Life Update + A Few Goals for 2018!

source pixabay.com
I am super excited to get back into my reading this year!

I don't really know where to start with this post as I would like to let everyone know what has happened over the years to myself and this blog. Trying to keep some things personal I want to let everyone know that I was in a terrible personal relationship for years. It got worse the last few years and I put up with it until I just couldn't handle it anymore. I totally lost myself from it all. I stopped enjoying the things that I have always loved - reading, baking, cooking, doing really anything. I went to work, tried to take care of the household, kids and spouse only to be taken advantage of by him. Emotionally abused, gas lighted, cheated on and so on. Fast forward just about two years to 2018, I am free and I am happy. It is still a journey I will be on for sometime but I am finding peace and loving life. I started picking up hobbies that I used to enjoy and find I am fully enjoying them again not just going through the motions because I think this will help me feel better.

I am working towards catching up on reviewing books that are on my to-be-read shelf and returning emails to those who have sent me emails over the last couple of years. I want to get back into blogging full time again! I used to take great joy in it and loved spending time with my children reviewing products and books with them.

For the next couple months I will start slowly back to blogging. I will aim for 2-3 posts each week and work on cleaning out my email inbox. I will be working on sharing personal life posts again, maybe a couple a month along with food and fitness posts. I have been working towards some personal goals the last few years and keep adding to them as time goes on. This year I would really like to pursue jornaling of some sort - gratitude likely being what I will start with.  Also would like to add in Meditation and mindfulness. Keeping quotes has been something I have enjoyed over the last year. I will post some on my blog that I think you may enjoy too.

That's it for now. Next week I will post my reading goals as I am working on them right now.

Have a fantastic rest of the week & weekend!

Libido Reboot: A Widow's Sexual Journey by L. A. Maria ~ Audiobook Review

Book Description:

Libido Reboot: A Widow's Sexual Journey is a true story about the sexual reawakening of a woman after several years of celibacy following the death of her husband. It is an honest account of her search for sexual gratification gained through sex toys, escort services, and online hookup and dating sites. Her experience led her to believe that others, in particular, baby boomers, could learn and be inspired by her journey. This timely book provides excellent relationship advice designed to help both men and women ultimately discover how good sex and intimacy is for their health and well-being.

Purchase a copy on Audible.

Review:

This is not an erotica but more a memoir of a lady in her 50's that would like to share her experiences for others to learn from. It could be for both men and women but not for the young as the author tells us in the beginning of the book. I am only 35 and my husband is 47, I found that I enjoyed hearing about how the author explored her sexual needs after her libido came rushing back about five years after her husband of 40+ yrs passed away. The author had only been with one man in her life and realized how "vanilla" their love life was. She had many different experiences that she shares with her readers from getting a play toy to hiring an escort to fulfill her needs.

It's a quick audiobook which was great for my drive to and from work one night. Something different to listen to as I have been really only reading thrillers/crime novels and health audiobooks and podcasts.

I give this book a 4 out of 5. The narrator also did a great job on keeping my interest without being mono-toned or slow.

Where is Genuine Jenn headed this year?

Source

Last month I posted about Genuine Jenn being back and then, gasp.. only a couple book reviews got posted. Why? I'm not 100% sure. I know I wasn't really feeling it when I would get onto my laptop. I figured it had a lot to do with the negatives of the past. I have been purging a lot and I still have a lot more to purge to remove more of the negative memories of my past. I know have a new chrome book and hope to get writing and sharing more, even if it is only a couple times a week. Small steps at first, right?

Book Reviews

Yes, I will still be reading and reviewing books. This is something I love to do but have found that I don't spend as much time reading at the moment. I have a lot of "life things" that I have been working on this past last year. I want to be more present and in the now which has meant less online time. One big goal is to get reviewers back on the blog to help with book reviews. So if you are reading this post and love to read books send me an email or tweet, you may just be who I am looking for to help with Genuine Jenn.

Branching out again

I would really like to branch out with Genuine Jenn. I used to post about products the kids and I were using, foods, toys, movies, etc. I would like to go back there and write about things like that and also everyday life. I am not sure how many of you are interested in whole foods, fitness, healthy living, DIY, gardening etc but I have really started doing more of these things over the last couple years and I would love to share my experience with you. I have also been wanting to get back into my fiction writing. I am hoping this will give me a little push towards it.

What else?

Last week I met with a local author friend to talk about some ideas he had about helping other independent local authors and he wanted my help. I am hoping this will take off this year as I think it is a great idea and can't wait to be part of it. I know I am not going into this because I don't know all the details yet but once I do I will be posting about it for sure. If you are in the Ottawa Ontario area keep an eye out for info!

