About the Author:

I began writing again after 17 years doing the "married thing." I realized two things: it was more than my imagination that was being held back, and I'm enjoying starting to live out some of those dark sexy urges as much as writing about them.

I've always been open to new experiences hearing about others. I like to read fiction that doesn't shy away from the sex people have, because to be honest, people have sex. Sometimes for the wrong reasons, sometimes for the reasons they're not admitting. That's why it's such an important part of writing truthfully about how people interact with people.

My writing teachers told me to tell the truth and to not be scared. So I write about dark desires. Kissing that person (of any sex) you aren't supposed to kiss. And inviting the wrong person to see something they aren't supposed to see.

Not because it's wrong. Because you learn something about yourself when you embrace your inner desires.

I'm new at this, after 100 poems back in high school and I think I have been thinking up alternate histories in my head the entire time.

Review:

This is a great little bundle of erotic short stories. They jump right into the action and can be read in on sitting or over a few. Included is a little for everyone. A couple of the stories were not really my cup of tea, but I do admit they are steamy. I am not into public humiliation or sex in public so those ones were not my favorite. I also found the last one I didn't really get. I did like the rest of the stories, I believe there were 8 in total.

The first half of the book read really well, the characters and stories were fast paced and action packed. I did find the editing didn't hold out all through the book, if you are just looking for a sexy read then that likely wont bother you. I do have a hard time with errors in novels of any kind.

I would be interested in reading more from this author as I do like her writing. I'm giving this book a 3.5 out of 4 stars.

The First for Noelle (A Games of Love Expansion Pack) by Deanna Dee ~ Book Review

Book Description:

In her sixteenth year on Christmas, Noelle wants a true love.

Noelle Peterson is sixteen and never been kissed. She has her eye on Trey Sang, but she can barely talk to him, never mind anything else. With a little help from her best friend and her goofy cousin, can she work up the nerve to approach Trey? Will this Christmas bring the first (kiss for) Noelle?

About the Author:

Deanna Dee is strictly human and does not, to her knowledge, own a hyena. She lives by the sea, which she takes full advantage of in the summer time. Nerd culture and pop culture make up the shameless downtime of her life. The rest of it is writing, and she’s okay with that.

Review:

As far as short stories go this was a great YA short story. Just enough to get the reader hooked on the characters and want to know more. Noelle has her first real crush and can't seem to form a coherent sentence around him, instead she runs and hides from him.  Ah, the joys of being a teen with a crush, I think we all remember those days. The author does a great job of allowing the readers into Noelle's head and her fears over Trey, her crush. A fun holiday read, now I want to read the whole series.

I give this short story a 4 out of 5 stars!

I will be sharing my own Short Stories & Creative Writing in 2016

As you know from visiting Genuine Jenn, I read a lot! I get tons of requests to read so many great books by authors that traditionally publish with big publishing houses and also authors who publish with smaller presses. Yes, I also read self or Indie published books! I have met some amazing people through reviewing books on Genuine Jenn, Goodreads and Amazon.

I have recently decided it was time to try my hand at some writing other than writing reviews on the blog. I have enrolled in an online creative writing course and I have picked up a few books on writing. A few author friends I have met online have also been super supportive, along with family and friends. I would like to post some of my personal work on Genuine Jenn, short stories and writing prompts that I take part in, I hope you will look forward to them and enjoy reading what I write.

Thank you for all the support over the last five + years and hope you will continue to enjoy your visits to Genuine Jenn!

Author Spotlight Saturday ~ Interview with Martin Wilsey

Please welcome Martin Wilsey to Genuine Jenn today! We talk with Martin about his novel The Broken Cage and so much more! Welcome Martin!

Tell us a little bit about yourself and why/what inspired you to write? When did you start writing?

My first novel, Still Falling, was published in March of 2015. My second novel, The Broken Cage, was released in September 2015. I started writing the book as a way to keep from going stir crazy after a bad injury to my spine. TV and Facebook get real old, real fast when you’re trapped in your recliner. I have been a science fiction lover for as long as I could read. I still read a hundred books a year, and they are mostly Scifi and Fantasy.

