What do you get if you win? Your love story will be turned into "Love Tails" - short memorable videos that will run on the Iams social channels and you will win one years supply of Iams food! The grand prize winner and their furry four-legged friend will star in the next national Iams advertising campaign! Would that be awesome?!?

Here is how can you enter:

Share your “Love Tail”:  Visit Iams Facebook page and submit a picture of your cat or dog and along with your IAMS “love tail” story (500 characters or less) starting now through March 3. To be considered, you must have used IAMS in the last month and show this in your picture!

What happens after you submit your “Love Tail”
Once the submission phase is over, Iams will select 50 stories (25 dog and 25 cat) as semi-finalists. Inspiration for your submission:
Iams wants to know what true love means between you and your pet!  Your 500 word “love tail” and photo should tell your love story between you and your pet in a way that would inspire a compelling 1-2 minute video. What makes your love so unique?  Was it love at first sight? What defines your love between you and your pet? Here are some additional thought starters to help you find inspiration when creating your very own “love tail”

A Talk with Marc Lesser, Author of Know Yourself, Forget Yourself

Today I have a guest interview from Marc Lesser, author of :
Know Yourself, Forget Yourself:
Five Truths to Transform Your Work, Relationships and Everyday Life

Purchase New World Library - $14.95   288 pages    ISBN: 978-1-57731-081-8

What was your motivation for writing about practical ways to work with paradox?

Nearly everything about being a human involves paradox.  One of my favorite quotes is, “If it’s not paradoxical, it’s not true!”  I just did a Google search to see who said this, and what came up was…..Marc Lesser.  How paradoxical!  A paradox is something that appears impossible, but may, in fact be true.  Isn’t everything in our lives like this?  Especially things that really matter – like time, consciousness, birth and death, war and peace, how we came to be doing whatever we do, our most important relationships – anything we can say about these topics appears impossible.

I began to notice that a few core paradoxes were also core practices in my work and in my life outside of work.  I noticed that more and more these paradoxes were becoming fundamental and important truths.  I began writing initially to better understand how to work with these paradoxes – in the work that I do with my clients, who are leaders in business and non-profits companies, as well as in my own life.

The expression “know yourself, forget yourself” sounds familiar.  Where does it come from?

Yes, thank you Dogen, the 13th century founder of Zen Buddhism in Japan, who famously said – To study the Way is to study the self; to study the self is to forget the self; to forget the self is to awaken with everything and everyone.  I first encountered this statement when I was in my 20’s and have been working with it ever since.

Is there a way to practice – self-knowing and self-forgetting?

Yes, self-awareness practice and mindfulness practice are practices for both self-knowing and self-forgetting.  Think of an athlete – a superior tennis play works diligently on all aspects of self-knowing – details of hitting a ball under multiple conditions, state of mind, strategy.  Then when playing a match, these awareness practices have all been embodied and the focus is completely on being present, aware, with little or no focus on self.  Self-awareness practices and mindfulness practice are ways to train ourselves to be more present, alive, skillful in our work lives and in all our relationships.

How can I fight for change and accept what is at the same time?

This is a core truth, a core paradox of being human – accepting ourselves completely and making an effort to become more aware and to help others.  If we just accept what is, we can be lulled into indifference.  If we are always fighting for change, without accepting ourselves and our situation, we can become both nearsighted and stressed.  We can make an effort to practice and build our ability in both acceptance and in making changes, skillfully.

Help! My life is stressful. Too much to do and not enough time. What guidance can you offer to get off of this treadmill?

Many people are stressed and in search of an elusive sense of balance. Know Yourself, Forget Yourself presents another approach that addresses underlying issues and is more effective than conventional approaches.  Instead of looking outside yourself for balance, find ways to take care of yourself, to take care of your mind.  I notice that people looking for balance often try to add more things to an already overflowing life.  Our cups are already too full.  We don’t need to add more; instead we can change the way we see, broaden our perspective and not get caught by mistaken ideas about balance.  And not be narrowed, and stressed, by mistaken beliefs about ourselves.