Until then............

Genuine Jenn is back!

Hi readers!

It has been a long year and I have been working through some personal family things. I am now working my way back into blogging. I have missed posting my reviews and look forward to connecting with authors, readers and other bloggers. This is a new year, a new start in life and so much more. Lets connect and chat!

This year I will still be posting reviews on fiction books but I will be posting more personal development, fitness and health books as this is where my life is at the present time. I may also write more personal posts but this is still undecided. I would like to share my past experience and help others who have been through the same or going through it right now but I am not sure I am there just yet.

Keep your eyes peeled for new reviews as I have still been reading and have a stack of books that are waiting on reviews. I am starting out slow so I am aiming for two reviews each week.

If you love to read. I am still looking for other readers who are interested in being part of the Genuine Jenn review team. Shoot me an email from the Contact page.

Keep smiling! Life is Beautiful!

I will be sharing my own Short Stories & Creative Writing in 2016

As you know from visiting Genuine Jenn, I read a lot! I get tons of requests to read so many great books by authors that traditionally publish with big publishing houses and also authors who publish with smaller presses. Yes, I also read self or Indie published books! I have met some amazing people through reviewing books on Genuine Jenn, Goodreads and Amazon.

I have recently decided it was time to try my hand at some writing other than writing reviews on the blog. I have enrolled in an online creative writing course and I have picked up a few books on writing. A few author friends I have met online have also been super supportive, along with family and friends. I would like to post some of my personal work on Genuine Jenn, short stories and writing prompts that I take part in, I hope you will look forward to them and enjoy reading what I write.

Thank you for all the support over the last five + years and hope you will continue to enjoy your visits to Genuine Jenn!

I Challenge You to #Unplug

Life used to be simple. When I think about the simple life I wonder if I remember it as simple because I was a kid. We were expected to be good and have fun as kids, play outside and spend time with friends. Now looking at things they seem more complex even for kids. Everyone is so connected these days to TV, laptops, tablets, smartphones and handheld game devices. I remember having a gaming system but we didn't use it that much. If I wasn't out with my friends playing in the neighborhood I was reading a book, doing homework, spending time with my family or figure skating.

This blog post was actually started about a year ago! I can't believe a year has past and I didn't post this. I had a conversation on Twitter one night with a couple ladies about the addiction to our electronic devises or better yet our social media. We discussed different ways on how we could unplug more from our smartphones and social media. A year before this conversation I had challenged myself to unplug each day just before the kids came home from school. I would turn off the laptop and limit my use of my smartphone/tablet. I would actually turn it off on Friday nights and leave it off until mid day Saturday. I know that isn't long but it is when you are always connected, right?

In this day and age I would say the majority of people are connected to the web by either a phone, tablet or computer/laptop. We are consumed by social media like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc. We will have a conversation through text or social media before even picking our telephone. How many times do you see two people sitting together and both of them are on their phones? This is now highly common, just look around the next time you are out.

Has society helped us be more plugged in? Yes, I think so. The whole start to smartphones and apps. Social media on the go at the touch of our fingertips. It is so easy to stay connected ALL the time.  Do we need to be that connected at all times? How many times do you go out to dinner or a walk and put away the phone? I see lots of people with their phones on the table at restaurants.

Lately I have found Facebook to be really toxic. Lots of people like to post nasty comments to people and attack people for things that are just petty. I decided last Wednesday I would log out of Facebook and take some time off. I am popping once a day to check in on my fitness groups but that is all. I do not want the toxic atmosphere. Plus I find we waste so much time on Social Media where we could be putting this time into something worthwhile. What ever happened to picking up a book or magazine, actually reading articles instead of just junk?

I found a great podcast last week just at the right time about How to Unplug. Brendon Burchard talks about that first hour in the morning and the last hour at night. We always feel like we need to check in and give all our time away. Check out Brendon's post. You really can accomplish so much more when you are not mindlessly checking to social media every 10 minutes.

My Challenge to You!

So here is my challenge to you! Set up a time slot where you can put away all devises that connect you to the internet and social media. Maybe you want to put away your phone during dinner or after 8pm. Spend more time with your family or spouse without your phone.

I am taking my challenge a bit bigger this time around. I am putting this in place for the next 30 days and see how I do. I will also journal how it is going. Check back to see how I am doing and hold me accountable!
  • I will schedule 30-60 minutes a day (Monday to Friday) that I will check into Facebook. I will leave it logged out on my phone. This is to check into my fitness challenge group and check in with friends. I am thinking of breaking it up into 20 minutes at a time or less.
  • Do not check into any social media or email for the first hour of the day!
  • Stop checking email and social media at 8pm daily. I will allow myself to post Sweaty Selfies after 8 but will wait until the following day to check into challenge groups on Facebook etc.
Will you take the challenge with me? Post in the comments below how you will challenge yourself to unplug.