I am lucky enough to know a few published authors, and they gave me a lot of great advice. Advice about tools to help me write. Advice about how to power through and get the first draft done. All their advice has served me well.

I also have a lot of support from friends and family.

It’s been fun.

What was your inspiration for ‘The Broken Cage'?

The Broken Cage is Book 2 in the Solstice 31 Saga. I have to say that my inspiration was that I wanted to write the kind of story I love to read. One full of mystery, romance, action adventure and bacon.

What three words would you use to best describe The Broken Cage?

Plans go wrong.

Can you tell us if you’re working on anything else at the moment?

My current project is the final book in the Solstice 31 Saga trilogy, Blood of the Scarecrow. I will release one short story a month related to the Saga, 15 in total. I have also outlined my next two novels.

What was your very first book that you wrote?

When I was in high school, I wrote a sci-fi novel called, Intergalactic Doldrums. I still have it in a binder somewhere. I need to drag that out! I made several failed attempts in the decades that followed but always got wrapped around the axle in the middle. I will revisit some of them one day.

My first published novel was Still Falling.

Other than your own, what are your favourite books?

I love the classics: The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, Rendezvous with Rama, Lord of the Rings, Dune, Neuromancer, and too many more to list.

When you are writing to you like to listen to music? What is on your playlist?

The music I listen to while I write varies wildly based on the scene I am writing, mostly classical. It could be O Fortuna, Beethoven’s 5th, Adagio in G Minor by Albinoni many others.

Who is your favorite character in your books?

My favorite character is named Po. The transformation she makes in the saga is a big one.

Do you ever take characteristics or nuances from close friends or family when working on character development and if so has that friend or family member noticed and what was their response to it?

Yes. I base some characters on real people. I even use their real names if they want me to use it. It’s a fun insider thing!

What’s your favourite treat?

Rice Krispy marshmallow treats!! My wife makes my birthday cakes of them!

What’s your Favourite place to read/write?

I have a favorite recliner in my living room. Good light and very comfy. Great place for my coffee.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

I would live in a rustic lodge, in a forest, by a fresh water lake. (As long as the Internet access was good!)

Review:

This novel was fun, and flirty.

I understand this is the third book of the Puffin Island series. I have not read the previous two. I imagine if I would have I would have seen more of the already obvious 'I love to hate you' attitude the characters Alec and Skylar both posses.

This novel was perfectly set during the Christmas season and Sarah writes abouts two characters who seem to have no interest in one another with the exception of mutual respect and friendship.
By the time you're hooked on the plot it's too late and you find yourself entangled in their unknown love for one another, and can only sit patiently cheering the relationship on to develop into something more.

An Escort for Christmas: A Billionaire Novella by A. Zavarelli ~ Book Review

About the Author:

A. Zavarelli is a romance book junkie, cat lover, and traveler when plagued by intense cases of wanderlust. She likes all things chocolate, books that come with warnings, and pretty much any kind of characters that are dark and gritty.

You can find more about her on her website.

Review:

Both Harper and Jameson are both new to this escort biz and are not really sure how it works. Harper needs the money but has removed sex from the table. Jameson needs a "girlfriend" to take home for the holidays to meet his family, no sex rule is applied from his end also. Harper has a hard time playing the little vixen and starts falling for Jameson. Jameson falls for Harper's sweet character and so does the rest of his family. The author does a great job with the complexity of the characters in a novella. I found I was falling for both of them and hoping for the best. I found the pace of this story moved right along and had me hooked from the beginning. Another great read from this author. I read it in one sitting because I really needed to know how this escort job was going to end up with these two main characters.

I give this book a 4 out of 5.

Review:

If you enjoy a cutesy romance, this is the novel for you.
It doesn't start off with the best of mood as unfortunately Izzy is left at the altar minutes before her wedding and Rob the best man is not only apologetic he's sympathetic, and he takes care of the guests for Izzy even if she does punch him.

