Haunting of the Blackthorne House by Bruce Knapp ~ Book Review

Book Description:

Could the curse of a rural town warp Joseph Blackthorne enough to make him commit murder?

When Joseph Blackthorne gets the opportunity of a lifetime, he jumps at it. But he does not believe in the supernatural and thinks it's the result of folklore or the fallible human psyche.

However, he disregards the warning from a local and relocates his house to a forbidden hill, which begins a series of events that will shake this town to its core.

As the dark history of Blackwater unravels, Joseph conceals his problems with alcohol, but history like his drinking keeps repeating itself. Is it too late to save his family, business, town, or hell even himself?

The town of Blackwater is fraught with evil, which consumes us all, one way or another.

Author's Goodreads.

Review:

A short horror story that can be read in a sitting. It took me a little longer than I thought to get through this one. I am going to blame reading when I was tired and not feeling great. It is a twisted paranormal/horror story, cult like set in the 1950's. Gruesome in parts, slow in others. Evil lurks in the Blackthorne house which was built on a hill by an old cemetery and water well that had a witch hung from it.

I found the author's writing style did fit the theme of the story and I did enjoy it. I would recommend it to readers of short stories. I think that it could have been developed a bit more and had some more interaction in it with the characters.

I give this a 3 out of 5 stars.

She went to New York City for the first time on a leap of faith, on her very first day of college after never visiting the city before. She's held a variety of jobs, but some of the quirkiest ones are as a reader to the blind, greeting card assembler, and overnight mail stuffer, but it was while working as a manager for a global telecom software company she wrote the majority of her first young adult novel. Like many of her characters, Michelle is a culmination of a wide range of experiences, and these are what inspire her diverse characters and richly creative fantasy worlds.
Michelle has been writing since she was six years old. She received national recognition when her debut book Do You? was a finalist in the Writers' Digest International Self-Published Book Awards, the New York Book Festival, and the Global E-book Awards. And now Michelle's journey continues with new experiences developing day-by-day as she lives and writes in NJ with her husband of twenty-plus years, teenaged lyricist son, diva cat, and her monster-sized goldfish, crafting stories to delight readers young and old.

Book Review by Carmen:
This book was unfortunately not quite for me. The writing was fine; but the story didn't catch my attention. The initial blurb sounded interesting, though it turned out to be a little too YA for me. If you're into paranormal/fantasy YA that has a strong female (protagonist) character, then try picking this book up. I ended up giving this book a two star rating and got a copy in exchange for an honest review.

Book Review by Carmen:
A lot of this story takes place in desert-like surroundings; having a fairly Middle Eastern setting with a fantasy element to it. One thing to keep in mind if you happen to pick this book up is that there is a bit of scene setting in the beginning of this novel. This novel also has aspects of paranormal to it; there are times where you dive into the world of occult. I get the idea that there might be a second book following this one, since by the end of it, there are still one or two loose ends that need to be resolved. I ended up giving this book a four star rating and got a copy in exchange for an honest review.

Book Review by Carmen:
I enjoyed the relationship that Karina Redfeather and Simon DesRosiers has; though I would have liked it if there had been a little bit more about the characters with their background, but the story does start off with a very intriguing concept. I ended up giving this book a four star rating and got a copy in exchange for an honest review.

About the Author:

Weiss worked overseas for nearly twenty years in the fringes of the former USSR, Africa, and deep in the Afghan war zone. Weiss believes that life is as magical as you want to make it. Weiss never met a dessert she didn’t like, and her guilty pleasures are watching Ghost Whisperer reruns and drinking red wine.

Review:

This is definitely a cozy mystery. Three friends that have grown up together are still there for each other even when a murder takes place in one of their business. Is Maddie's best friend a killer or is there something weird going on at the Paranormal Museum? Maddie isn't sure what she really wants to do with her life and has the opportunity to take over the Paranormal Museum and fix it up.
I fell in love with all the characters, wondering who was involved with whom and if they could possibly a murderer. Right from the beginning I knew Maddie would love the Paranormal Museum but to try and solve the murder on her own without the police help? This is a fun cozy murder mystery with a back drop in wine country along with a fun paranormal feel. Do you believe in ghosts? This isn't a scary book or really much into spirit world. There is a few things that happen that could make one think there is a ghost in the museum.