Review:

I have enjoyed fiction books that are very similar to Fifty Shades of Grey so I thought I would give this book a chance and see what it could tell me more about BDSM. It is a quick read. I find it more for a beginner into BDSM and each chapter gives quotes from the Fifty Shades of Grey series. The "Blow by Blow" I felt was sort of like reading a erotica but the author wants you to place yourself as the characters with your other half. I will admit there were some hot scenes in this book. Then it explains how to achieve each BDSM that it was playing out in the blow by blow. There is info for the beginner, intermediate and advanced individuals. I think it is a great starter for anyone looking to know more about BDSM. I think I will stick to erotica fiction for myself.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

About Me ~ Day #1 Challenge

This picture is the best more recent one but it is still a yr old.

Today's challenge is an introduction and recent photo. I will admit one thing I do not like are photos of myself. I have a feeling these challenges are going to have me stepping outside of my comfort zone. That is okay through as I am trying to become less introverted and try to be less shy.

My name is Jennifer and I am in my early 30's. My birthday is December 19th. I am a mother of two, P & A who are 7 & 6 years old. I am with my best friend & high school sweetheart. We are not "officially" married but we are common law and might as we be married as neither of us intend on going anywhere until death due us part. I work full time overnights in a group home for developmentally disabled adults. I went to school to become a Developmental Services worker in 2000 and graduated with Dean's Honors in 2002. It is amazing thinking back now as I have been working in this field since I was in high school, about 15 years. I have been blogging for almost four years and love all the opportunities that have come with it and all the fabulous people I have meet because of blogging and social media.

Tomorrow is 20 Things about Me. I will stop here as I will tell you more about myself in tomorrows post and throughout the month of February.

Writing Challenge for February 2014

With my goal in mind for writing more during 2014 I hit up Google over the weekend. When searching 30 day challenge I decided to check out the image section and you would be amazed with all the different challenges there are out there - fitness, photo, writing, blogging, organizing and so forth. I will start with a blog writing challenge but some of the others seemed interesting for sure!

The challenge I found that I liked the best for my first month is actually a 31 day and yes I know February has only 28 days this year. I will try and write an extra on a couple days. This is an old challenge but I don't mind trying it out before I link up to an active challenge.

Over the month of February you will get to know the person behind this blog and I hope you will enjoy.

I am a reader not a writer

I have never been a writer. I have always loved to read. Even when I was a child I would keep a list of books I read and challenge myself to read more. In school we would have a goal for reading and I would always try to surpass it by a mile. I could sit and read all day if I was left to it.

I just never considered myself a writer. I have always been horrible with spelling and grammar and would curse the English language as a child. Why does there need to be so many different ways to spell one word? I mean I know they have different meanings but really why do they need to have different spelling? Witch which is which? haha.

I remember when I was having a hard time spelling one of my elementary teachers told my parents that I should read more. Little did she know that I already read daily and more than my peers. This I think was when the "book list" came about.

One summer I read 100 books. Did it help me with my spelling and grammar? No. Even after writing a blog, being social on social media and still reading tons of books hasn't helped. I have gotten better. I have also never been one to write my own stories but I would like to change this. I would like to "write" more on my blog. I would like to share more of my thoughts without it being in a review. I love to review products and books but I would also love to learn how to share more of my ideas and thoughts on my blog. I think that I am more afraid to open up and be criticized for my writing style.

I have decided to work on blog writing challenges and reading memes. Each week I will aim for a personal post of some sort. I hope you will continue to stop by my blog and maybe share your thoughts in the comments below.

Happy Monday!

I have finally been hit with the....

Computer scam!

There I was sleeping soundly, may I add finally after a restless night and the phone rings! REALLY who would be calling me before the alarm goes off? I rolled over and reached for the phone just in case it was an emergency. Hubby had already left for his morning commute.

So I look at my phone and see no number only the word "recon" hmm.. before 7am. Alright I'll answer and humor the person. Sure enough it was someone from across the world calling me by my last name and saying he wants to help with my computer. Wait one minute.... I don't have a computer! So I told him that and he says "laptop, I mean" okay here we go. I don't have one of those either. He hung up.

Now some people have told me they usually have them not believe they don't have a computer. Maybe he realized I wasn't a happy camper with this phone call.

