as a stand alone novel. I am really into drama, crime and human sciences so this was right up my alley. When you think they are on to the suspect things take a turn and continue this way right up until the end! It was a hard book to put down as I wanted to know if they had the right person and if justice would be served. I love that part of the story takes place in Montreal Canada which is just a couple hours away from my home town and I have been to some of the areas that are mentioned. It was also fun to learn more about carbon monoxide and how maple syrup is done. Things you don't think would be explained in depth but was. It is a great suspense novel that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The author write the story as it has happened already and Temperance is retelling it. I found the writing to be choppy in areas but once I got used to this I didn't mind it and felt it worked for the story and characters.

I give this a 4.5 stars out of 5!

Review:

This was a quick and easy read making me aware of past and present relationships and realizing these are normal stages of love. The book was written for the everyday person without lots of psychology mumble jumble that can get readers confused. I like how the author uses explains and couples throughout the book to help one understand each stage.  It is a great reference for everyone even if you have been married a long time as we all go through rough times. This is practical advice that really helps put your emotions of love into perspective.

I give this book a 4 out of 5 stars.

The Five Essential Stages of Lasting Love
by Linda Carroll

As a counselor to couples for many years, I’ve come to recognize five distinctive stages we travel through over the course of any intimate relationship: the Merge, Doubt and Denial, Disillusionment, Decision, and, finally, Wholehearted Loving.

Love Cycles and Choices

The first stage, fueled by a delicious and powerful love potion and marked changes in brain chemistry itself, causes people to become obsessed with the wonder and delight of their new partner. Its as though a veil covers our rational brain, and all we can see is what is magical about this person and the relationship. The seductive power of this stage may also cause us to fall in love with an inappropriate partner. With consciousness and effort, we can choose what to do with our feelings. Do we fan the flames of a potentially dangerous fire, or do we control our passion and turn our attention elsewhere?
Even if our partner is a good match, this will not eliminate the difficulties and annoyances two human beings bring to one another. In this first stage, we tend to see only the best, the possibilities, the magic.

If we choose to move with our partner into Stage Two, Doubt and Denial, we wake up from the trance of infatuation and begin to wonder whether this relationship is really the best choice for us. You find your feelings of love are becoming more conditional, power struggles increase and you wonder if your partner has changed. What now? We can choose to look carefully at our partner and assess his ability to collaborate, manage conflict and disappointment and accept responsibility for his choices and troubles. Can we feel strongly attracted to someone and yet admit to ourselves that this person is not a good choice for us? If so, are we able to say no to the relationship?

During this second stage, the spotlight shines on the flaws of our beloved. We now invest a lot of energy in getting our lover to become the ideal partner we thought they would be. At the same time, we also catch glimpses of our own least likeable parts — for example, how we react when our partner doesn’t agree with us. The research clearly shows that managing conflict effectively requires something different than fighting, fleeing or freezing. Can we learn these new skills?

Each of us is forced to give up our dream of perfect, unconditional love in which our partner always sees the best in us, says the right thing, never embarrasses us and reads our mind so that he or she can please us in every way possible.

As our disappointment escalates, so do our biological responses to stress: we prepare for war, retreat, or don camouflage. Welcome to the third stage: Disillusionment. As differences continue to emerge, our proclivities to defend and preserve ourselves may grow even stronger: we may believe that we’re always in the right and that everything should be done our way.

Alternatively, you may be the kind of person who cannot bear conflict. You shut your ears to every dissonant chord and pretend that everything is wonderful — or at least tolerable.

The point is, you have chosen how to respond. You will continue to make choices as you move through love’s stages. As disillusionment sets in, we can try our best to offer goodwill and kindness, even as tension thickens. As the “Why aren’t you me?” argument gathers momentum, we can consciously decide to loosen up a bit and allow more than one truth to be present in the relationship.

In this third stage, when our brain signals major alarm, it is particularly vital to choose to move from reactivity to rationality. When we are calmly present, we are free to act for the highest good of the relationship rather than out of fear and neediness.

Of course, because we’re thoroughly human, we won’t always respond to our lover from our highest selves. Then what? Can we apologize, make amends and take responsibility for how we’ve behaved, despite what our partner has done to upset or annoy us? We have the power to make that choice.

Let’s say that when we reach the fourth stage — Decision— we make the choice to part ways. Can we wish our former partner the best? If that’s too hard, can we at least not wish him or her the worst?

If we decide to remain together, we have the opportunity to learn the lessons that will help to make us the best person we can be, while also giving our relationship the chance to grow and deepen. This is where we enter the fifth cycle, which is wholehearted loving. No longer two halves trying to make a whole, we are two complete people learning about love. Passion, safety and generosity return to the relationship, along with humor and empathy.

From the Inside Out

Some of us are lucky enough to enjoy a strong connection with the same partner for a long stretch. But regardless of the quality of our intimate relationship, our emotional and spiritual life journey begins and ends within us. In this sense, every relationship is an inside job. Inside us is where it starts — and where it finishes, too.