Izzy resumes to her busy life where she designs wedding dresses.
It's been several months since Rob has seen Izzy, and even if she did punch him the last time he saw her, he still insistent to check in on her at her business.
A snow storm arrives and Izzy can't get home safely, so naturally Rob offers her a place to stay while the storm passes.Stormed in together, with not much to do to pass time, they talk, and while they talk their relationship mends, and who knew how sweet, sincere, and affectionate this man could be. Maybe being left at the altar was meant to be, as it seems true love hadn't really found her yet.

The title is so fitting, as this is definitely a fairytale romance, and I really enjoyed it!

About the Author:

As a child, I was constantly told off for two things: having my nose in a book and living in a dream world.  Things haven't changed much since then, but at least in writing I've found a use for my runaway imagination.

I started writing fiction in 2004 after finding a few scribbled scenes I had written more than a decade ago. I had expected to cringe as I read it, but instead I was pleasantly surprised.  A short while later I had an idea for a story, and since my youngest had just started pre-school and I was desperate to do something creative beyond making happy faces with the kids' dinner ingredients, I decided to unearth a long-buried passion and try to write a novel. I quickly became totally addicted.

I joined the RNA in 2005 and submitted my first polished and completed manuscript to their New Writers' Scheme and nervously awaited the verdict. Much to my delight, they liked it and decided to send it on to Mills & Boon, and by November 2005 I had sold my first book.

Since then, things have been going rather well. In 2006 I received the RNA's Joan Hessayan New Writers' Award for my first book, Blind-Date Marriage, which was also nominated in two categories, Best First Book and Best Traditional Romance for the presitgious RITA award in 2007.  See here for details of further awards.

I've now completed 17 novels for Harlequin/Mills & Boon and my books have been translated into 24 languages and sold in 30 different countries across the world! Ssh... I'm not supposed to tell anyone, but my favourite foreign editions are the Japanese manga books!

I still live in London, but my other favourite places to be are the highlands of Scotland and the English countryside on a summer's afternoon.  I love cooking, good food and anything cinnamon-flavoured.  Of course, I still can't keep away from a good book, or a good movie—especially romances—but only if I'm stocked up with tissues, because I know I'll need them before the end, whether it's happy or sad.

Review:

Fiona has written a flawless read, one I very much enjoyed. Nicole is a romantic, she loves love. So it's fitting that she owns a unique business; she plans wedding proposals, and she's very good at it.
Nicole once met the man named Alex who made her think about her very own happily ever after, but she let him get away. What will happen now that Alex has returned into her life, but for business not pleasure...

All the characters were so well developed, and with just the right amount of ups and downs, and complications this novel was read in no time!

About the Author:

Helen Yeomans tried short stories, scripts and screenplays before settling on the novel as her preferred form. She is currently working on her fifth.

Yeomans has a background in the publishing industry and worked in Toronto (Prentice-Hall) and London (Mitchell-Beazley) before founding her own company in Vancouver, providing editing and writing services to business clients worldwide. Her first book, The Christmas Carol Handbook, was published in 1987 and sold 10,000 copies.

She fell into fiction writing by accident while exploring the film industry as a source of editorial contracts. After writing three feature length film scripts, one of which was optioned, she tried her hand at shorter scripts then other fiction forms, including short stories for children.

Owen’s Day, her first novel, continued the Christmas theme with its story of a man who gives too much. Published in 2011, it was followed a year later by Ang Tak (“Little Tiger”), a story of international intrigue centered on an amateur golfer and his caddy at the Masters. In November 2013 came The Money Tree, about a close-knit family living on the Gulf Islands of British Columbia, and their unusual trees. The story explores the stability of paper money and family. Most recently, Return to Kaitlin is a story of a young man’s odyssey across northern Canada.

