Author Spotlight Interview with Reed Abbitt Moore

Today we had a chance to sit down and chat with Reed Abbitt Moore read on to learn more about Piggy Sense! and what Reed is working on now.

Hi Reed, welcome to Genuine Jenn. Tell us a little bit about yourself and why/what inspired you to write? When did you start writing?

“I have been writing since I was a teenager. I loved, and still do, to write poems. Writing is like painting with words, the paper is the canvas, the pen is the brush, the words are the colors and the verbs, nouns and adjectives are the blending of the hues that add depth to the picture you are creating.

What was your inspiration for ‘Piggy Sense! Save it for a rainy day'?

The economy and a desire to see it change. It seems as though people are borrowing further and further into their future. We cannot leave this burden on the backs of our children! We are coming to a point of breaking the economics of this country and perhaps even the world!

The best way I can see to change it, is to change the way our children view money. Money is a symbol of value, but how we spend it reflects our values. You can tell a whole lot about a person by how they earn money, but even more by the way they spend it!

What three words would you use to best describe Piggy Sense!?

Educational, wisdom, frugality!

Can you tell us if you’re working on anything else at the moment?

Yes! I’m working on getting two more books out at the moment “The Zoo Is a Rockin” that teaches children that going to sleep has its rewards and “Jibber Jabber” A story that teaches it is sometimes better to listen than to talk too much.

What was your very first book that you wrote?

The Crimson Feather. I’m still editing this book and plan on releasing it someday…

Other than your own, what are your favorite books?

I’ll tell you my favorite authors, I love J.R.R Tolkien, Edgar Allen Poe, Dr. Seuss, H.G. Wells so many.

When you are writing do you like to listen to music? What is on your playlist?

I love to listen to classical music or nature sounds.

Who is your favorite character in your books?

Jibber Jabber. She learns a lesson and implements the solution.

Do you ever take characteristics or nuances from close friends or family when working on character development and if so has that friend or family member noticed and what was their response to it?

I wrote Jibber Jabber on a whim, and then read it to my sister. After listening to the story and laughing hilariously, she looked at me and said, “That story is about me isn’t it!” Now every time she refers to the story she calls it Blather Mouth, which I think is a good name for the book in itself, however, I’ll stick with Jibber Jabber.

What’s your favorite treat?

To make someone smile!

What’s your Favorite place to read/write?

Anywhere I am I fell is a good place.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

I love the mountains and will always live near them. They are an old friend.

Tru & Nelle by G. Neri ~ Middlle Grade Book Review

Book Description:

Long before they became famous writers, Truman Capote (In Cold Blood) and Harper Lee (To Kill a Mockingbird) were childhood friends in Monroeville, Alabama. This fictionalized account of their time together opens at the beginning of the Great Depression, when Tru is seven and Nelle is six. They love playing pirates, but they like playing Sherlock and Watson-style detectives even more. It’s their pursuit of a case of drugstore theft that lands the daring duo in real trouble. Humor and heartache intermingle in this lively look at two budding writers in the 1930s South.

Review:

This is a great book that is fiction but based on some true events between authors Tru Capote and Nelle Harper Lee. I love Breakfast at Tiffany's and read Harper Lee's To Kill A Mocking Bird back in school, it is on my to be reread list. I think this is a great book for younger children and anyone who enjoy these two authors. It gives us a fun glimpse into the lives of two very famous authors when they first meet and start writing.

When I received a package of middle grade books to review, my son and I decided who would read which and this one ended up in my pile. He now has it in his to read as he saw how much I was enjoying it.

The two kids meet and they could not be any more different from each other, Tru is very clean and  proper, not fitting in with the other boys. Nelle is a tomboy through and through! She reminds me of Annie, tiny but tough. Doesn't mind getting her hands dirty and loves a good adventure. Tru loves to solve mysteries but isn't a fighter, he's a story teller. They both love to read Sherlock Holmes mysteries and have their very own adventures together.

This is a fun novel about a time during the great depression and the kids having fun with their imagination. I love how these two play together and become friends. Tru is left with family while is mother is doing her own thing and his father is trying to come up with a great scheme to make them lots of money. A fictitious memoir.

I give this book a 4.5 stars out of 5. A great read, I am sure my son will enjoy it.

Review:

I really enjoyed this book. The book is about Acea who woke up in this room with Five doors that are different animal habitats. My favourite character is Acea because he was very courageous and he never gave up on his mission to save The Animal Kingdom. My favourite part in the book was when Acea found his inner animal in the safari because it was very hard for all the animals and Acea to find his inner animal but they never gave up. This book got me hooked in about 7 pages in. It was hard to put down. I think this book is appropriate for the age group. I rate this book 5 stars.

