The Guardian, a Sword, & Stilettos (The Enlight Series Book One) by Kristin D. Van Risseghem ~ Book Review

Book Description:

Zoe Jabril could be just another 17-year-old girl attending parties with her friends and checking out cute guys—except her best friend is a Guardian Angel, and the boy she crushes on is a Nephilim, half-angel, both sent to Earth to protect her. A high school classmate happens to be a trendsetting shopaholic fairy. And now there’s a new werewolf in town.

Zoe has to deal with her feelings toward Shay, who spreads a strange electrical current through her body every time he touches her. Now Zoe is under constant attack from demons, trying to kill and stop her from fulfilling the Prophecy: a girl will be born who will unite the Enlightens to battle evil. Then on top of that, between boring homework and drama with girls at school, she has to control new found talents if she’s to prevent the devil from escaping Hell.

In order to do so, Zoe must devise a kick-ass plan ASAP or watch everyone die, because she’s running out of time. She turns eighteen in two months—the date Armageddon kicks off.

Review:

I really enjoyed this paranormal fantasy YA book, it was on the lines of a coming of age with Zoe finding out when she turns eighteen she may be the Prophecy and will have to save the world from the Satan. Angels, half human/angels, fairies & a werewolf all play roles in protecting Zoe throughout this book. I love how easily the author incorporated each character into the "normal" teenage life that Zoe didn't even have any idea who these people really were. Throw in some demons and a romance and this book has it all in the paranormal genre.

The characters are easy to like and feel connected with, while the story moves along at a nice steady pace. I couldn't put down this series as I really wanted to find out what would happen next.

I give this book a 4 out of 5 stars. I look forward to the rest of the series.

Book Review by Carmen:
If you like any of John Grisham's books, give this one a go; I really enjoyed it. Here you get a glimpse of the situations people are born or thrust into, and how they cope with it. Some of the characters turned out differently than I expected, with some relationships being restored along the way as well. I ended up giving this a four star rating and got a copy in exchange for an honest review.

But Miss Chattoway’s answers to her daughter’s questions are vague at best and Alice begins to wonder if she will ever discover her mother’s secret.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Kellyn Roth

Kellyn Roth lives with her parents, two little brothers, incredibly needy cat, and faithful border collie Gidget on a ranch in the country. She has been reading obsessively since she was seven, writing poetry and short stories since she was eight, and writing novels since she was ten. Her goal is to write historical fiction novels (which slight branches out into other genres) with Christian themes. Her debut novel, The Dressmaker's Secret, can be bought on Amazon. As you know, I’m an author, and so I’m constantly dreaming up novels.
MY NOVELS
My current project is The Chronicles of Alice and Ivy, a series set during the 1870s and 1880s. Each novel revolves around one of two twins, Alice or Ivy. I’ve published Book One, The Dressmaker’s Secret, and hope to publish Book Two, known as Ivy Introspective, in 2017.
At the same time, I have several other novels underway. One is The Lady of the Vineyard, a short story set during the 1930s. I hope to finish it in the next few weeks. Another is The Progressors, a fantasy/steampunk novel, which I am outlining.
Yet another is a fantasy novel, Caught in a Spell, which I have written the first few chapters of, though I’ve decided to set it aside until later notice.

My Review by Kris Metoyer

The Dressmakers Secret” by Kellyn Roth
Miss Claire Chattoway is a single mother and subject of town gossip.  The Dressmakers Secret is a historical fictional book, placing us in an era where men still courted women.  Mr. Parker courts Miss Chattoway and a proposal soon follows.  She almost accepts, realizing her daughters need a father. I get the impression most of the society are wealthy.  The writer introduces the characters of butler, maid and cook to emphasize status. The undertone of the book is faith and family.  A proper lady is expected to be married when having children.  Claire remains heartbroken by love, and her controlling father. Her daughters Alice and Ivy are young and inquisitive.  Alice starts asking questions about her father.  Ivy becomes very ill, and her mother seeks comfort in the power of prayer.  The children get invited to stay at Lois Elton of Pearlbelle Park’s Castle.  Alice begins horse riding lessons from Mr. Knight whom resides at the Castle.  He remains an important man in Alice and Ivy’s future.  His character develops embracing heartbreak and a new beginning.  The plot moves along nicely providing an unexpected ending. The Dressmakers Secret is parallel to current events.  The elements featured contain a single mother, heartbreak, blended families, controlling parents, and the need to hold status in society.  I was pleasantly surprised to realize this was a young historical fiction author.  I read the author’s biography after finishing the book. Her characters are complex and consistent.   The next book is in the making.  I give this book a solid 4 stars.  She writes with the heart and depth of an adult.  I hope she continues to write and share her wisdom.  I received this book in exchange for an honest and unbiased review

One Upon a One Night Stand by Dori Hoxa ~ Book Review

Book description:

Five friends. Five stories.