How can I be confident and question everything at the same time?

Confidence comes from knowing yourself – from accurate emotional awareness, deep listening to yourself and to others.  The more confident you become the more you can engage with important questions.  The practice of “not knowing” can be a powerful way to develop more confidence.

Quick Afternoon Weekday Snack - Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter Cookies #LMDConnector

For a quick afternoon snack I love warm right out of the oven cookies. I mean really who doesn't love cookies? In my house we love peanut butter (okay I am a peanut butter addict) and also chocolate!

My daughter and I love to bake on the days she is off school and he brother is at school. I know next year A and I will both be missing our mommy/daughter day. She looks forward to it all the time. We usually craft, bake, thrift shop and play. A's favourite past times are baking and designing (drawing pictures of outfits - she is only 5 but 19 going on 20)

This week we decided to bake up some quick and easy cookies - Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter Cookies. We love the cake mix cookies and you can find some great ideas on the Life Made Delicious website from General Mills.
 And now for the recipe:

Ingredients:
  • 1 pkg Betty Crocker* SuperMoist* Golden Cake Mix
  • 1 1/4 cups (300 mL) crunchy peanut butter
  • 1/4 cup (50 mL) packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup (50 mL) butter or margarine, softened
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups (500 mL) milk chocolate chips
Directions:
  • Heat oven to 350ºF (or 325ºF for dark or nonstick baking sheets). In large bowl, beat cake mix, peanut butter, brown sugar, butter and eggs with electric mixer on medium speed until well blended. Stir in chocolate chips.
  • On ungreased baking sheets, drop dough by rounded tablespoonfuls 2 inches apart.
  • Bake 9 to 11 minutes or until edges are set (centres will be soft). Cool 1 minute; remove from baking sheets to cooling racks.
These cookies are so quick and easy to whip up for an afternoon snack or for after dinner. I bake mine big and only bake for 10 minutes. This left them soft and gooey just how I like them! You can find this recipe and so many more at Life Made Delicious.
As a Life Made Delicious blogger I want to let you in on a few great things that General Mills is offering at the moment. Check out specially marked GM products for Buy one Get one Movie tickets and snacks. Great for a family night to the movies or how about a date night with your spouse?

Keep an eye out for new limited time Cheerios! Peanut Butter flavored, I can't wait to try these out and mix them with the Chocolate Cheerios.

A Sneak Peak..........

I finished another washcloth, this time for my son. The color in the photo isn't the greatest. It is actually a really nice Sage green.

Here is also a sneak peak of my next project or attempt at... a cowl for my son. I am moving on to the Purl knit.

Nobody Has to Know by Frank Nappi Book Review

Nobody Has To KnowNobody Has To Know

Nobody Has To Know, Frank Nappi's dark and daring new thriller, tells the story of Cameron Baldridge, a popular high school teacher whose relationship with one of his students leads him down an unfortunate and self-destructive path. Stalked through text-messages, Baldridge fights for his life against a terrifying extortion plot and the forces that threaten to expose him. NHTK is a sobering look into a world of secrets, lies, and shocking revelations, and will leave the reader wondering many things, including whether or not you can ever really know the person you love.

Purchase Nobody Has To Know on Amazon.

My thoughts: WOW! Okay now that I got that out of the way I will give you some thoughts on this novel. I was excited to read this book as the synopsis sounded very interesting but after reading it, well I am blown away with tons of thoughts about this novel. Frank Nappi is a brilliant writer, this storyline was solid, keeping readers on their toes wondering how far Cameron would really go. I can't really say that I liked any of the main characters but that didn't stop me from loving this book. Nappi I don't think wants the characters to be liked in such a way that we can relate or feel bad for Cameron. He brought on the whole thing himself.

This was a suspense psychological thriller type novel. I would say aimed at 18 yrs + as the topics discussed are adult natured and there is swearing in it.

