Potty Palooza by Rachel Gordon ~ Kids Book Review

Warning: This book contains bathroom humor.

Take one of the most significant milestones in a child’s life―potty training―add loads of silliness, and the result is the perfect book for the toilet-training set (and their parents). Potty Palooza is a fun and informative step-by-step guide that kids will love to hear read aloud as they sit on the potty.

Written from the perspective of an eager and curious toddler (and, unlike other potty-training books, designed to teach both boys and girls), this charmingly illustrated book celebrates every successful trip to the bathroom with a “potty palooza” and stars an endearing and quirky cast of characters: potty hippos, who gather when you use too much toilet paper; space aliens, who zoom in to try to use your potty; a wild elephant; and the Poop Police, who issue Mom or Dad a ticket for sounding too silly when singing the “Potty Song.”

Toddlers will giggle as they learn the answers to all their questions: Will I fall in? (No, you’re way too big.) How often will I be using the potty? (As often as you feel like you need to poop or pee.) Is it true that everyone poops, even the president of the United States? (Yes, everyone poops!)

The book also includes fun poop and pee facts, a parents’ guide written by a board-certified pediatrician, and a potty chart with stickers to track progress. It’s for every child ready to make a real bathroom breakthrough.

Potty Palooza can be purchased on amazonchapters indigo and bed bath & beyond.

Review:

So in being completely honest. This book is busy, almost too busy for my 2.5year old. My son recently completed his potty training, and i'm so excited to be out of diapers, i thought he would enjoy this book, but there's almost too much context for his age.

Jasper & Joop by Olivier Dunrea

Jasper likes to be neat. Each morning he tidies his nest and puts on his cap and bow tie. Joop likes to be messy! Each morning he rumples his nest and musses his feathers. Despite their differences, Jasper and Joop are two very good friends--birds of a feather! But what will happen when one friend gets into trouble with some busy bees?

Another pair of darling goslings make their debut in this story, with Olivier Dunrea’s perfectly pitched storytelling and illustrations that Gossie&Friends fans have come to cherish.

Jasper and Joop can be purchased on amazonbarnes & noble.

Our review:

This is our first story from this author, and I understand there are more in the series called Gossie and Friends. It was a cute short read, no story line with the exception of description of these two friends being polar opposites. My two year old really enjoyed it, and has added it to his night rotation.

Kite Day: A bear and Mole Story by Will Hillenbrand

On a windy spring day, what do Bear and Mole decide to do? Why, fly a kite, of course! But first they have to build one. They design, measure, and finally construct their kite. With a zoom, zoom, zoom the kite soars up, up, up in the air. But when a storm rumbles in --SNAP!--the kite string breaks! The chase is on as the two friends tear after their kite and find it in a tree, protecting a nest of baby birds from the rain. This sweet story makes a perfect read-aloud for preschoolers.

Kite Day: A Bear and Mole Story can be purchased on amazonWill's websitechapters indigo, and barnes & noble.

Our review:

An adorable story about a bear and a mole out flying their kite on a windy day. This has become a favorite in my daughter's rotation, and my son enjoys the repetitive words and following the kites whereabouts!

Nugget & Fang by Tammi Sauer

In the deep ocean, tiny Nugget and big, toothy Fang get along swimmingly—until Nugget’s first day of minnow school. There Nugget learns that minnows are supposed to be afraid of sharks! To regain Nugget’s trust, Fang takes desperate (and hilarious) measures. But it’s not until his big sharp teeth save the entire school that minnows learn this shark is no foe. Fantastically stylized artwork adds even more humor to this undersea story of unlikely friendship.

Nugget and Fang can be purchased on amazon, and barnes & noble.

Our review:

My 4 year old really enjoyed this story. It's a great story about acceptance, and judgment. Nugget is told he should be afraid of his friend Fang just because of who he is, so Nugget slightly distances himself from his friend, but his friend Fang doesn't give up trying to be Nuggets friend, and in the end saves the day. We all really enjoyed this one, and my daughter has added it to her nightly rotation.

Review: (This review was written by Abby)

I love this movie because its about HALLOWEEN!!!  It has Halloween episodes with the Littlest Pet Shop gang. My favorite characters are Zoie and Blythe.  In one of the episodes, Blythe had to take care of Russell for a night at the littlest pet shop.  When Russell had to stay at the littlest pet shop with Blythe they had a lot of fun. Two pets from the littlest pet shop heard that Russell got to stay at the littlest pet shop for a night. Inside the DVD package you will get a Penny pumpkin carving stencil.

