Life on the Edge by Jennifer Comeaux Book Tour

Nineteen-year-old Emily is new to pairs skating, but she and her partner Chris have a big dream–to be the first American team to win Olympic gold. Their young coach Sergei, who left Russia after a mysterious end to his skating career, believes they can break through and make history.

Emily and Chris are on track to be top contenders at the 2002 Winter Games. But when forbidden feelings spark between Emily and Sergei, broken trust and an unexpected enemy threaten to derail Emily’s dreams of gold.

My Thoughts: This has to be one of my favorite books this year. The rink was my second home when I was growing up, my brother and I were both figure skaters. My brother was a competitive pairs skater, so I can relate to the skating in the book. Life on the Edge brought back tons of skating memories.

Right from the beginning of the book I was hooked on the characters and the life of a figure skater. This book is really for fans of figure skating with just a bit of romance. It is a clean read for young adults that don't want hot and heavy romance scenes. The book takes place around 2000 and follows a pair couple, Emily and Chris who have a dream of winning the Olympics. They have a Russian coach named Sergei who starts hanging out with Emily outside of the rink. They develop a great friendship and discover they have more than friends feelings for each other. They have a problem with coming out with their relationship because of the skating federation wouldn't approve coach/student relations. I will not give away the ending but will say that I look forward to reading the next book called Edge of the Past. This book was really well written and flows really nicely even through it spans over a year of their life in just over 300 pages. A must read for the romantic figure skating fans!

Arlo Needs Glasses - Book Review

Every child who wears glasses will know just how Arlo feels, and will feel better because of it. And every parent will want that child to know that glasses are cool and fun and enable us to do the things we want to do. Take Arlo: He’s a shaggy, free-spirited dog who loves to play catch, until one day he can’t. He can’t see the ball anymore. He needs glasses!

ISBN-10:0761168796, 9780761168799, 24 pages, Workman Publishing Co. Purchase Arlo Needs Glasses.

My thoughts: First thing my kids noticed when we pulled out this book were all the interactive things they could do while we read the book. Arlo heads to the optometrist to get his eyes checked. While there the kids get to look through a fold-out phoropter, they get to try glasses on Arlo and themselves as Arlo chooses the pair that fits him best. After Arlo gets his new glasses he can see the ball again and the kids can play fetch with him. My kids loved all the items they could move and play with even at the age of 5 & 6. We have read Arlo Needs Glasses a number of times since getting it. I liked that it is a great beginner reader book and also the pictures are very vibrant and happy. A great children's book.

Three Lost Kids and The Christmas Curse Book Tour

In the early fall I introduced you to a children's series called The Three Lost Kids by Kimberly Kinrade. The first book I read was actually the forth book in the series and was just in time for Halloween, The Three Lost Kids and Death of the Sugar Fairy.

The newest book is out in the series and is a Christmas book called The Three Lost Kids and the Christmas Curse. Here is the blurb of the book:

Christmas everyday sounds like the best thing ever to Bella and her sisters. But when a special Wishing Stone grants
her heart's desire, The Three Lost Kids discover the curse hidden in the wish.

Now they have to stop Christmas no matter what--even if that means ending up on Santa's Naughty List.

Will the girls learn the true meaning of Christmas and find a way to break the curse? Or will they be stuck in their self-created Jingle Bells Nightmare forever?

Purchase The Three Lost Kids series on Amazon.com. Also don't forget to check out the website of Kimberly Kinrade

For kids and parents of young kids, join the Bella, Lexie and Maddie at Three Lost Kids & Good Reads

My thoughts: This is the 3 book I have read from The Three Lost Kids series (5th in the series). This is a great Christmas book to have your young kids read or to read with your 5-6+ year olds. This book follows the girls - Bella, Lexie and Maddie as Bella gets a magic wishing stone for Christmas. Bella and her sisters make wishes that come true on the wishing stone only to find out they and the rest of their neighbours are not as happy as they thought they would be. To fix the Christmas curse they are asked to find the true Christmas meaning. They girls set out to fix the Christmas curse and stop Christmas from happening day after day. This is another great book in the Three Lost Kids series that your children will be sure to love.

Jewlr.com offers personalized, high quality rings and pendents at affordable prizes. Choose from having them engraved with words/names or dates. Customize your stones colors, types and material used also.

