Softlips Organic Review

I don't know about you but I am a HUGE lip balm, lip gloss gal! It was soo bad of an addiction that you turned in my bedroom as a teenager you could put your hand on a lip gloss or balm! I am still pretty addicted to lip balm but not as bad. I have a few in arms reach of the computer, my bed, and a few in my purse.

I had the opportunity to try all 5 of the Softlips Organic lip balm. They come in 5 flavors- Peppermint, Papaya, Pomegranate, Acai Berry and Chai Latte.

Book Review: If I Could Keep You Little

I had an opportunity to review a book written and illustrated by Marieanne Richmond called If I Could Keep You Little. This book is a great book about the milestones children reach as they grow up and what most of us mommies what them to stay little. The illustrations are beautiful.

From the Publisher, About the Author: Marieanne Richmond started as her own greeting card company (Marieanne Richmond Studios, Inc.) and has become a recognized creator of numerous books that celebrate milestones in life, memorable journeys, and relationships. Since her first book in 1997, Gift of An Angel, writer and artist Marieanne Richmond has touched the lives of millions over the past decade through her line of greeting cards and gift books.

Review: I came home to a sick little girl one night after this book arrived in the mail. She had a pretty bad cough and was up at 11pm when I got in. We decided to cuddle on the couch for abit before heading back to bed. I pulled out this book and began to read it to my little girl. Abby sat so still and was right into this book. The following day she asked me to read it to her again. This is such a great book. All the pages are so true, "If I could keep you little, I'd keep you close to me.  But then I'd miss you growing, into who you're meant to be!" This book is all about keeping your child little but then realizing you would miss out on all the wonderful milestones on the way of them growing up and becoming an adult. The illustrations are cute and fun and the words are simple and easy to read. This is a great book for young readers to start with. All around I really do recommend this book, for young and old. You will absolutely love reading this book to your children.

Where to Buy: You can purchase If I Could Keep You Little at Chapters for $14.43 or at Amazon for $18.99

Meow-Worthy Meals

The Daily Cat: Whole Health

Good nutrition is as important to your cat as it is to you, but your cat's nutritional needs are quite different! Unlike humans, a cat needs a high-fat diet with less fiber. Even if you prefer a vegetarian diet, cats are carnivores. They need animal protein and fat for optimal health. Your cat also benefits from fiber for a healthy digestive tract and carbohydrates for energy.

But with thousands of pet foods available, how do you pick the one that's right for your cat?

Life Stage and Lifestyle

Start by identifying the cat's life stage and lifestyle. Kittens, nursing mothers and mature pets are examples of life stages and each has different nutritional requirements. All cat foods should state which life stage they are recommended for.
Nutritional needs also vary depending on lifestyle. A cat that's primary activity is guarding the couch doesn't need as much energy as one that likes to spend time roaming outside.
Finally, it is important to take into account any special medical conditions that your cat might have, such as food allergies, which may require a special diet recommended by your veterinarian.

Merry Christmas Eve

This morning I was woken up by a little boy running into mommy and daddy's room saying it's Christmas EVE, tomorrow is CHRISTMAS! He jumped into bed to have a "talk" with me, all about his day yesterday since I don't get to hear about school and the afternoon when I am at work. There was a HUGE reminder that there is only one more sleep until Santa comes to our house! Then P turned to me and said "I love you very much" awwwww those are the moments I love!

Hope everyone has a Very Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year! Here's to 2011!!

Kraft Recipe for Joy

Tis the season for giving. In a post back on December 9th, 2010 called Christmas Card Day I was talking about making, buying and sending Christmas cards to friends and family. I am very behind this year and didn't get a chance to make or mail out cards. Christine a PR working with Kraft Canada emailed me about a new program that Kraft Canada has whipped up this season called Kraft Recipe for Joy.