Review:

I learned to sew back when I was just a little older than my daughter by a friend's mom. I think I was about 10 and we were doing a sewing 4H course. Fast forward to when I had my daughter I decided to learn to sew again and made a quilt. Then my machine got put away with the crazy busy life of toddlers. Now that both of my kids are older I wanted to pull out the sewing machine again. My daughter also wanted to learn to sew so we were very excited to read Get Set, Sew.

This book is for beginners and geared to kids but I absolutely love it and wish I had it years ago when I was teaching myself to machine sew again.  The book starts out with learning the sewing machine and each part of it, along with tips and sewing safety! We went over these two pages a couple times to make sure we knew what we were doing. Then we learned about how stitches work and how to thread the sewing machine! This was prefect, I love how easy this was to follow. Next learning to fill a bobbin and now learn to sew! The pictures are very big and bright and I found them great for kids and even adults. Everything is laid out nicely with numbers for each step.

There are many fun and easy beginner projects. If you are looking for advanced projects this isn't the book. These are perfect for a beginner or someone just learning to get crafty. There are projects to make pillow pals, bags, a cover for the sewing machine and even a bunch of zipper pouches! Zippers are really not that hard to learn but they are intimidating for sure. Jane makes learning to sew a breeze with this new book!

My daughter has learned a lot about sewing and has a list a mile long of things she wants to make in the future. We plan on doing more sewing for the holidays.

We give this book a 5 out of 5 stars and look forward to more books by Jane Bull!

We had finished pictures but I can't seem to find them after having to get a new phone. :(

The Wild Swans Retold & Illustrated by Jackie Morris ~ Book Review, Guest Post & Giveaway!

The Wild Swans
Retold and illustrated by Jackie Morris

This very beautiful and lyrical extended version of the fairy tale 'The Wild Swans' by Hans Christian Andersen is the much anticipated companion to East of the Sun, West of the Moon. With strong characterization of the heroine and also with more rounded characterization of the wicked stepmother than in the original version, and with delicate watercolor paintings throughout, this is both a wonderful story and delightful gift.

About the Author:

Jackie Morris lives in Pembrokeshire, Wales, with children, dogs and cats. Ever since leaving college, Bath Academy of Art, at least one cat has watched over her while she works. Big cats and small are a passion in her life, and it was while reading and watching her cat Pixie sleeping in winter that the idea for I am Cat came about. Guest Post by Jackie Morris

In The Wild Swans there is a dog. Her name is Shadow. She was written first, before she was painted. She’s not in the original tellings of The Wild Swans. I wrote her into the text because I wanted Eliza to have something of her mother always with her. From the minute she came into the story I knew exactly what she looked like. She walked in, centre stage and draped herself around my imagination. Shadow, huge deer hound who lives first as Eliza’s mother’s faithful hound, then Eliza’s constant companion, magic dog.

From the first day I painted her something strange happened. A week later my friend came in to my studio where I was working and said, “ Jac, I need to ask you something. Kait has to find a home for Ivy. Do you want her?”

My dog Bella is old. I had decided that I wouldn’t have another dog until Bella died. Without hesitation I said, “ Yes.”

Ffion suggested that I think about it, but I had thought about it for 5 years. I had met Ivy when she was a puppy. She’s the sister of Ffion’s smooth black hound, known to many as “The Eelhound”.She’s like a cottage sized deerhound. Deerhounds were bred for hunting deer and wolves and lived in castles. I live in a cottage. So, “Yes” had to be the answer, even though Bella is still alive, because when Ivy was a puppy I had so fallen for her. ( Best just add here that Bella has been fine with Ivy, and having a younger dog is bringing me back to fitness, which is good. I walk more with the Grey Dog, Ivy than I had been with my old beauty)

Ffi had taken Ivy out from the dog’s home with Belle, for Kait because Kait’s dog had died. And then it had snowed so Kait was stuck on the side of a hill in the snow and Ivy spent the first six weeks with Ffi, and we would walk the dogs on the beach and tuck them into jumpers when the wind blew hard. But then the snow melted and Ivy went away, even though I had wanted her to stay, but I had 6 cats at the time and 3 dogs and two children and a small house.

So the next day we went and we picked up Ivy and since that day she has been my Shadow.

In the book Shadow watches silently over Eliza, guards her and guides her, keeping her safe. She asks for nothing, but is given love. Unconditional love. Because Ivy came to me there are so many more pictures of Ivy in the book than there would have been, and because Ivy is my Shadow she comes to events with me when I am working with The Wild Swans.