When you think Cameron may just make the right decision you are totally wrong and he follows down a dark path only to have this haunt him when he thinks it is all over. I don't want to give away any of the story so I am trying to keep my review very vague. The is a great plot, with turns I didn't even expect until it was right upon us. Cameron has loved and lost at the very young age of fourteen and really never got over it. I think this is where Cam has a really hard time walking away from one of his students. Being an adult you think Cam would turn this wrong into a right but he doesn't and the plot just thickens.

5 out of 5 stars! I look forward to reading more of Frank Nappi's work.

"I am seriously impressed with how the author took the simplistic Amish life and combined it with a futuristic, almost dystopian story line as seamlessly as she did. I highly recommend it."
Crafty Cauldron

"I am also a sucker for Amish stories, and love the idea of the new paranormal/supernatural/dystopian twists using them. This book is electric. You are pulled into Lydia's story and keep on reading, trying to find out what happens next.I tried to figure out what I would do if I were in her situation. I am impressed by the strength she is able to find within herself." Andi's Young Adult blog

"I never know what to think when I start reading a book by a new author. But this one was electrifying!!! his book had me on the edge of my seat all the way to the last page. "  Taking Time for Mommy

"It begins with the perfect bang, and lights up your mind in ways you may not have thought. As much as it is dystopian it is speculative, and I am all for challenging the minds of the human race." Literary Sweet

"The characters were so well written that I felt like I knew them. Lydia stayed true to who she was and her personality even when she had to make decisions that were not at all what an Amish would have ever imagine anyone would have to make." Delphina Reads too Much

Learning to Knit: Part #1 - The Washcloth

I have always wanted to learn how to knit. Growing up I was a crafter, I admit I tried my hand at a lot of different crafting projects. Some projects I finished and did well with, others well lets not really talk about them today.

Over the last few months I have been watching all the neat things my friend JoAnne has been coming up with - socks, mitts, hats, shawls, scarves. I have been wanting to learn for so long how to knit but really didn't have anyone to help me. I tried a few times and each time I got frustrated with how long it took and how hard it was. Guess what? Basic knitting isn't hard I was just doing it wrong.

Now that I have been shown how to do a basic knit I have finished my very first knitting project! It feels wonderful and I am very excited to learn more stitches to make other things.

I want to share this with my you as I know a few of you are knitters - if you are leave a comment below and let me know if you are on Ravelry.com or have a knitting blog.
JoAnne had said the best thing for me to start with was a dishcloth and the very basic Grandma style cloths we all grew up around. Here is the pattern I used and my progress. I finished this in two days. I would say it likely 4+ hours maybe a little more. I didn't check the times. I am sure I will get faster as I make more.

Yarn: 100% cotton

Needles: 8 or .5mm

Instructions:

Cast on 4

Row 1: Knit 4

Row 2: Knit 2, yarn over, knit rest of row.

Repeat Row 2 until you have 45 or 50 stitches on the needle (depends on how big you want the wash/dishcloth, I did 45).

Now you are going to start the decreasing rows as follows:
Knit 1 Knit 2 together Yarn over Knit 2 together again and then knit to end of the row.

Repeat until you have 4 stitches left.

Knit 2 together

Knit last 2 together

Tie a knot you are finished!
A BIG Thank You to JoAnne for getting me going on this project and pointing me in the right direction. I look forward to making tons of great crafty knits!

My next project? Another washcloth as I have 2 kids and my son wants one too! I am sure I will likely make a bunch as I love them for dishes. I also want to make a cute handband - just a basic thin one. I hope you will follow my adventures in learning to knit.

The Voice by Jennifer Anne Davis Book Review

Add to Goodreads
During her abduction and assault, Audrey begins to hear a voice. She hopes she's not going crazy, because after what she's experienced, that's the most logical explanation. However, as she begins to listen to the voice, Audrey realizes that someone may be telepathically trying to help her.

Unfortunately, rescue isn't all she needs. In order to leave behind the constant reminders, she flees to her Aunt Kate's house in San Diego, and assumes a new identity. It works until the eighteen-year-old twin boys who live next door threaten to break through the protective walls she's worked so hard to build.