The Kraft Recipe for Joy program features an e-card and virtual recipe box containing more than 20 recipes you can add to your personal recipe collection. For each Recipe for Joy e-card sent, Kraft will donate $2 to Food Banks Canada, up to a maximum of $50,000 total. Help Kraft Canada reach their goal of $50,000 to help alleviate hunger during the holidays by sending family and friends these wonderful e-cards that are quick and easy to send.

Some of the great recipes included are Baked Chessy Brocoli Dip, Ultimate 7-Layer Dip, Mom's Best Bite-sized Meatballs, Chocolate Shortbread Cookies, Sweet Peanut Brittle, Snowball Chocolate Cake and more.

I will be whipping up tons of Kraft recipes from the Kraft Recipe for Joy program Thanks to Kraft Canada who sent out a gift basket and giftcards to me to cook up a storm and review these great recipes! Please keep an eye out for future posts over the holidays and into the New Year.

Bagnetic Review and Giveaway!

I had a wonderful opportunity to review a family pack of bagnetic bags over the last month. I love eco-friendly bags. I have tried so many of the .99 cents ones and the $1.99 ones even, but they don't hold up that well after many uses and washes. I was very excited to try out Bagnetic as they are suppose to hold 30lbs and still hold their shape! So after receiving our bags to try out we went out on a big grocery trip. We packed up all our bags and even saved a few cents for using produce bags on the one trip! When I pulled out the bags we got a few looks, even a "those look like nice bags" comment.

Away we went to packing the groceries. I found them really easy to pack and great to carry especially with the hook. At Food Basics they do not have the hooks to hang bags on as the customer bags from the end of the conveyor belt. They do have a seat to rest the bag on and since it is metal the end the bags hooked on nicely! They stay very neat in the back of our van also. We get all different comments from cashiers and shoppers like "they are magnetic? neat" to "these are really nice where did you get them?" They do hold their shape after using them over and over again. They are also washable and then hang dry!

We did have a small rip happen in one, I'm thinking when the lady jam all our stuff into the one bag a box must have torn the bottom edge but the best part is.. it hasn't torn anymore! it is made of ripstop material and wont continue to rip like other bags do. I found the hook very very handy walking home from our "milk" store to bring the heavy bag of milk. It stops the bags from digging into your hand. Which for me is great as I'm trying to talk a 3 year old into walking the rest of the way home (its 2 blocks away from our house) since she didn't want to take the stroller.

Bagnetic bags do hold 30lbs, as we even tried my son in a bag haha he is 40lbs and it held up well (of course this was done over the bed just in case!). The magnetics on the bags make them easy to stick to the fridge or stick them together and go. They hold a lot and are easy to carry. The produce bags are fun and let your food breath unlike the plastic bags which really only serve a purpose for 20 minutes and then go to the landfill.

I recommend these bags all the time to family and friends and will be purchasing more in the new year! The produce bag will be great for my son at school as a snack bag. Right now they use a zip lock bag to carry their snacks in everyday and its starting to wear already.

Where to Buy: Visit Bagnetic to purchase Eco-friendly shopping (2 pack for $7.99, family pack for $24.99), produce bags (4 pack for $7.99) and big hook ($4.99)

Connect: With Bagnetic on Facebook and on Twitter.

Win! Here comes the fun part. Bagnetic is offering One lucky Canadian Coupon Mom reader a family pack of Bagnetic Bags! The pack includes 4 shopping bags, 4 produce bags and a huge hook!

Interview with Bagnetic.com

How many times have you gotten ready and into your car to do groceries only to realize you forgot your bags and have to run back into the house? Or even worse you do all your shopping and your bags are at home or in the car? I've done all the above. I've also went into the store with a huge mess of bags as I knew I needed to buy lots of groceries and didn't want to buy any plastic bags.

I decided to google Eco-friendly shopping bags one day and came across a Great Canadian site called Bagnetic. This company is based in the Toronto area of Ontario (Brampton) and offers Eco-friendly grocery and produce bags to their customers, along with a GIANT hook to keep them all on and hang up or carry your groceries with.