Just before Mother's Day I shared a great gift idea for Mom, a family ring. Today I want to share another great ring from Jewlr.com, the infinity ring. The infinity ring resembles a curve going round and round, it is an endless loop. This ring has also been know as an eternity ring, symbolizing a love without end

Ordering on Jewlr is very quick and simple with free shipping! It takes about 3-4 business days to have the ring customized before it is shipped out. My ring was ready in 3 days and took only a few days to arrive. Shipping times will vary depending on where you live. I was very impressed on the box my ring arrived in. It can in a nice black box with Jewlr.com on it.
After opening the box I was met with the nice Jewlr logo and a Jewlr black envelope, which contains a authenticity card for my personalized ring and also care instructions. Underneath the logo was my ring in a nice jewelry box and a note for a special gift.
The packaging is really nice and makes it easy to wrap and give to your special someone. It is also nice that all orders come with a free gift. I received a very pretty heart pendant. No worries about ring size as getting the ring resized is free.
I have had many comments on my new infinity ring from friends, co-workers and family. I love how it fit my finger just right, the design isn't too big for my small fingers. The stones glimmer nicely and I love how I was able to customize the accent stones for my husband and my birth stones.

Iams Home 4 the Holidays

As we get into the Christmas spirit and start thinking about the perfect gifts for our family and friends, Iams is heading into it's 14th year of the Iams Home 4 the Holidays program. This is a very special program, a pet adoption drive that is focused on raising awareness of pet adoptions while also ensuring proper nutrition for more homeless pets.
The Iams Home 4 the Holidays program runs from October 1,2012 to Jan 2, 2013. It celebrates over 7 million pets that have been adopted out since the beginning of the program. This program educates potential pet owners about the animals available at local shelters and rescue organizations.

Iams is working in conjunction with founding partner Helen Woodward Animal Center, the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies and more than 4,000 animal organizations worldwide to encourage pet adoption.

"Last year a tiny, starved dachshund was brought into a shelter, weighing maybe one pound soaking wet, and very cold and miserable. The shelter helped nurse her back to health and she was adopted by a wonderful couple that fell in love with her and named her Baby. Stories like these show us the importance of promoting pet adoption and how a program like Iams Home 4 the Holidays can make a huge difference in the life of a pet.”  said Mike Arms, founder of the adoption drive and president of Helen Woodward Animal Center.

I know just from our local shelter that they are overflowing with wonderful adoptable animals that are looking for that forever home. These beautiful pets need your help all year round. I have had many adoptive cats through the last 10 years and wish we had more room for a few more. Right now we have 2 rescue cats, one kitten was just going to be abandon if she didn't come home with me one night.

There are many ways to help out with this program. You can help by:
  • Donating through Bags 4 Bowls – For those who are already pet parents, Iams will donate one bowl of food to a participating Iams Home 4 the Holidays animal organization for every specially marked package of Iams pet food purchased during the campaign
  • Adopting from a local shelter – Every day more and more animals end up in shelters or in rescue care, and more than 25 per cent are pure breeds*. This is important to keep in mind when deciding to bring a pet into your life, the animal you’re looking for is probably in your neighbourhood shelter. To find a participating animal shelter or rescue organization near you, visit iams.ca or facebook.com/iams
  • VolunteeringShelters need volunteers to do everything from feeding, caring for and keeping rescue animals company, to assisting at events and fundraisers. If you can’t adopt but would still love to help do so as a volunteer
  • Visiting Iams on Facebook Visit the Iams Facebook page and click to “Like” the page or various messages, photos, videos, etc. For each “Like” comment Iams will donate meals to participating animal shelters
Last year alone, 1.2 million pets were adopted during the holiday campaign and an estimated 5 million meals were donated to pets in need. In Canada alone, over 75,000 animals found forever homes during the campaign.

"With as many as 36 per cent* of animals euthanized every year in Canadian shelters, this campaign is a wonderful platform to raise awareness about pet adoption and homelessness,” said Barbara Cartwright, CEO, Canadian Federation of Humane Societies. "This year we hope to debunk the myths that surround shelter animals and place deserving pets into the homes of loving families."