Home vs Gym Workouts

When I first started working out I was talking with a few people about my progress and theirs and one person brought up the question "why don't you go to the gym and workout?". This question was directed at two of us that workout at home from the person who is a gym goer.

Now don't get me wrong there isn't anything wrong with going to the gym but I am not a gym goer. I like to go out for walks on a local trail or walk on my treadmill. I am now in love with workout dvds that are super easy for me to squeeze into my day and get a really great workout in. If you have been following my journey so far I have been getting great results at home.

When we were asked this question we had a good defense. Here was the our list:

* gym involves others seeing you in your workout clothes and your trouble areas bouncing around for all to see
* being all sweaty and having to shower somewhere that isn't home or having to driving home all sweaty sucks
* the commute to get to the gym especially for some as it could be a 20 minute drive just to get there and another 20 to get home
* membership costs
* time away from the family or just hard to find the time that the gym is open since we don't live close to any 24 hour gyms plus add the commute time on there

Now we both were all for our workouts at home. Our reasons:

* no commuting!
* no monthly membership, costs for dvds but they can be used over and over again. There are also lots of free workouts online (another blog posts in the works)
* once finished you can shower and relax without having to go anywhere
* no one is watching you
* no waiting on equipment to become free to use
* don't need a babysitter if you have children
* no wasting time looking at foreign equipment and wondering what the heck you do with it

There are lots of pros to going to the gym also, like bigger/more complex workout equipment and weights that you may not be able to have at home due to cost and space. Some people find that they can only get the motivation if they go to the gym. There are also the trainers and classes where you can learn what you are suppose to be doing.

I would love to try a few classes at a gym but I know it will be hard to match my schedule with the gym class times. Until I can work that out and find a buddy I will stick with my at home workouts.

Do you workout at home, gym or both?

A Sudden Light by Garth Stein ~ Review

Book Synopsis:

When a boy tries to save his parents’ marriage, he uncovers a legacy of family secrets in a coming-of-age ghost story by the author of the internationally bestselling phenomenon, The Art of Racing in the Rain.

In the summer of 1990, fourteen-year-old Trevor Riddell gets his first glimpse of Riddell House. Built from the spoils of a massive timber fortune, the legendary family mansion is constructed of giant, whole trees, and is set on a huge estate overlooking Puget Sound. Trevor’s bankrupt parents have begun a trial separation, and his father, Jones Riddell, has brought Trevor to Riddell House with a goal: to join forces with his sister, Serena, dispatch Grandpa Samuel—who is flickering in and out of dementia—to a graduated living facility, sell off the house and property for development into “tract housing for millionaires,” divide up the profits, and live happily ever after.

But Trevor soon discovers there’s someone else living in Riddell House: a ghost with an agenda of his own. For while the land holds tremendous value, it is also burdened by the final wishes of the family patriarch, Elijah, who mandated it be allowed to return to untamed forestland as a penance for the millions of trees harvested over the decades by the Riddell Timber company. The ghost will not rest until Elijah’s wish is fulfilled, and Trevor’s willingness to face the past holds the key to his family’s future.

A Sudden Light is a rich, atmospheric work that is at once a multigenerational family saga, a historical novel, a ghost story, and the story of a contemporary family’s struggle to connect with each other. A tribute to the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest, it reflects Garth Stein’s outsized capacity for empathy and keen understanding of human motivation, and his rare ability to see the unseen: the universal threads that connect us all

In the summer of 1990, fourteen-year-old Trevor Riddell gets his first glimpse of Riddell House. Built from the spoils of a massive timber fortune, the legendary family mansion is constructed of giant whole trees and is set on a huge estate overlooking Seattle’s Puget Sound. Trevor’s bankrupt parents have begun a trial separation, and his father, Jones Riddell, has brought Trevor to Riddell House with a goal: to join forces with his sister, Serena, dispatch the ailing and elderly Grandpa Samuel to a nursing home, sell off the house and property for development, divide up the profits, and live happily ever after.

But as Trevor explores the house’s secret stairways and hidden rooms, he discovers a spirit lingering in Riddell House whose agenda is at odds with the family plan. Only Trevor’s willingness to face the dark past of his forefathers will reveal the key to his family’s future.

Spellbinding and atmospheric, A Sudden Light is rich with unconventional characters, scenes of transcendent natural beauty, and unforgettable moments of emotional truth that reflect Garth Stein’s outsized capacity for empathy and keen understanding of human motivation—a triumphant work of a master storyteller at the height of his power. - See more at: http://books.simonandschuster.ca/Sudden-Light/Garth-Stein/9781439187036?intcmp=#sthash.09NGNx23.dpuf

Review:

This is the first book I have read of Garth Stein's and I absolutely loved this story. It is really different from what I have been reading. I haven't read a ghost/spirit story in a very long time but this one was really refreshing. It wasn't at all scary but it was super intriguing. I was super busy when I started to read this book and it took me a lot longer than normal with all the life events going on but it was a really easy book to pick up from where you left off and not be lost on the storyline. Trevor is a very mature 14 year old and Serena is not my favourite character at all. I actually really liked Grampa Samual and felt really horrible for him to be cared by Serena. She always seemed like she had other intentions for everyone in the family. The history behind the family and their house is a fabulous story and one that I don't think would be typical. It was super believable and I love how the author has Trevor telling the story about when he was a boy staying with his dad at Riddell House. The writing style flows well and holds the readers attention with great detail and kept me wanting to know more about Ben and Harry along with the rest of the Riddell family.