I had the opportunity to interview Steve Loureiro from Bagnetic. Hope you enjoy the interview and please enter the giveaway for a chance to WIN your very own family pack of Bagnetic bags.

Who is Steve Loureiro and Ryan Bautista?

Ryan Bautista and Steve Loureiro are long time Best-Friends and partners in Bagnetic Bags.

Ryan Bautista is the President and inventor of Bagnetic Bags, Steve Loureiro is the Vice President and business partner to Ryan.

How did one come up with this idea of a magnetic shopping bag?

Bagnetic was founded in 2009 by a young entrepreneur, Ryan Bautista. Having traveled extensively, he noticed that litter from plastic bags was commonplace in most countries. Research into the plastic bag dilemma revealed that less than 1% of them are recycled worldwide.  The vast majority end up in landfills, oceans or as litter, costing tax payers millions of dollars and harming valuable ecosystems. Inspired by Al Gore's documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth", Ryan felt it was time to contribute in reducing our carbon footprint. Ryan devised a way people can reduce their plastic bag consumption-all while adding affordable convenience to their shopping routine.

Research into the plastic bag dilemma led bagnetic to divise a plan to revolutionize the reusable bag industry by creating and easy to use bag, which is durable and easy to clean.  Bagnetic also wanted to create a bag that would not cause clutter, thus the magnets, allowing numerous bags to neatly stack together through their magnetic connection, allowing the bags to slide onto the existing grocery stand hooks found in many grocery stores.

Why are eco-friendly products so important to you?

In today's day and age we all need to do our part for the environment whether it be small or large, and Bagnetic has allowed me to become  part of something large.  Form a young age, I was instilled social responsibility from my family, and because of the knowledge gained threw them, I feel it is my duty to help educate others on the importance of doing the little things for our environment, and ridding of plastic bags once and for all is more than a little thing.

Why should consumers use Bagnetic vs the leading grocery store (.99 cent) bags?

Bagnetic bags are easy to fold which makes the Bagnetic bag compact enough to fit into a your hand, a purse, a key chain or a car cup holder.  The magnetic connection allows you to attach it to your refrigerator for an easy visual reminder and also allow the bags to be effortlessly hook together with the Bagnetic Hook.  They are manufactured from high quality fabric, free of AZO toxic chemical dye, are 100 percent washable and are designed to last for several years.  Also, Bagnetic reusable grocery bags effortlessly connect to each other, making it easier to be hooked onto your standard grocery stand, making it easy and convenient to store and carry.

The $0.99 totes often lose shape, absorb odor and do not last long and hold up lines at checkout counters by with crumpling and clutter.  Bagnetic bags eliminate all three common problems.  Some contain toxic dyes and they become unsanitary within a few uses due to the inability to wash.
Here's one from my three year old daughter, Will you be introducing any new colors? Maybe Orange?
There actually is a few colours coming in the near future, one being pink, and surprisingly your daughter is the first person to request the colour orange, but we will certainly keep it in mind :)

What kind of guarantee/warranty does Bagnetic offer their customers?

As for our guarantee on our products, we completely stand 100 percent behind the design and durability of our products and will certainly offer a replacement for any of our products, obviously within a reasonable time frame and if abuse is not apparent.  We have had maybe 5 returns in 9 months and we have sold over 80,000 units this year.  All we ask is that the customer either pay for shipping to us or return in person and we will arrange for a replacement product, if it is a manufactures defect, we will cover the complete cost and we will send a product out right away.

Will Bagnectic be introducing new Eco-Friendly products other than grocery bags in the future?

We are also introducing a new eco friendly water bottle in the near future, we have some great ideas and it will not be your typical bottle, it will certainly have some bagnetic flavour to it.

Now that we know more about Bagnetic Bags let's get to know more about the creator, How do you like to spend your spare time?