Santa Paws 2: The Santa Pups Review & Giveaway

I am very excited about Disney's new release today, Santa Paws 2: The Santa Pups! We absolutely loved the first Santa Paws and have watched in NUMEROUS times. The whole family including Nanny has watched it more than once, so when I was asked if we would like to check out Santa Paws 2 I didn't even have to think twice! I know my kids will love it as they have loved all of the Disney puppy movies including all the Buddies.

Here is a bit about the film before I tell you our thoughts.

The North Pole has a new litter of playful pups! However, when the frisky foursome—Hope, Jingle, Charity and Noble—practically destroy Santa’s Workshop with their mischievous gamboling, they realize the best way to prove that they’re responsible enough to become Santa’s Helpers is to show how well they can spread the Christmas spirit all by themselves.  With help from a magic crystal, they start granting everyone’s wishes. But their good intentions backfire when one unhappy boy asks that Christmas go away forever! With his wish impetuously fulfilled, and the joyous spirit quickly disappearing from the planet, Mrs. Claus and the pups have to find a way to reverse the spell—or risk losing Christmas forever

Our thoughts: We were really excited to be introduced to the four new Santa pups - Hope, Jingle, Charity and Noble. My son loved Noble because he had the crystal to help make wishes for all the kids in Pineville. My daughter loves all the pups but I think her favorite character in the movie is Eddie (dog) Santa's little helper. The Santa pups are on a mission to help Pineville keep the Christmas spirit alive. They borrow Eddie's magic crystal and set out to prove they can have their own crystals by spread the Christmas spirit. The mission backfires when they grant a wish to make all the Christmas stuff go away. The people in Pineville catch the Christmas cold and it spreads almost like a flu. In this movie we get to know Mrs Claus and see her use her magic to help save Christmas with two little children who have recently lost their mother in the fall. This really is a special magical movie just in time for Christmas. I love Jingle who thinks her voice is very soothing but really she needs to practice more. I suggest for anyone that gets teary eyed easily to grab some tissue before sitting down to watch it as there are a few sad parts. A great family movie!

Disney Movie Rewards are included in the combo pack and if you go to the site you can order your very own Eddie the Elf Plush toy. It is free but you need to pay for shipping which is $2.95. The offer is available until December 31,2012.
Enter to win one of four Santa Paws 2: The Santa Pups DVD combo packs. This giveaway is open to Canadian's and will end on November 30 at 12:01 am EST. Thanks and Good Luck!

You Can Buy Happiness (and It's Cheap) by Tammy Strobel

You Can Buy Happiness (And It's Cheap) How One Woman Radically Simplified Her Life And How You Can Too

Once, Tammy Strobel and her husband were living a normal middle-class lifestyle: driving two cars, commuting long distances, and living well beyond their means. Now they are living the voluntary downsizing — or smart-sizing — dream. In this book Strobel combines research on well-being with numerous real-world examples to offer practical inspiration. Her fresh take on our things, our work, and our relationships spells out micro-actions that anyone can take to step into a life that’s more conscious and connected, sustainable and sustaining, heartfelt and happy.

Author: Tammy Strobel
Product Code: 80832
ISBN: 978-1-60868-083-2
Pages: 224

This book was very interesting and I want to show you how small or how big (depending on how you want to look at it) this house is before I go into my thoughts on Tammy's book. Watch the video below.

My thoughts: When I was asked if I would be interested in reviewing this book I thought "why not it sounds very interesting, how does a person simplify to become happier?" When I first started the book I will admit I wasn't sure I was going to be able to finish because of all the quotes and statistics. I am horrible with remembering stats and I enjoy more of a book that talks about stories of the writers life and how to accomplish what they did, not stats of the US. After I got past the 28th page I was hooked and finished the book in a couple days. Tammy is a blogger who decided with her husband, Logan to downsize their things and apartment to reduce their debt, find more time and become happier. By reducing space and debt one can usually work less and find more free time to spend building relationships.

Over the last couple years I have been trying to find a balance for everything in my life. I feel people and kids are really over scheduled and we don't have enough family time. We also don't have enough time to sit and just read or even getaway for the weekend in the wilderness. Tammy was in the same boat. She talks about the world being very materialistic and how we are owned by our stuff. This is very true, if you are using credit cards to buy things and only paying the minimum payment they we don't really own those items. We then have to work longer and harder to pay for the finer things in life. Does this really make us happier in life?  It does make us happier for a while but it is more of a quick fix.