Between Caleb going out of his way to befriend her and Justin avoiding her at all costs, Audrey doesn't know if normalcy will ever find her again. But one thing is certain: When a familiar danger resurfaces, it's the same voice that she turns to -- a voice that is not only real, but a lot closer than she realizes.

Purchase a copy today on Amazon Kindle or Paperback

My thoughts: This is the first novel for Jennifer Anne Davis but it doesn't feel like that to me as I read this book in a couple sittings. Jennifer's writing style flows really well together and touches some deep dark topics such as sexual abuse. This book is about courage, strength along with powers of the supernatural.

The book starts off near the end of Audrey's abduction, where she is found by some hunters in the area because of a voice in her head telling her to scream. This voice found her while she was held captive in a cottage in the forest and helped her through the darkest times until she was found.

This was a great YA book keeping the reader wondering what to expect next. The reader follows Audrey through her healing after being sexually assault by a close family member who kept her tied up the whole time. We also see Audrey fall in love and finally put a face to the voice that was in her head through it all. I fell in love with the main characters minus Audrey's unlce of course. The twin brothers are both very different but both likeable characters there to help Audrey heal and stay safe. Audrey's aunt is also going through some hard times of her own and having Audrey there has helped both the girls over come their troubles.

I found this novel very captivating and easy to read. I give it 5 out of 5 stars and will be reading it again in the future. I look forward to more work of Jennifer Anne Davis.

Bronwyn Fitzgibbons was young and reckless. It was easy for Ronan to steal her human life and make her a vampire. She ran, but she never forgot him--or how he made her feel. Rider saved Bronwyn from the new life she loathed and the new self she detested. His love restored her sanity. Now Ronan is back to claim her. She struggles like hell against him, but she cannot deny the overwhelming power of her maker. Will Bronwyn surrender to the one who could possess her utterly? Or can she find the strength to choose the one who loves her as she is?

Read an excerpt from the book:

“Please, tell me you aren’t going to go looking for him,” Rider said quietly.“I don’t think I’ll have to, he knows where I am now.” Rider looked at her for a moment before storming out of the room. Bronwyn let out a huff of air and sat on her bed.Seraph materialized in front of her. “Fighting again?”“Not exactly fighting. This is exactly the reason I don’t like living with him; he gets all moody and possessive. I’m not his to own, I never was,” Bronwyn said angrily.Seraph studied her face, “Rider isn’t the only one who wants to own you, Wyn. So snap out of your pissy attitude and play nice.” It was rare for Seraph to scold her, so Bronwyn kept her mouth shut. Seraph nodded and stalked out of the room. Finally alone with her thoughts, she went into the bathroom and turned the shower on as hot as it would go. She stepped in as soon as steam came pouring out of the top. Bronwyn stood under the spray, wanting to wash away the last twenty years of her life.

Bananagrams Giveaway!

Today I have a fun little giveaway and I promise it will be easy to enter. Are you looking for a fun game to enjoy your children to learn to spell and expand their vocabulary?

Bananagrams is a fun and zany word game! We checked out Bananagrams back in the summer of 2011 (Bananagrams fun!) and had a lot of fun using the tiles just to play with instead of really playing the game as my kids were a little to young for it. Now that my kids are older and can spell a bit we have been using the titles to practice for spelling tests.  This has helped with making homework a lot more fun. My son will write out his words on paper 4 or 5 times and then we do a quiz with the Bananagram tiles. We have done it with both his English and French words.
We are almost ready to work on learning the real rules of the game, which is all about making a crossword grid while racing your opponent to the finish (whoever runs out of tiles first!). If you are a Words with Friends fan you will want to check out Bananagrams and invite some friends over to have a great game night!

Check out the Bananagrams website for where to buy and more games that are similar. You can also check out Thomas Allen & Son Ltd to pick up a copy.

Now for the Giveaway! Our fabulous friends at Thomas Allen & Son Ltd want to offer three (3) lucky Genuine Jenn readers a Bananagrams set! This giveaway is open to Canadians, just fill out the rafflecopter below!