I enjoy spending time with friends and family and believe that a balanced life is the most important thing for any person.  Something else I enjoy doing is volunteering in the local community with park clean ups and coaching and and playing sports.  I am an avid soccer player and golf enthusiast.

What else would you like to share with my readers that you free is important either for the environment or for the consumer to know?

The average consumer assumes that buying any reusable bag is good, and it is better the conventional plastic bags, but they must also do there research.  Many bags such as the .99 cent totes found in many stores today contain toxic chemicals in there coloured dyes.  These dyes and flashy bright colours which they create are what attract the consumer to these bags, when the reality is, they may be more harmful than good.  Purchasing a higher end AZO chemical free bag will in turn help save the environment and will also last several times longer than the conventional .99 cent tote.  Everyone forgets that when you purchase a .99 cent tote, not only do u get what you pay for, but these bags will also end up in our landfills, so why not buy a strong AZO chemical free bag that will last much longer and stay away form our landfills for years to come

One Thing I would like to stress to your readers is that although you may feel something you do for the environment is minor, the effects on the environment and the people around you is major.  Anything whether large or small has a tremendous effect on our peers and our children.  We at Bagnetic feel everyone can help save the environment by using a bag that connects us all, and one bag at a time!

Tracking your Coupon Savings

Wouldn't it be great to have an easy way to track your coupon savings with Canadian stores? One that will update automatically to your blog and share on Facebook?

That is excatly what I was looking for since there seems to be tons out there for Americans. I love using coupon's and I would love to know how much in a year I have saved just from using them.

I was contacted by Lina of GroceryAlerts.ca to try out their coupon tracker. The coupon tracker is a tool that allows people to track how much they save annually using coupons and post it to their Facebook wall, website/blog or save it to Excel. You simply log into Facebook, enter how much you saved dollar wise, what store you bought at and on what date. You then click Submit coupon savings. When you are all done putting in your recent coupons you can share it on your Facebook wall or your blog. It will automatically update on your blog after you add it to your sidebar. To add to Facebook there is a tab to click on, then click update my wall. It's as simple as that.

Also check out GroceryAlerts blog to find great coupons, deals, reviews, articles and giveaways.

Poinsettia Day

Today is Poinsettia Day. The poinsettia is really popular around Christmas. I remember as a kid having them most years but that all depended on what our cat at the time was like with plants and if we could keep it high and out of reach. Now doing a little research I found that Poinsettia's are not as harmful as I always thought.

Poinsettia's are mildly toxic to cats.

"The milky sap of poinsettias can cause irritation of the mouth and digestive tract. A cat that has consumed portions of a poinsettia may experience excessive salivation and vomiting due to irritation of the gastrointestinal tract, but this should clear up on its own.
If a cat has ingested a large quantity of the poinsettia, placing a call to a veterinarian or local animal emergency clinic is recommended just to be on the safe side. However, this is unlikely, as poinsettias aren’t particularly tasty."  Referenced from Suite 101

A little bit of Wikipedia info on the poinsettia. "Euphorbia pulcherrima, commonly known as poinsettia or noche buena, is a species of flowering plant indigenous to Mexico and Central America. The name "poinsettia" is after Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first United States Minister to Mexico, who introduced the plant into the US in 1828. It is also called the Atatürk flower"

And here is one for the kids to color......

Today on my Oriental Trading Calendar it says December 9th is Christmas Card Day. I am yet again behind on my Christmas cards, this is nothing new the last few years. I guess again this year I will be handing them out just before Christmas if I get them done in time. I used to make my own with Rubber Stamping and Scrapbooking supplies but with my crazy life I haven't done that in a few years. I would love to start up again. Maybe even start up digitally again.

What do you do? Do you buy or make your own? Do you mail them or hand deliver? Do you order online or buy after Christmas for next year? I love to take advantage of Boxing week sales and get my cards 50% or even 75% off!