People please beware. I know everyone knows the drill but if anyone calls you looking for private information or about your computer ask to call them back. Ask for a letter to come in the mail.

Don't give out your information!

I have also heard a lot of people getting emails or Facebook messages from friends saying they need money now to help they get out of a country they went on vacation to and lost their wallet. Please call your friend before ever agreeing to send money.

Be safe out there!

As I was just about to hit publish I got another scam call but this one was about my credit card. YIKES I better stop answering the phone!

5 Tips on Getting Your Creative Juices Flowing

As a blogger we are indeed writer's even if we don't think we are. I for one have felt this way for a while now. I keep telling myself "I'm not a writer, never was, never will be". This is the year I will change my thinking and think of my self as a writer, a writer of my blog Genuine Jenn.

I recently shared some of my tips to stay organized and keeping my creative juices flowing as a blogger with a fellow blogger and decided I would post about it for others to read also. I will split these into two posts. Watch for a post on tips to stay organized when blogging coming soon.

5 Tips on getting your creative juices flowing:

Go for a long walk - grab your dog or just your iPod and go for a nice long walk. I find if I go on a nature walk this is a great way to clear my head.

Grab your camera and start snapping - charge up your camera or cell phone and take a walk. This walk could be around your house, or out in nature or just through your town or city. Take photos of anything and everything. When you get home load them up and see what comes to mind. Start writing about what these photos are of or mean to you.

Take some "Me" time - take a nice long warm bath, snuggle up and read a book, go grab a coffee with a friend. These things are great for clearing your mind and once you have a clear mind it is so much easier to write.

Disconnect - I know this one is a hard one for most people these days. I used to find this so hard to do. I have come to learn to take time off from social media sites, email and even my blog. I find taking some time off even a few hours each night or time off during the day keeps me more focused when I go back online and it clears my mind.

Writing Prompts - I have also found writing prompts to be a good way to get my brain thinking again. There are many different sites and blogs that offer tips/prompts. There are also blog sites that offer daily writing prompts like Blog Dare @ Bloggy Moms.

Writer's Block or Lack of Writing Mojo

To be totally honest with my readers I can be EXTREMELY hard on myself. I have always been this way. I can easily put myself down and usually it is for nothing or something small but to me it can be big.

Over the last two and a half years, almost three in May I have had times where I have wanted to throw in the blogging towel. Not because I don't like blogging anymore but because I was just overwhelmed or had the winter blues.

I started to realize I am not the only once that gets writer's block or as some bloggers put it losing the blogging mojo. I have sometimes been just overwhelmed in life and sometimes with the things I have taken on for my blog. Usually when this happens I step back and think do I still love blogging? The answer is always Yes.

I think with all things we sometimes just need to take a breather or a short break. Sometimes for me it is just scheduling "me" time to read, take a walk or get away from the computer. I started my blog for a way to have something for me. I work a sometimes high stress job, I commute an hour each way. The time I could sit down and blog was just what I needed. Plus on the bright side I didn't have to pull out tons of equipment to blog, just my netbook.

I always tell myself I am not a writer but in all reality I am. I write this blog. Yes, sometimes I have spelling mistakes or grammar errors. Sometimes run on sentences but if you know me I can have run on sentences when talking :) I want to become a better writer and have decided I will look for a course to take in creative writing.

This year I do plan to put more of me out in my blog. Something I have been hiding from since the beginning I guess. I think this is where my shyness comes in on my blog. I have a hard time opening up to people and well who really reads my blog? Some days there are tons of strangers stopping by.  If you stop by lets get to know each other, leave me a comment.

Watch for a post later this week (or weekend) for my tips I use to regain my mojo and stay organized when blogging.

Do you read E-Books?

I was an avid reader until having two babies at home and not a lot of time for myself. Instead I opted for reading magazines, cookbooks and blogs. I am not an avid T.V watcher anymore and I don't follow a series each week. I do like to catch up on shows I love here and there. Mostly on my overnights as I work cleaning the house I work in.

I really want to get back to reading more novels, non-fiction and fiction. I tried my hand at e-books about a year ago and couldn't really get into sitting at a computer to read for long periods, plus I didn't have a mobile computer just a desktop PC. Now that I have a netbook and I am waiting on a Tablet to arrive any day now, I am going to try again with e-reading.

I love the concept of e-books, as you can always have books on hand where ever you go. It is lighter to travel with e-books but you need a reader or netbook that has a battery that will last longer than an hour. My poor netbook last about an hour - hour and a half. My new tablet is suppose to be

Now that I am a new e-book reader I will be looking at all the available programs to use on my netbook and tablet (as soon as it arrives). There are many available on the web. Here are the top three I want to check out first - Kindle for PC, Mobipocket Reader, and the Sony Reader.