And even as I write this she curls at my feet. Now Ivy wants her own book, and next year, for a start we will be making a calendar together, not just of Ivy, the Grey Dog, but also with The White Cat. Because for me, now, these are the days of the white cat and the grey dog.

Review:

This is such a beautiful book. I fell in love with the watercolor pictures throughout this book. It is an amazing story of love, silence, magic, and courage. Eliza and her brothers are put through so much in their lives, losing their mother, then being locked into a tower with a maze outside, ultimately losing their father to another women because he didn't trust her with the children. There is magic within this story as the brothers are turned to Swans during the day and boys at night. Eliza wants to save her brothers but need to make a pact with a fae to break the spell on her brothers. It is a sad story of loss and growing up on her own, so much courage Eliza has. She shares her time with a hound named Shadow that was her mothers dog. Love finally finding Eliza. A must read!

Author Spotlight Saturday ~ Meet Stephanie Ward

This week I am excited to introduce everyone to Stephanie Ward! Please say Hi and enter the giveaway Stephanie is so kind to offer a Genuine Jenn reader.
Tell us a little bit about your book(s) and yourself.

I'm a new children's author who recently released my first book, Wally the Warm-Weather Penguin. It's the story of Wally, an Emperor Penguin from Antarctica who doesn't like being cold. When he learns about the Galapagos Islands, he sets sail immediately in search of warm weather and discovers a world of tap-dancing crabs, hundred year old racing tortoises and diving birds with bright, blue feet. The brilliant illustrations by Ecuadorian artist Vanessa Landin bring the unique animals of the Galapagos Islands to vivid life.

I've been writing in various forms over the last 20 years, including over 15 years in Marketing and Public Relations at Amazon and Fujitsu, writing everything from press releases to white papers, executive bios to product blurbs. I finally decided to focus on writing children's books and have been doing so for the last two years since moving to Sydney, Australia with my husband and young son.

When was your first book published?

I published Wally the Warm-Weather Penguin in April 2014, but I figure it took about 10 years to accomplish that. I started writing stories while traveling and decided that some day I wanted to be an author. It took a couple of years (while back in a full-time job) to decide which story to finish and then actually finish it. I originally decided to pitch publishers so another year went by finding appropriate contacts, polishing query letters and learning the process. I realized quickly that the traditional publishing process would take a very long time so I decided to go the independent route. I hired an illustrator, had the manuscript copyedited, built a social media platform, created a website, learned to format an ebook, etc. Throw in a new job in Paris, a relocation back to Seattle, a baby and a move to Sydney and there goes 10 years! But “some day” finally came and I left the corporate world to focus on publishing Wally the Warm-Weather Penguin. The rest is history, or actually, the future!

Are you currently working on anything?

Two new editions of Wally the Warm-Weather Penguin -- a paperback edition and a brand new version for older children -- are scheduled for release at the end of the year. In addition, I'm starting work on an app for Wally which is a whole new learning curve but a very fun process. And in the midst of all that, I'm writing the next adventure for Wally. There are many fascinating (and warm) places in the world that Wally wants to visit, so stay tuned!

Why did you decide to become an Author?

I think deep down I always wanted to be an educator so writing is a way for me to teach children something about the world around them. I hope my travel experiences and the unique places I write about inspire a curiosity (and maybe a bit of wanderlust) in kids.

I also want my books to be a way I can give back to the places that have inspired me. In the case of Wally the Warm-Weather Penguin, a portion of the proceeds are donated to the Galapagos Conservancy (galapagos.org), an organization that works on various projects supporting the conservation of the Galapagos Islands and its indigenous species.
Who and what inspired you to write?

Visiting Antarctica and being amidst Emperor Penguins in the icy conditions made me wonder why they didn’t just pack up and go somewhere warmer. A couple of months later, I was in the Galapagos Islands and saw a colony of Galapagos Penguins hanging out on the beach, swimming in relatively warm water and there was the story: What if an Emperor Penguin learned that he could live on a warm, tropical island?

When you are writing to you like to listen to music? What is on your playlist?

I don't usually listen to music when I write, but I recently worked with a talented Australian singer and songwriter named Alicia Wolfe to create a song for the upcoming Wally the Warm-Weather Penguin app. I am truly inspired by the instrumental version that evokes sun, sand and warm breezes...and it always makes me smile.

Who is your favorite character in your books?

Wally has a friend named Gomez, a Galapagos Islands Penguin, who actually doesn't appear in the current edition of the book but has a great role in the upcoming version for older children. Gomez is the guy that everyone loves -- he wears the latest fashion (in this case a classic Galapagos tourist t-shirt), knows everyone and is always in the right place at the right time. Everyone needs a friend like Gomez.