$5 Dinners

When I first started reading blogs I was looking for ways to make my dinners frugal and also how to incorporate coupons into my grocery shopping. $5 Dinners was one of the first blogs I followed because all her recipes are for... you guessed it meals for $5 or under. Yes, I know it's American but if you shop around you can also make meals close to that or cheaper. Use coupons and sales and stock up! I love the variety of recipes, check out the HUGE index of recipes here. Also there are great How-To's section here.

Now comes what I like the most...

Menu Planning. Without it I'm lost. I am not home most nights for dinner at the moment and it makes it hard for my mother to come up with idea's to make for my children. Usually I will menu plan, shop and sometimes cook the meals before work or at least get them started in the slow cooker. I am always on the lookout for menu plans already done up and come along with a grocery list. I have a hard time finding inexpensive menu plans though. Now I can head on over to $5 Dinners and grab a new menu plan and grocery list and be set for the Monday-Friday week.

Check out Erin's newest menu plan. You can subscribe to her FREE weekly menu plan here. The plan gets mailed out every Sunday evening and includes a printable grocery list! Right now there is also a giveaway for her $5 Dinner Cookbook. Everyone who subscribes to the Menu Plan emails has the chance to win 1 of 2 copies that are given away monthly.

Usually he is in bed and fast asleep by the time I get home. We try to make the best of what time we do have together. Intimacy is a huge part of staying connected in our minds and we enjoy planning out some fun time together. To spice things up abit for us I love sexy lingerie and candles.

With Christmas right around the corner, what a fun time to buy gifts for a spouse or friend, you know they will enjoy. Adopted Ed Book Review

November is National Adoption Month. I know we are at the end of November but I wanted to share this great children's book with you about adoption. The book is called Adopted Ed and is written by Darren Maddern.

Adopted Ed is illustrated beautifully with simple and fun characters. The story follows a little boy named Ed who has been adopted. We follow Ed through his early years, being bullied at school, learning and accepting he is adopted but special. I love the page where Ed says "My parents chose me, yours were stuck with you". I feel this is a great way to address adoption and how to handle being bullied with peers. It's a light hearted story even younger children can enjoy. My son had a lot of why's and wasn't quite sure about why Ed had been adopted but I will be reading this book again and discuss with him more about adoption. I think it was abit too advanced for my three year old to understand right now but in a year or so I think she will enjoy it also. I don't feel you need to be adopted to enjoy this book. It is a great way to teach children of the different situations that are around us and everyone is special.

The author Darren Maddern was adopted himself and wants to share his story with his readers. Please visit Adopted Ed to read more about Darren Maddern and his story. Also find out more about Adopted Ed and an upcoming new book called Tall Moll. You can also connect with Darren on Facebook and Twitter

Where to buy: You can find a copy of Adopted Ed at Amazon.com or Amazon.ca

Storyland Yoga Review and Giveaway!

With technology all around us these days we all know a lot of children don't get as much exercise as they should. Storyland Yoga reaches out to the children to be in touch with the environment, while the benefits of yoga provides them health, clarity, and calmness.

Playful Planet first DVD is Storyland Yoga. It is a Multiple Award-winner, winning the 2010 Parent's Choice ApprovedDr.Toy "Best Green Product," and Preferred Choice from Creative Child Magazine.

Storyland Yoga is a playful kid's yoga DVD geared for 3-8 years of age. Ahmed Fahmy is a Certified Children's Yoga instructor and he takes the children on two fun-filled adventures, Save the Whale and Condor Trek, in which they learn yoga poses by imitating animals and gain interest in the planet by helping endangered species.

Get ready to play – the planet-friendly way!

Review: I want to Thank Karen Duggan for letting my family review Storyland Yoga. We had a wonderful time doing both stories. My son and I did the Condor Trek right when the video came in. I will let everyone know if you don't already workout and you give these videos your all you may just feel it the next day or two! I know I did, mostly in the belly muscles. Both my children enjoyed following along with Ahmed and the children on the video. The video's are easy to follow along for all ages, even for mommies who have never done yoga before. Ahmed teaches the children during the stories about saving the condor babies (returning the eggs to the condor mommy) and also saving the whole who ends up on the beach. It gets the children in touch with the environment and saving the animals that are endangered.