The Pharaoh's Cat by Maria Luisa Lang ~ Middle Grade Book Review

Book Description:

The Pharaoh’s Cat, narrated in the present tense by the cat himself, is the story of a free-spirited, quick-witted stray in ancient Egypt who suddenly finds himself with human powers joined to his feline nature.

The cat immediately captures the attention of the seventeen-year-old Pharaoh, making him laugh for the first time since his parents' death, and is brought to live with him at the royal palace.

The cat also becomes friends with the High Priest of the god Amun-Ra and seeks his help in solving the mystery of his human powers and the supernatural manifestations that later plague him. He has an enemy in the Vizier—the Pharaoh's uncle and the second most powerful man in Egypt. The Vizier hates him for himself and even more for his relationship with the Pharaoh.

The cat participates in festivities at the royal palace, developing an insatiable appetite for good food, wine, and gossip. He later accompanies the Pharaoh on a trip through his kingdom, all the while renewing the Pharaoh’s ability to enjoy life and inspiring him to become a stronger leader.
Between the cat and the Pharaoh a bond of love gradually forms which will determine Egypt's destiny.

The Pharaoh's Cat imaginatively blends Egyptology with comedy, drama, and even time travel--the cat and the High Priest will meet Elena, a resident of the twenty-first century and the daughter of a renowned Egyptologist.

Review:

I really enjoyed this book. My favourite character is Wrappa-Hamen the cat because when the vizier went to this bull that people would ask a question to like "does the girl i like, like me in return?". When the vizier came Wrappa-Hamen put all the food into the "no" chamber so that when the Vizier ask his question it would be no. My least favourite character was probably the Vizier. His name was Ca-ca mut. I dont really like this character because he try killing Wrappa-hamen. My favourite part is when the High priest named Gato-hamen and Wrappa-hamen met Elena. Because Wrappa-hamen thought in his head, how could so many people fit in the TV when it was playing music. I recommend this book to kids around 9. This book was really easy to follow because I really enjoyed the book it was hard to put down. I give this 5 stars.

Kyle Evans and the Key to the Universe by Rob H Hunt ~ Middle Grade Book Review

Book Description:

Some kids love adventure, and dream of being a hero. Ten-year-old Kyle Evans is not one of those kids, but when a giant hole appears in his bedroom and swallows his mom, a hero is what Kyle must become.

Kyle sets out on the journey of a lifetime, and discovers along the way that Battle Droids are scarier than Search Droids, Kranken are more terrifying than either of these, and you should never stand still near a Burgly Bug. But more important than any of this, Kyle learns that sometimes a cat is not just a cat.

Kyle Evans and the Key to the Universe is the first book in a quirky adventure trilogy that takes a boy, his cat and his friend Sofia across the universe, gradually revealing their amazing destiny.

About the Author:

Rob H. Hunt is the author of Flicker and Kyle Evans and the Key to the Universe. He loves to write stories about ordinary kids who find themselves in extraordinary situations, like Joel (FLICKER) who wakes up one day and discovers that nobody know who he is, or Kyle (KYLE EVANS AND THE KEY TO THE UNIVERSE) who learns that his cat is not really a cat at all.

Rob loves to read (too many books to mention!), watch TV, drive his bright red car (but not at the same time as reading or watching TV) and spend time hanging out with his family. Speaking of family, Rob lives in Connecticut with his wife, three sons and pet goldfish.

Review:

I really enjoyed reading this book. My favourite character is Bootles because he is a funny cat. My least favourite character is the Commander because he wants to get Bootles. My favourite part in this book is when Kyle and Bootles get sucked into a hole in Kyle's bedroom. Then they find themselves in a spaceship. This book contained lots of robots trying to find Bootles because he is a main point/key to the storyline. This book was very easy to follow. It was pretty hard to put down because I really wanted to see what happened next.I rate this book 4.5 stars. I would recommend this book to my friends and kids around my age (9 yrs).

Next ~ This year my goal is to work on meditation and mindfulness. I have been working on my yoga practice and thought that I really need to work on my meditation. At the end of January I was very unfortunate, slipping on ice twice in 24 hours. Each time I fell I put down my right hand to catch myself. The second fall I really hurt myself but thought with rest it would heal. I was mistaken and had to see my family physician, who told me I had acute right periscapular muscle strain, in English, a hurt shoulder muscle. It hurt so bad that even sneezing would kill. I have spent a lot of time at the massage therapist working out that muscle strain. Now I am working on gently stretching and eventually building my muscle up again. I was lucky in the end that is the only damage I did to my shoulder. Both the therapist and doctor said it could have been way worse.