Tammy talks about volunteering and becoming more involved in community relationships. By simplifying their life, getting rid of debt, working less, and living with less (which means easier to clean up and stay clean) you will have more time to do things that really make you happy.

I'll admit I have too much stuff and I was very materialistic when I was younger but over the last couple years I have not shopped like we used to and usually only buy when we need it. Now my goal is to simplify my belongings and reduce clutter in our home by using some of the Mirco-actions along with building better relationships. I highly recommend checking out Tammy's book if you are interested in a simple life or even if you are just interested in seeing how Tammy and others live in tiny houses, she has done her research on the topic and has included some great interviews of others living similar lives.

Wordless Wednesday - Big Girl Baking

My daughter wants to bake ALL by herself as she tells me all the time. I thought about it and she does help a lot in the kitchen and does more than maybe the average five year old would do. This isn't good enough for her though and she wants to do it all alone.

Here is how I fixed this one so that A could bake alone but I could help with the oven. Phillsbury Chocolatey Chunk cookie dough!

Stripped Down Running by Andrea Nair

Outwardly, Hannah Friesen appears to have a wonderful life. She is intelligent, funny, adventurous, attractive, has money and a great husband. She has everything, so why is she throwing it all away? Growing up, Hannah yearns to break free of her painful childhood and her controlling mother, and to live life on her own terms. Finally escaping to the city for a fresh start, Hannah revels in her freedom and frantically takes all she can. Life seems great until she begins to do things she, and those who love her, can't quite understand. Hannah ends up on a self-destructive path that begins to rip her life apart. When the chaos becomes too great, she is forced to address the inner darkness that is blindly propelling her, or face losing everything. She must decide if her choice is life.

Purchase on Chapters or Amazon. Follow Andrea Nair on Twitter @AndreaNair or "Like" on Facebook

My thoughts: This is a psychological novel highlighting the impact of how ones childhood into their adulthood. Hannah is the main character in this novel and we follow her through unfortunate events in her adult life. If something could go wrong or happen it happened to Hannah. Hannah also didn't make it better with her behaviour especially the lying. Throughout the book we read sections of her childhood - trying to understand her mother and her father being kicked out of the family home, we also are shown how she met her husband and learned about a childhood best friend, Juliette.

Finally Hannah agrees to get some counselling at a in-house program to find out what is the underlying cause of all these behaviours. This is also to hopefully help save her marriage and help her live a better life. I don't want to give out any spoilers but this book was a real page turner having me hooked that I finished it in a couple days. This book is a great book that people can relate to and learn maybe more about themselves in the process.

Lunch Time Help from Schneiders Lunchmate

When my kids first started school a few years ago making lunches for my son didn't really feel like a chore. He only went twice one week and three times the next week. Now that both kids are in school and my son is in grade one I find it more of a challenge to make a fun variety of lunches for them.

Not too many kids want the same old things everyday. My daughter is the prime example of a......picky child.....hmm... no that isn't the word as she loves most foods. She just doesn't like sandwiches. This makes me have to really think about her lunches more.

To get fun and creative with her lunch box we try crackers, cheese, veggies, fruit, yogurt and all those fun foods. For a special treat we have sent each kid to school with a Schneiders Lunchmate + Fruit. As a kid I remember opening my lunch to find a lunchable and was super excited. I wasn't a sandwich kid either... maybe this is where she has gotten her lunch habits from.

Recently we check out the new Lunchmate + fruit and each of the kids where excited to choose a lunch. They both actually went with the turkey lunch that includes meat, crackers, tiny cubes of cheese and a fruit cup.
I love that they are compact, quick, everything I would give my kids on a normal lunch day. They are mostly easy for young kids to open on their own. My kids had a bit of trouble with the fruit cup. They are also recyclable and that is great as I like to send litter free lunches or recycle stuff to school.

A nice surprise for the kids were the Lunchmate bucks that you redeem at the Lunchmate Club site for fun products like movie passes, gift cards to Subway or Tim Hortons and even toys are available! There are also contests that can be entered at the website, along with a parent's corner and the product information.

Don't forget to "Like" Lunchmate on Facebook for product information, coupons ($1 off coupon right now) and more.