Born in England and raised in Canada, Yeomans is a libertarian with a lifelong interest in the relationship between people and their governments. She is an avid golfer who generally succeeds in playing well approximately once a year, loves movies and music and reading. She’s currently at work on her fifth novel.

Welcome back to Cherry Pie Island…the most delicious place to spend Christmas!

Hannah’s holidays are normally spent nibbling chocolate coins with her daughter and praying she’s not too old for a stocking on Christmas morning. But this year, she’s been offered the dressmaker’s job of a lifetime: creating a one-of-a-kind a gown for her friend Annie’s Christmas wedding on the picture-perfect Cherry Pie Island.

Many mince pies and one hot-pink organza dress later, Hannah is set to snuggle back into her old routine…until she discovers that there are three more weddings to come – and not a dress in sight!

Four themes, four brides and four parties spent avoiding chef Harry Fontaine, whose cynicism is as much a wedding day guarantee as confetti and cake. Hannah has her work cut out for her! Yet, with a sprinkling of snowflakes and Christmas magic, it could be that this is the year when miracles really do happen…if Hannah will let them.

Celebrate four very special weddings with Jenny Oliver in the soon-to-be Christmas classic: Four Weddings and a White Christmas. Four very good reasons to get out in the snow and fall in love!

About the Author:

Jenny Oliver wrote her first book on holiday when she was ten years old. Illustrated with cut-out supermodels from her sister’s Vogue, it was an epic, sweeping love story not so loosely based on Dynasty.

Since then Jenny has gone on to get an English degree, a Masters, and a job in publishing that’s taught her what it takes to write a novel (without the help of the supermodels). She wrote The Parisian Christmas Bake Off on the beach in a sea-soaked, sand-covered notebook. This time the inspiration was her addiction to macaroons, the belief she can cook them and an all-consuming love of Christmas. When the decorations go up in October, that’s fine with her!

Book Review:
A great holiday read if you’re looking for a quick, sweet holiday romance! This wonderful short story presents likable characters, vivid imagery and a story with Christmas spirit or two.

This story is void of the predictable elements that plague most modern-day romances, such as arrogant heroes and dimwitted heroines. Instead, Stewart writes a genuine tale of true love and realistic obstacles that serve as life’s hurtles.

The story of Quinn Hollister and Cale McKenzie is one of second chances at love - one that proves nothing will stand in fate’s way. Keeping Christmas by Dan Walsh ~ Book Review

Book Description:

For the first time since their children were born, empty nesters Judith and Stan Winters spent Thanksgiving without the kids, and it's looking like Christmas will be the same. Judith can't bring herself to even start decorating for the holiday; her kids always hung the first ornaments on the tree, ornaments they had made each year since they were toddlers. Sure they were strange-looking--some could be called downright ugly--but they were tradition. A tradition she's heartbroken to miss this year.

With Judith refusing to decorate the bare spruce tree in their living room, Stan knows something must be done. And his only hope for saving the holiday is found in a box of handmade ornaments.

Fan-favorite Dan Walsh invites readers to enjoy this nostalgic Christmas story that celebrates all of our most cherished seasonal traditions, especially the importance of family. Readers will join in remembering the things that make their own Christmas season so special.

Review:

This is the first book I have read by Dan Walsh. I enjoyed the concept of the story but I found it was drawn out and sometimes slow paced. The characters I enjoyed and I would have loved to have seen a bit more character development on the memories on the children. This is a great story for adults who are empty-nesters, I know I will be sad the first holiday without my children when they grow up and have their own family.  The author writes with short direct sentences. I found sometimes repeating. I did like how this story told both Judith's and Stan's side of the story, in the end Stan really stepped up and made a family memory no one will forget.

I give this a 3 out of 5 stars. It is a depressing story with a ray of light in the end.

About the Author:

I'm a writer of romantic comedies who lives in Manchester with my husband and our two daughters. I've been scribbling down bits of stories for as long as I can remember, graduating from a pen to a typewriter and then an electronic typewriter. And I felt like the bee's knees typing on THAT.