Welcome to The LOVER Show. Let's begin with L:

Have you ever tried not liking a guy when your best friends decide you should like him? How about if that guy had the sexiest ass on the planet, and was your birthday-cake one-night-stand with icing on top?

London Reeves agrees that three years is a long time to live without sex, but one steamy hot night could never last longer than the morning after. Yet her four lunatic best friends disagree on that last one. The voices in her head disagree, too, and even her mother seems to think she's crazy. And sexyass will not take a goddamn no for an answer. Now what exactly is a girl to do against that?

Author bio:

D.N. HoxaDori Hoxa is a translator with a law degree, who works in marketing, and writes. She's also married, and since her plate wasn't full enough, she decided to get a dog recently, and named him Happy. Her biggest influence is Harry Potter, and she still expects her Hogwarts letter to arrive in the mail every day.

She writes at all times, during lunch breaks and morning coffees, and right after she gets home from work. She begins to write the moment she imagines her main character, without knowing anything about the story first; says her words like to surprise her, so she can surprise her readers.

Dori currently lives in Pristina with her husband and little Happy.

If her coffee mug is still half filled by the time she goes to bed, she knows she wrote something good. Her mug is her husband's worst nightmare ever since he found it next to his pillow one morning, staring at him while he slept. Dori still claims to have no idea how it ended up there.

Review:

4 and 1/2 stars !

I love love LOVED every minute of this book !

On her 27th birthday London goes out with her best friends Olivia, Valery, Eden and Ronnie (together their names make the 'LOVER' show). That night, she does something she's never done before, she takes a guy home for a one night stand. The sex was a mind-blowing 10 she tells her friends later.

I've said it before, I'm not a big fan of sex in novels but here it was entirely permitted (it was also only one time in the beginning of the book). There was one big loooong excruciating build-up towards the act itself and one of the best, if not the best, that I've ever read in a book. Absolutely swoon-worthy. And Liam, oh Liam, he is one hot piece of man candy ! He has the most delicious brownies (London's words), and he's got that V that I find such a turn-on, but he's not only the best God made on earth to look at, he's also attentive and considerate, he's funny and patient, he likes playing scrabble and adores brownies. You simply can't not fall for him.

London doesn't even know his name and she doesn't expect to ever see him again, but of course Murphy has something to do with it. She tries to resist the attraction though and although he keeps looking her up and they have the best time together, she does everything she can to keep him at arm's length. Their attraction was so sweet and they are so cute together. Her friends could see it, I could see it, only London doesn't want to admit it.

The writing is just so good and funny, and I was also a fan of the different little me's (angry me, horny me, happy me and smart me) that are present in London's head and pop out and made comments from time to time. If I were to borrow her internal voices, then ANGRY ME would say: I can't believe this novel only counted 174 pages, it was so much fun it should have been longer; SMART ME would say: the story was perfect the way it was but it's far from being over, there's still several other stories to read of the LOVER show, next up is Olivia and it seems she doesn't have such a light-hearted story; HAPPY ME would say: it was so good, maybe I should read it again; and finally HORNY ME would say: Liam was divine, I want to lick his brownies too!

Review:

This is the first book I have read by Kate James and is the second book in the K-9 trilogy (I am going to read the first book soon!). I really enjoyed this tail (hehe). I am a huge dog lover and also love what the K-9 unit dogs do to help serve the public. They are very brave! Throw in a redhead vet and a tall dark handsome police officer and we have a fun romance with a little mob crime included.

Kate writes this story with a lot of love and passion for animals. It flows very well and keeps you wanting to see what will happen next. I love how well researched this book was to give us a real understanding of a K-9 dog and how they work with their handlers. How could one not fall in love with Rick? He has a heart of gold and a head on his shoulders at such a young age for a guy. The romance that Rick and Madison develop is a sweet one with the struggles of both of their careers, family and beliefs. I loved this story and can't wait to read the rest of the series to learn more about the other characters.

I give this a book a 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Causing Heartbreak (Unbroken #2) by Regina Bartley ~ Narrated by ~ Audio Book Review

Book Description:

Sometimes in life we can’t help who we fall in love with, no matter how hard we try. No matter what type of person they make us become. Wren Porter knew that first hand. And when an unexpected person comes into her life, it forces her to feel, something she hasn’t done in a long time. She thought it was too soon, and that she wasn’t ready. What she didn’t know was that love doesn’t come when you expect it or when you’re ready. It came crashing in at the craziest of times, and when you thought you’d never be able to love again.