I give this book a 5 out of 5 stars and can't wait to read more by Garth Stein.

Review: This review is a special review written by my son P, who is 8 years old.

The story was sad. Timber is my favourite character in this book. I think Timber is a good character because she has glowing eyes. I like the part when Timber was born. In the story Timber's parents disappeared in boxes that were special on her birthday. Timber and her friends had a big adventure. Timber had a difficult time to get her parents back. Timber made a friend on her journey, it was a tall man named Staffle, he is a nice tallwert. When the darkness was in the world a few tallwerts were bad. I give this book a 4.5 stars out of 5 and can't wait to read more about Timber's adventures.

No New Years Resolutions Here

I have never really been one to make New Years resolutions as I always felt horrible for not sticking to them. I also felt like I was setting myself up to fail with things that were hard to keep. I instead make goals and this year is no different. I am making the goal of to get my eating habits in even better shape. If you have been following me on Instagram or even seeing the fitness posts here you will know I have started a healthy journey at the end of August last year. This included relearning a healthy portion size and what is best to jump start and keep my metabolism working in fat burning mode. I started off with The Food Lovers Fat Loss system (I promise the review is coming!) and then I proceeded to move my way into cleaner eating. I have lost 23lbs and more than 20 inches total with this nutrition. I don't like to call it a "diet" as I find people think of that word as yucky food or starving yourself. I have done the opposite. I eat every 2 to 3 hours and I love everything I put in my mouth. I do have cheat meals or treats here and there. The holiday season was harder but I am happy to say I only gained .5 of a lb and that I know is from my baked good. Mainly banana bread and some shortbread cookies. Oh and a few haystacks!

I don't want to say I will never ever eat anything that comes in a box again because lets be realistic sometimes it is faster and easier when working overnights but I am working towards getting back into my meal prepping and having foods already prepared a head of time in the fridge or freezer. I think I may actually get back into posting my Meal Plans on here again to hold myself accountable. Let me know if this is something you would be interested in seeing on here. I am also going to be slowly adding my clean eating recipes.

Next week I will be posting more about what my goals are in my clean eating challenge. As for workouts, I will be finishing up level B of P90 very soon. I have 5 more workouts left and then I move on to level C, 25 workouts. Once level C is done, I have officially completed P90! I am super excited and I am sure I will miss Tony Horton's MMA and his humour. I will not miss the jumping jacks! As for what is in store after P90 I am not 100% sure. I would love to do the 21 Day Fix Extreme, Insanity Max 30, Piyo or Les Mills Combat & Pump (which I have sitting in my livingroom waiting for me to give it a go). I am still going to push myself to workout 5 times a week and continue to improve my strength and health with fitness.

What are your goals or resolutions for 2015? Are you looking to improve your health and fitness?

HISSY FITZ by Patrick Jennings ~ Signed Book Giveaway (US/CAN) & Review

Book Synopsis:

Children’s Fiction: Ages 7-9

A moment ago, I was happily napping on the windowsill in the sunshine, dreaming I was flying through the air, catching sparrows in my claws.

Now I’m awake. Georgie woke me. I wouldn’t do that to her.

A popular middle-grade writer moves to chapter books (ages 7-9) with this humorous tale about a cat that makes Grumpy Cat seem cheerful. Perfect for fans of Geronimo Stilton and Dog Diaries.

Hissy Fitz lives with some two-legged creatures who are destined to serve him in every possible way and understand his every whim. Sadly, these creatures are sorely lacking in their skills. For one thing–they touch him when they want to touch him. Don’t they know that the two-legged are there for him to touch when he wants to–meaning when he wants food? Petting wakes him up! They speak to him–don’t they know the two-legged should be seen–so Hissy knows where to order food–and not heard! It’s becoming intolerable. What is this irascible cat to do?

Hissy Fitz is now tweeting as @thehissyfitz – please follow him!

Review: This is a review from my son, who is 8. This is his first review on my site and he is super excited to be able to review chapter books on Genuine Jenn!

My favourite character is Hissy because in the story he took a girls shoe! Hissy is a cat and the story is all about Hissy. Hissy got sea sick on the boat Sid lives in, who is another cat. Sid is one of Hissy's friends. She lives on a dock. Her person is a fisherman but she says he's not her person. Sid works to catch mice. I felt like I was in the story. It was really well written for me to feel that way. The book was really good and funny. I give this book a 4.5 out of 5 stars!

My son could not stop talking about this book. He explained all about the characters and what they were doing and also how he felt he was there with them. He loved it and finished it in a couple sittings over the Christmas break. I love that the author was able to draw in my sons attention with this story and had him hooked from the first page.