I give this book a 3.5 out of 5 stars. I enjoyed this book, it was a quick, easy, fun read that would be great for anyone that wants something they can read on vacation or when you need something you can put down whenever, just picking up where you left off without worrying about forgetting what is happening.

The Summer of Shambles by Ebony McKenna - Book Review

Book Description:
Dive into this wonderfully witty young adult series from author Ebony McKenna, set in the far off European country of Brugel.

When he briefly transforms into his human self, Ondine is smitten. If only she can break the spell for good, Shambles can be handsomely human on a full-time basis.
During the summer, these two misfits uncover a plot to assassinate a member of the royal family and discover a secret treasure that has remained hidden for decades. This attracts the attention of the arrogant Lord Vincent, and Ondine can't help being drawn in by his bad-boy charm.
With so many demands on Ondine's attentions - and affections - normal has never seemed so far away.
The Summer of Shambles is the first in the four-part ONDINE series. Fans of The Princess Bride or the Confessions of Georgia Nicolson series will love this delightfully quirky fairytale.

Author Bio:
As a teenager, Ebony lived and worked in her family's restaurant, which provided much of the inspiration for the Ondine novels. Ebony waitressed, prepared food - and yep - washed dishes. So many dishes.
In the 1990s she worked as an award winning journalist on many leading Melbourne newspapers. By day she wrote other people's stories, but by night she plotted epic adventures. Now she writes novels for a living.

Ebony McKenna lives in Melbourne, Australia with her husband and young son.
She loves gadgets and anything futuristic. Doctor Who and The Goodies have always been TV treats. A weekly trivia night at the local pub allows her to show off her knowledge of 1980s pop music. She recently appeared on the TV quiz show Million Dollar Minute, where she was the reigning champion across 4 nights.
Coffee, chocolate and Facebook games are her worst vices. Playing with her son's toys is fun and reading to him at bedtime is a joy.
A huge influence was British humorist and author Frank Muir. For sixteen years Ebony and Frank swapped letters filled with family anecdotes and stories. They later met in 1995, dining at The Groucho Club in London. While there, one of her other literary heroes, Douglas Adams, was pitching "something rather exciting and complicated to a couple of suits at the next table."

Book Review by Carmen:
This novel turned out to be a highly entertaining read, especially the character Hamish McPhee (Shambles the ferret). This novel has awesomely quirky footnotes as well, but the overall writing style is wonderfully quirky. This gets a full five star rating from me, and I got a copy in exchange for an honest review. If you enjoy quirky and humorous books, be sure to put this one on your to-be-read list!

On a Pale Horse Book Tour

And behold a pale horse that carried the name death….
Management of The Underground, a New York club with a reputation for delivering a host of guilty pleasures, could have been a whole lot more fun if Cloris didn’t spend half that time avoiding Hades. Despite the burning attraction to the former God of the Underworld, she still harbors a nagging fear that her advances could rekindle the disturbing experiences of Hel’s hospitality. But when the four horsemen discover that it may be possible to hang up their mantels for good, Cloris is torn between her desire to no longer be a horseman and her hesitation that she could be anything other than death….
Regardless of the scars he gathered from enduring time at the hands of Hel, Hades craves nothing more than to immerse himself in Cloris’s attentions. Frustrated by his inability to convince her that he desires her in every imaginable way, he fears she only sees him as damaged or worthless. But when the horsemen decide to truly embrace mortality, he realizes that he will have to move quickly… or risk losing her forever.
In a race to the end, can Cloris and Hades embrace the love they could possibly share or will their stubbornness doom the horseman to live a life worse than death —remaining horseman forever?