This has really made me slow down. I am left handed but I have learned so much about how I am very right dominate for mostly everything I do except eat and write. I learned to slow down even more and let people help me. The kids and husband helped out a lot when I needed it. Even just pushing a grocery cart or helping to bring in the groceries, carrying laundry baskets to the machine for me. This also meant I had to slow down on the computer. I am still working my way back into more time online but in smaller sittings. The muscle I hurt is the big one that helps hold your shoulder blade in place, the most of my pain is in the lower shoulder blade. Typing, clicking a mouse etc is felt right back there. Our bodies are one amazing thing. Everything connected in some way or another.

I have slowly started back into my fitness, missing out on my workouts has been very tough. I have learned that fitness to me is a must. It is my happy pill. I find I have more energy and I am less stressed when I get my fitness in daily. It also helps my joints and my lower back pain. I will be starting a yoga program February 29th. I am just trying to pick between The Ultimate Yogi 108 day program or PiYo. I am leaning towards The Ultimate Yogi because of the meditation and huge variety of yoga workouts. This is also a program I have had to review but keep starting it and then moving on to something else. I will commit to a program and will work on updating here to keep myself accountable. If you want to cheer me on or become accountable please send me an email, tweet or comment below. Would love to work with you on getting healthy and fit in 2016!

Next on the update! My son, Parker, as some of you may have seen some of his reviews on here and photos. He has decided to get more serious about his reading and blogging. He has restarted his blog Mr. Park's Adventures and will be sharing daily fun and reviews. He is also talking about doing some writing, short stories and maybe even some videos. I am one proud momma! If you have the chance please check out Parker's blog and say hi!

#
Writing ~ This was put on hold while I was mending but I am really hoping to start working in some writing time a few times a week to start and then go from there. I have a short story started but I am not sure I want to finish it. I may post what I have and see what you all think. Maybe I will finish it. I would also love to work on extending Miranda and Brad's story.

That is all for now. I hope you are having a great start to 2016!

Review:

My daughter, Abby loved reading this book. She said that Esmerelda is awesome and liked that she included Eric in playing with her and her friends at recess. They made a new friend after inviting him to swing with them and he was happy. Abby also loved that Esmerelda has two black cats. She didn't like that Annie was mean at the beginning to Eric but in the end she was also playing with him and taking turns on the swings.

Abby did find some of the words a little hard but we read it together. She gives this book a 5 out of 5 and can't wait to read more of Esmerelda's adventures.

Review:

My daughter loves to draw and colour so I knew she would love to check out this book. The book has a 101 started drawings that the reader/artist can finish how ever they see fit. Then the can leave them as is or colour them. There is a wide variety of pictures to draw and can take the imagination all over the place. Some of spaceships, people, animals, country settings so much to draw. This is great for all ages, the author recommends 8+ and my daughter is 8, she enjoys it a lot. This is especially great for people who would like to start drawing but don't know how to get started or just fun like writing prompts but it is a drawing prompt.

My daughter and I give this book a 5 star!

Here are a few of my daughters drawings.

Apple Banana Bread with Rice Flour ~ Recipe

Here is another recipe from the Grain Mill blogger Challenge back in late 2012! Wow, has time really flown by. I had this recipe sitting in the blogs draft folder since then!

Our Family favorite bread is Banana bread and we have a go to recipe that I have been using for years. This recipe I came across one day in a fundraising cookbook for Bell Canada from 1999. I picked up the cookbook in a thrift store as I saw a few dinner recipes I was interested in trying out.

It is a really simple and quick recipe and your family will be sure to love it.
First you will need to use your WonderMill to make rice flour. I used 2 1/2 cups of white rice to make 2 1/2 cups of rice flour.

Ingredients:

3/4 cup white sugar
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup margarine
2 large bananas, mashed
2 eggs, beaten

1 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp vanilla
2 1/2 cups  rice flour
1 cup milk
1 large apple, peeled, cored and chopped

Directions:
  1. Preheat oven to 325 F.
  2. Cream together white sugar, brown sugar and margarine.
  3. Add mashed bananas, eggs, baking soda, baking powder, vanilla and salt.
  4. Add rice flour and milk alternately.
  5. Stir in apples.
  6. Bake for 1 hour.