Book Review: The Clinton St Baking Company

By Neil Kleinberg

From the Publisher: The Clinton St. Baking Company is one of the hottest brunch spots in a city obsessed with brunch. A tiny thirty-two-seat eatery on Manhattan's trendy Lower East Side, the restaurant draws long lines of customers who come from far and wide to sample fresh-baked goods, hearty omelets, sugar-cured bacon, and light-as-air pancakes with maple butter.

In the Clinton St. Baking Company Cookbook, owners DeDe Lahman and Neil Kleinberg share more than 100 treasured recipes that have made their restaurant a sensation. Learn the secret to their house-made buttermilk biscuits and tomato jam, irresistible muffins and scones, delicious soups and sandwiches, and their decadent, eye-catching desserts. Helpful techniques, like Neil's
patented omelet "flip and tuck," and gorgeous color photographs throughout will have readers cooking like pros in no time, and sharing the delicious results.

Review: Right away when I saw the cover and write up for this book I knew I would love it. I love to bake so who am I kidding when it comes to breakfast, cookies and muffins? When the book arrived for review my son opened it with me and right away we need to try the pancakes. We flipped through the book and a lot caught my attention as a must try. We chose two cookie recipes to start with since Christmas baking will be coming up. We tried Chocolate Chunk Cookies (p. 197) and Maple Walnut Cookies (p. 201). For both recipes the directions are pretty easy to follow and the ingredients are everyday pantry staples. Both of the cookies got a two thumbs up with my children of course. I loved how the chocolate chunk cookies had cinnamon in them, it made an interesting but good taste. My kids have put in a request for the next weekend I'm off to make pancakes. Maybe I will make them some nice homemade Clinton St. Baking Company Pancakes for Christmas morning!
Chocolate Chunk Cookies
These went over very well. Dh took a few to work and ended up with none for himself. They got great reviews from his co-workers.

Maple Walnut Cookies
These I could have baked a bit less but they are soooo good! I love these. I will be making them again and again. They taste great with a cold glass of milk. Hmm maybe Santa will put in a request for these :)

Where to buy it: You can find The Clinton St Baking Company Cookbook at Indigo.ca $22.56 Members or $23.75 and Amazon.ca for $22.56. Pre-Order today as the release date is November 8th, 2010

CSN Stores Review

I posted back in September about CSN Stores and how they have 200+ different stores online. I was given a giftcard to purchase something on their stores and review it. I had a really hard time to figure out what I would like to review. There are WAY too many things and takes a LONG time to browse through the stores. I don't think I even chiped a corner of whats available! Grab a cup of coffee while in your pj's and enjoy a nice shopping trip from the comfort of your own home.

So I looked and looked and looked. Finally I decided on a Pink popcorn maker. Actually a Pink Hello Kitty popcorn maker.
When I placed my order I did notice some high shipping prices, especially for smaller things. I was thinking of getting an apron but it was going to cost almost double with the shipping and international fees. That I would say is the only downside. They do offer a lot of items with free shipping, you just pay international fees(duty and brokerage - you then don't have to worry about it at the door). The shipping was extremely fast and I ordered on the weekend and it was here Friday morning before 10am!

Today we finally got a chance to pull this Kitty out and see how she works! This post will be picture heavy as the kids had a lot of fun. It's simple to use and clean. Add vegetable oil and popcorn kernels and turn it on.
Instead of "cheese" it was "popcorn!"

Parker adding the kernels

Abby waiting for the first POP!
When the popping is done you just put the top on the lid and flip the machine over and your ready to eat right from the pink bowl!

The end product. Believe me there wasn't much left after they got their hands on it!

The final review: I really enjoyed my shopping experience at the CSN Stores and would shop there again in the future!