House of Judges by Keary Taylor ~ Book Review

Book Synopsis:
Alivia once led a House full of immortal vampires, but now everything has been stripped away. Her friends have turned their backs on her, convinced she betrayed them and their Born kind. Taken prisoner to the King’s Court, she awaits her trial. But the sins of her father threaten to blacken her chances of clearing her name. Alivia toyed with King Cyrus’ heart—and now, he’s going to make her pay. Perhaps with her life. Hidden in the belly of the castle, truths will come to light, and the surface of the King’s brutality and the horrors of the castle have barely been scratched. Prepare to be judged…

Book Review:
Mon Dieu! I love this series! As the fourth installment of the House of Royals, the author Taylor takes us further into Alivia’s journey into a leadership position she never desired or thought even existed. Even though this is a paranormal book, Taylor’s writing is a contradiction - bring a very human, normal aspect.

Her words create a world of imagery. And, even though you may have a handle on the story with predictions, this is Taylor’s story. She has control over the story, and tells it very well. (This is why we read book - let the author delivery a story in a fantastic way!) There is so much raw emotion and depth in this book.

Alivia must answer for misgivings. She has played a dangerous game. She willfully entered a love triangle, knowing exactly where her heart belonged. She knew how dangerous and sadistic the King of vampires really was; yet, she toyed with his heart. She was aware of the trouble brewing in her territory, but used others to settle personal grudges. Yes, she will be judged and must answer for her transgressions.

We are all faced with difficult decisions and the impacts of our actions. Some stories acknowledge the dilemma(s) but breeze through either the decision making process or its concussion(s). Not this book. It’s so real and organic - it gives a natural outlook to the supernatural.

But, don’t think you can read this fourth book and feel closer. This is Keary Taylor we’re talking about. There is a huge cliff hanger at the end that opens a whole different story and the conclusion (I think) to the House of Royals in book five...

This is a must read, only if you read the first three. And, if you haven’t, do it! C’est bien, Taylor!

Kaitlin's Tale by Christine Amsden ~ Book Review

Kaitlin Mayer is on the run from the father of her baby – a vampire who wants her to join him in deadly eternity. Terrified for her young son, she seeks sanctuary with the Hunters Guild. Yet they have their own plans for her son, and her hopes of safety are soon shattered.
When she runs into Matthew Blair, an old nemesis with an agenda of his own, she dares to hope for a new escape. But Matthew is a telepath, and Kaitlin's past is full of dark secrets she never intended to reveal.
*Companion to the Cassie Scot Series*

About the author:

Christine Amsden has been writing fantasy and science fiction for as long as she can remember. She loves to write and it is her dream that others will be inspired by this love and by her stories. Speculative fiction is fun, magical, and imaginative but great speculative fiction is about real people defining themselves through extraordinary situations. Christine writes primarily about people and relationships, and it is in this way that she strives to make science fiction and fantasy meaningful for everyone.
At the age of 16, Christine was diagnosed with Stargardt’s Disease, which scars the retina and causes a loss of central vision. She is now legally blind, but has not let this slow her down or get in the way of her dreams.
Christine currently lives in the Kansas City area with her husband, Austin, who has been her biggest fan and the key to her success. In addition to being a writer, she's a freelance editor, mom, and foster mom.

My Review:

Amazing! As a fan of the Cassie Scot series and Madison's Song, i didn't expect much less. Dishes were forgotten, laundry left unfolded, toys left alone at night, all so i could not miss a moment of another one of Christine's adventure packed stories. Christine is a natural and talented storyteller and it's hard not to fall in love with her characters.

As a past fan, I never thought I would be excited to follow Matthew (due to his past transgressions), but I was instantly won over. I began rooting for his character as it developed into a man with passion of something we all can relate to; true love.

Kaitlin only wants what every mother wants. Safety and security, and when she realizes the hunters guild isn't the best place for her extraordinarily powerful 18month old she soon puts her trust in the last man she thought she could rely on; Matthew.

Christine, I have so many questions but don't want to give spoilers so please just tell me there will be more!!

5 bright stars from me, another job very well done Christine!