Lizzie and the Guernsey Gang by April W. Gardener Book Review

ADD TO GOODREADS
Book Description:

Lizzie Browning loves nothing more than her tiny, island-home of Guernsey, but when German bombs drop on her crystal beach, her peaceful world explodes. For months, the big war in Europe has been nothing more than stories in the paper, but as the enemy takes over Guernsey, the war rushes to her doorstep. For Lizzie, younger brother Andre, and cousin James, the time to escape is now, and they know just how to do it.

Phillip Seifert, the odd boy from down the street, has all the markings of a genuine Nazi-lover. Lizzie knows better than to trust him, but he somehow manages to weasel his way into James’ good graces. Phillip joins the gang in their audacious escape plan, and Lizzie can do little more than pray he doesn’t get them all shot. But Lizzie soon learns that God doesn’t always answer prayers in the way she expects. He might actually plan for them to live under Nazi rule…forever.

I read this book during the January 2013 book of the month in the Astraea Press Book Club on Facebook.

Review:

This is a great grade school book that takes place during the Nazi take over. This book is the story of the kids and what they experinced during this historic event. I believe this is a great novel for kids ages 9+ to learn about history of the Nazi's invasion and how kids in that time lived through this horrific time. The author does a great job on the story line and keeping things feeling real, the characters are very well developed and complex. You feel like you are part of this time in their lives.

I give this book a 4 out of 5 stars.

About the Author:

When I gave up teaching, I began to write about what I knew the children had enjoyed reading: a modicum of magic, a sprinkle of the surreal, a pinch of peril, a touch of time-shift, and strong characters with whom child readers would identify and champion. With intricate and unique plots, twists and surprises, the recipe for mystery and adventure was created.

To date, I have written eight children's novels and one children's poetry collection. They are all suitable for readers of 8 - 12.

I also write short stories for adult readers. Many of these have enjoyed success in writing competitions. I have compiled three short story collections and I am currently working towards producing two more. Also available is anthology of humorous adult poetry. I write serious poetry, too.

Take one of the most significant milestones in a child’s life―potty training―add loads of silliness, and the result is the perfect book for the toilet-training set (and their parents). Potty Palooza is a fun and informative step-by-step guide that kids will love to hear read aloud as they sit on the potty.

Written from the perspective of an eager and curious toddler (and, unlike other potty-training books, designed to teach both boys and girls), this charmingly illustrated book celebrates every successful trip to the bathroom with a “potty palooza” and stars an endearing and quirky cast of characters: potty hippos, who gather when you use too much toilet paper; space aliens, who zoom in to try to use your potty; a wild elephant; and the Poop Police, who issue Mom or Dad a ticket for sounding too silly when singing the “Potty Song.”

Toddlers will giggle as they learn the answers to all their questions: Will I fall in? (No, you’re way too big.) How often will I be using the potty? (As often as you feel like you need to poop or pee.) Is it true that everyone poops, even the president of the United States? (Yes, everyone poops!)

The book also includes fun poop and pee facts, a parents’ guide written by a board-certified pediatrician, and a potty chart with stickers to track progress. It’s for every child ready to make a real bathroom breakthrough.

Potty Palooza can be purchased on amazonchapters indigo and bed bath & beyond.

Review:

So in being completely honest. This book is busy, almost too busy for my 2.5year old. My son recently completed his potty training, and i'm so excited to be out of diapers, i thought he would enjoy this book, but there's almost too much context for his age.

Our review:

Curious George is a favorite in our home, so I had no doubts my children would be excited to receive this to review.

George is asked to take part in a space mission, but upon return he gets a bit lost and in his typical George fashion makes new friends and new memories on his journey through africa as he reconnects with the man in the yellow hat.

George makes his usual mischief and my animal obsessed two year old loved watching George interact with his new friends in the jungle.

I as a parent actually enjoyed this installment more than the second, but shh, don't tell my kids that ;)

Jasper & Joop by Olivier Dunrea

Jasper likes to be neat. Each morning he tidies his nest and puts on his cap and bow tie. Joop likes to be messy! Each morning he rumples his nest and musses his feathers. Despite their differences, Jasper and Joop are two very good friends--birds of a feather! But what will happen when one friend gets into trouble with some busy bees?

Another pair of darling goslings make their debut in this story, with Olivier Dunrea’s perfectly pitched storytelling and illustrations that Gossie&Friends fans have come to cherish.

Jasper and Joop can be purchased on amazonbarnes & noble.

Our review:

This is our first story from this author, and I understand there are more in the series called Gossie and Friends. It was a cute short read, no story line with the exception of description of these two friends being polar opposites. My two year old really enjoyed it, and has added it to his night rotation.