Would she ever fully recover from the boy that would forever cause her heartbreak? Because the green-eyed boy wanted her whole heart and nothing less?

It’s time to stop running, stop hiding, and start learning where the true escape lies. Everyone will face heartbreak, but not everyone will find love.

Review:

This book was very hard to listen to at the beginning because of the topic it is heart breaking. Wren is pregnant but is not with the baby's father, Dane. She has had a crush on him for years but bad boy Dane has never seen her as anything more than his sisters friend until a drunken night. Wren approaches Dane about the pregnancy and he acts like he doesn't have any responsibility to Wren or the baby. Dane ends up dying from an overdose and the story really gets interesting. This is a tale of love, loss, finding oneself and rediscovering a true love. It was beautifully written, I will say though that sometimes I was sad at how immature Wren seemed to be as she was hung up on this kid crush and felt the need to be faithful to Dane even after he passed away. The narrator Aundrea does a great job with this novel switching between the characters with changes in her voice for the males and females. I didn't feel like she was reading the story but getting into each character and their feelings.

I give this book a 4 out of 5 stars.

About the Author:

Hanna is the bestselling author of the Bound romantic suspense series and the Dark Angel fantasy series. Although she writes in more than one genre she can’t write a book without weaving together a complicated plot and filling it with twists. She writes what she believes: good people can do bad things, ordinary people can do great things, and choose love above everything.

Eternally restless, Hanna has lived in Indonesia, Australia, Germany, Scotland, England, Croatia and Ireland – everything she owns fits into one suitcase. She’s planning her next move with her gorgeous (and understanding) partner right now. If not writing, she can be found wandering a dusty market in Marrakesh or trekking a mountain in Peru, often using her travels as settings in her novels.

Review:

Another fabulous novel from author Hanna Peach. Paper Dolls is an amazing new adult suspense with a whole lot of twists and turns that are hard to see coming. Aria is on the hunt for her sister, Salem, who she hasn't seen in three years. They share a haunting past that we only get bits and pieces of throughout the book.  It is a dark, gut wrenching tale of sexual violence. Peach has woven this story so many different ways that you will be on the edge of your seat wondering what actually happened in the past, who are these beautiful sisters and will Salem and Aria reconnect after the heartache. I don't want to give away anything but the author writes quite a shocker of an ending, keeping me wanting more from this series already.

I give this book a 5 out of 5 stars for a well-written, steady paced, psychological suspense novel that will leave you really thinking about life and what people have been through and the strength it takes to overcome it.

The Flame and the Arrow by Emigh Cannaday ~ Book Review

Book Synopsis:
Aspiring rock star Annika Brisby thinks she knows where her life is going until she steps through a broken portal that leaves her stranded in a realm of fairies, vampires, and other mythical beings. Unable to return until it's repaired, she's rescued by wood nymphs who believe her sudden arrival is no accident. After being taken in by a prominent family of elves, Annika finds herself struggling to resist the seductive spell of their youngest son,Talvi. Equal parts arrogant and alluring, the notorious heartbreaker seems like the perfect distraction for her homesickness. Her new friends warn her that she'll probably regret ever laying eyes on him, and what begins as a casual fling quickly burns too hot to handle. By the time Annika learns the consequences of their forbidden trysts, Talvi's already under her skin and dangerously close to her heart. But on the journey home she discovers that there's a mountain of secrets that he's not telling her, and Annika can't help wondering who's really in danger.

Book Review:
Annika Brisby is free-spirited soul with a passion for cooking and making music. Although her path in life is still to be determined, she knows her road doesn’t involve minivans driven by soccer moms or anything “traditional or borring.” Annika is desperately seeking her place in the world, and an impromptu trip to Bulgaria may be the very key to discovering - may be there isn’t a place on earth for her.

After accidentally falling through a closing portal, Annika finds herself in another mythical realm with wood nymphs, elves, unicorns and every other creature only known in fairytales. But, this is no children’s book, and these elves are not short, cookie-baking elves. This romantic story is about self-discovery, and accepting who you are.

This author has an incredible imagination, and a talent for character building. There are a few minor areas for improvement in regards to writing. However, this was the author’s first novel, and I haven’t had the pleasure to read most recent works. And, trust me - I will. And, if escaping into a magical world with a witty, female human that has absolutely no filter, this is your book. I’m going give this one a 3.5 stars with a possible upgrade after devouring the rest of the series.

Book Review by Carmen:
This was an enjoyable book for me, even though there were unpleasant scenes in it. There's quite a bit of description when Shannon Clark and Chris start travelling; I also had a feeling I knew who Travis Clark was dating, and I turned out to be right. I like how Shannon takes charge of her life. I gave this book a 5 star rating, and got a copy in exchange for an honest review.