Do you ever take characteristics or nuances from close friends or family when working on character development and if so has that friend or family member noticed and what was their response to it?

I'm pretty sure Wally is my husband. My husband loves to travel. He has an insatiable wanderlust that has taken us around the world and back, literally. Our honeymoon was a yearlong trip around the world (actually twice around to make sure we always stayed in warm weather). We visited 33 countries on all seven continents, including Antarctica and the Galapagos Islands which inspired Wally the Warm-Weather Penguin. I'm also now wondering if chasing the sun for a year also had something to do with this book...Wally is a warm-weather penguin after all. I'm not sure my husband realizes this (I sure didn't until you asked the question!), but I'd bet he both agrees with and would be flattered by the comparison to Wally.

What is your favorite book of all time?

Long before Oprah picked it as a favorite, I had Anna Karenina at the top of my list. It's over 700 pages but I was disappointed that it ended.

Tell us in one sentence why we should read your books.

HEXBUG Aquabot with Fishbowl ~ Review

HEXBUG Aquabots are these amazing little fish that move around in water. They "swim" around and turn directions when they bump into a side of the fishbowl. My son received a blue Shark that he just loves! He is already waiting to pick up a couple more to have "friends" for his Shark. I will give you for warning if you have pets, watch the kitty very carefully around a fishbowl of water! Our kitty was going to go fishing!

The robotic fish comes with its on fishbowl that is portable for kids to take it with them wherever they go. It is easy to fill and empty. The HEXBUG Aquabot comes in two styles, the Shark or the Clownfish and ten translucent colors. You can purchase them separately to add to your fishbowl.

The HEXBUG Aquabot is powered by electro-magnetic propulsion. It swims around along with diving up and down. I  really like that it is equpped with an automatic on and off sensor that activates when you submerge your fish/shark in the water. After awhile (I believe 5 minutes) it will shut off unless you tap the fishbowl side. They take two button cell batteries AG13 (LR44) which are included but you can also purchase separately when you need them.

Check out HEXBUG website for more information and connect on Twitter @HEXBUG and Facebook.

SmarTrike Product Review

All new SmarTrike touch steering bike trike

SmarTrike is sold at Toy`s R Us, and retails for $169.99. This bike has some incredible features including the ability to convert to different stages as your child grows. It`s best suited for your child from 10 months to 3 years.

The website, shares the bikes features in a detailed 2 minute video as well as the link to your local Toy`s R Us.

Let`s start off by talking about;

The assembly.

Here we are with the contents straight out of the box.

Too cute not to share. It was a family affair!

The rest of the credit must go to my husband René.

The final product. The assembly took approximately 15-20 minutes (with children helping) and it was fairly simple to assemble.

One step was missing in the instructions, the seat needs to be removed from the frame in order to properly screw in the crotch strap. Simple to do, but a pain to add in once the rest of the bike is assembled and you realize the crotch strap is still sitting on the sidelines.

The ride.

Well there was very few complaints from either one of my children. By few I mean my three year old wanted to know when it could be her turn :)

Here we are in stage one.

Stage two

Stage three

Stage four

Switching through the stages was a very simple process, and you can remove the parts as fitted for your child`s needs. You could leave the padded seat on during stage two, the only difference is the strap, harness vs waist. Switching the front wheel from stroller mode to trike mode is as simple as pushing a button and rotating the wheel 180 degrees.

The features.

This lightweight trike comes in 3 different color patterns; black and white, red with black and white, or purple with black and white. It also offers a comfortable padded seat, and the neck guards on the harness strap were an appreciated bonus. Suspension for those bumpy sidewalks, the wheels are rubber not plastic. Safety bar is large and roomy, your child won`t feel confined and can still wiggle comfortably and remain safe. There is a roomy storage bag on the back which can transport snacks, or light shopping. The Sun canopy provides UV protection. The parent handle is adjustable in height, it even went low enough for big sister to take her turn to push. The foot rest (used in stages 1 & 2) completely folds out of the way and can be restored by simply pulling a small lever underneath.

The most amazing feature this trike has is the touch steering. There is no twisting your wrist to move the direction of the wheel, you can literally steer this trike in any direction with just one hand. I loved it, and so did my children.

In their opinion; the most amazing feature... The cell phone!

Let`s hope he avoids any tickets for distracted driving ;)

Final word.

I give this trike 5 bright stars, I highly recommend this trike if you're preparing to make a purchase like this for your child. Again I am very thankful for the opportunity to review such an amazing product.