If you have any that you love please let me know, I am looking for something I can manage e-books into a collection, by genre, author etc, be able to bookmark and highlight. I also want to be able to read PDF books. I have heard good things about Mobipocket and will be checking this one out this week.

Watch for some fun reviews, giveaways, and more!

Saying No.....

The Blog Dare on Bloggy Moms
I am joining in on the Bloggy Moms The Blog Dare. I tried this before but fell off the wagon. This time I would love to try to incorporate at least one post a week from the #BlogDare to share with you.

Today the writing prompt is Saying "No". This one should be pretty easy to write about as I really do have a hard time saying "no". I have been working hard on changing this as sometimes saying no is a good thing, we don't always have to say yes and sometimes it is better if we do say no.

We can easily stretch over selves too thin when we feel the need to always say Yes to everything/everyone that comes our way. I am a dedicated friend and have actually found out saying yes and helping people out sometimes can do more harm to the friendship than saying no would have been. I think it is easier to get over the no than saying yes and then having a hard time later.

I have also learned that sometimes this can really play havoc on our bodies when we say yes and then think why did I say yes. We may feel like this either because we are too tired, had to cancel plans or for another reason. I am not saying we should say no to everyone all the time but we should feel okay to say no when we don't feel like doing something or can't help in the way the person needs the help.

Here is one that people and myself have a hard time saying no too. Lending family or friends money when they need to purchase something or need money to get to the next pay day. Then in return the person takes advantage of you or they take a really long time to pay back the amount borrowed. Let's face it, I hear it all the time that people can not just give away money as most of us have a budget.

Do you have a hard time to say "no"? How has this affected you?

Gaining Confidence

Just over a week ago I traveled to Washington,DC for a food blog conference called Eat, Write, Retreat. This conference did more than give me tons of great information, networking with great food bloggers, writers and brands but gave me more independence and confidence.

I had never been on a plane before and very rarely would I travel alone. I have never went to a different place that I have never been to before by myself. I was a nervous wreck leading up to the flight. I don't really even know what I was so afraid of besides the unknown.

MIA - Where was I?

Last week I was MIA, not sure if anyone noticed the lack of posts around here but I wanted to let you know that I am alive and kicking a cold. I will be posting tons of new reviews and articles over the next couple weeks before my trip to Washington DC for the Eat, Write, Retreat conference I am attending! You can read more about it over on Marvelous Mommy  Meals.

The last week was crazy busy with work and training at work. I really didn't have a day off all week until Monday morning. Of course with all the lack of sleep and people sick I picked up a nice head cold for myself.

I hope everyone is having a great Tuesday!

Fit & Firm Fridays

Last week I totally missed posting a quick update and for that I am sorry. I am really not sure if anyone is following this but if you are I haven't totally even up on the healthy lifestyle just yet. haha

With all the snow we have gotten in the last couple big snow falls I have been doing some great workouts in our driveway! It can be a lot of work clearing out the end of a double (well it actually fits four vehicles in total) lane driveway.

I haven't lost any weight yet but I also haven't gained any; that's a good thing right?

I still need to work on the drinking more water. I just don't like tap water and at work that is pretty much all we have available. I need to figure out a solution to this problem as I do find myself thirsty overnight. I have been pretty good with the snacking. Usually a bowl of cereal in the early am and maybe veggies or a fruit at night. I have been trying to have a snack before work if I am hungry but lately I haven't been!

I am thinking about getting myself on more vitamins to health with the getting and staying healthy part. A B12 vitamin and a multi-vitamin are both good ideas and I have been on those both. It is to remember to take them daily.

I have been walking a lot more. We (kids and I) have taken longer walks to the store or the park. I have been walking to any place that is in the downtown area and briskly walk when the kids are not with me. I had 2 nice walks today already. I found out we have a walking track at our community centre and may just have to venture over there someday soon.
Also found a tasty sweet snack Chocolate Chip Fudgie Cups made with Equal!

What was the #1 song when you were born?

The other day on Twitter @DoritosCanada asked "In celebration of the Doritos Taco Time Machine, we want to know: What was the #1 song, on the day you were born?"

Well I just had to look. Why wouldn't I want to see what was Hot on December 19th, 1981. 30 years ago Olivia Newton-John had the #1 song on the US Billboards "Physical". If you don't know or don't remember then you really should watch the video below. If you need a reason to watch, how about just to get a good chuckle?

Now I am asking you to head over to the List of number one hits and tell me what song was big on your day!
