The Push by Ashley Audrain ~ Book Review

Book Description:

A tense, page-turning psychological drama about the making and breaking of a family–and a woman whose experience of motherhood is nothing at all what she hoped for–and everything she feared.

Blythe Connor is determined that she will be the warm, comforting mother to her new baby Violet that she herself never had.

But in the thick of motherhood’s exhausting early days, Blythe becomes convinced that something is wrong with her daughter–she doesn’t behave like most children do.

Or is it all in Blythe’s head? Her husband, Fox, says she’s imagining things. The more Fox dismisses her fears, the more Blythe begins to question her own sanity, and the more we begin to question what Blythe is telling us about her life as well.

Then their son Sam is born–and with him, Blythe has the blissful connection she’d always imagined with her child. Even Violet seems to love her little brother. But when life as they know it is changed in an instant, the devastating fall-out forces Blythe to face the truth.

The Push is a tour de force you will read in a sitting, an utterly immersive novel that will challenge everything you think you know about motherhood, about what we owe our children, and what it feels like when women are not believed.

Review:

When I picked up this novel I didn't realize that it was written by a debut author. Ashley Audrain pulls you right into this novel from the very first page. I had to literally force myself to put the book down and get some sleep as I had to work the next morning. I am sure I could have read the whole book in one sitting. The chapters are short and it weaves back and forth between different characters, I didn't find it hard to follow but I know some people don't like the alternate POV. This is a psychological suspense that will have you at the end of your seat wondering what will happen next. It is not one of those scary, murder mysteries. It is a story that follows three mothers and their mental health during motherhood. It will make you stop and think about things your own mother or yourself may have thought or down. This book brought me to tears and gave me goosebumps. I still think about it and know I will likely read this one again. I look forward to reading more by Audrain.

I give this book a 5 stars!

Invisible Girl by Lisa Jewel ~ Book Review

Book Description:

Owen Pick’s life is falling apart.

In his thirties, a virgin, and living in his aunt’s spare bedroom, he has just been suspended from his job as a geography teacher after accusations of sexual misconduct, which he strongly denies. Searching for professional advice online, he is inadvertently sucked into the dark world of incel—involuntary celibate—forums, where he meets the charismatic, mysterious, and sinister Bryn.

Across the street from Owen lives the Fours family, headed by mom Cate, a physiotherapist, and dad Roan, a child psychologist. But the Fours family have a bad feeling about their neighbor Owen. He’s a bit creepy and their teenaged daughter swears he followed her home from the train station one night.

Meanwhile, young Saffyre Maddox spent three years as a patient of Roan Fours. Feeling abandoned when their therapy ends, she searches for other ways to maintain her connection with him, following him in the shadows and learning more than she wanted to know about Roan and his family. Then, on Valentine’s night, Saffyre Maddox disappears—and the last person to see her alive is Owen Pick.

With evocative, vivid, and unputdownable prose and plenty of disturbing twists and turns, Jewell’s latest thriller is another “haunting, atmospheric, stay-up-way-too-late read” (Megan Miranda, New York Times bestselling author).

Review:

I was so excited to see a new Lisa Jewel book! I have read her last five books and couldn't wait for the next one. Invisible Girl does not disappoint! Suspense that'll keep you guessing.

This book was hard to put down. Meet Saffyre Maddox, ex patient of Roan Fours. Why is she sneaking around following Roan? Who is Own Pick? Is he just some creepy loner in the neighborhood or could he be the one out assaulting women? Is the Fours marriage a happy one?

Jewel had me feeling terrible for Owen Pick. Nerdy, virgin loner living with his aunt that doesn't want him in her living space. He is confined to his cold bedroom alone. Now he's being accused of sexual harassment from two of his female students, and put on suspension while the school investigates.

Saffyre Maddox seems to be up to no good following her ex psychiatrist around. Hiding out in an abandoned lot by the Fours house. With these characters you would think you would know right away who is behind the assaults happening in the area to young women. Jewel will take you on a ride you were not expecting. Saffyre definitely has some secrets that I was waiting for throughout the story. What's her deal?

I always find myself trying to figure out things before they happen in Jewel's books but usually I am off. I loved all the thrilling suspense that kept me wanting to read more. I just wanted to know who was behind what and if certain characters would be caught. So many secrets. The characters are so well developed and easy to like.

I give this book a 5 out of 5 stars and I can't wait for Jewel's next novel!

Review:

This one was good but not favourite. I enjoy the authors writing style and the plot but I wasn't really a fan of any of the characters. I just didn't feel like the characters came to life for me and they weren't really likable characters. It is definitely a psychological thriller with some unexpected twists. I did find about three quarters through I had guessed where the story was heading. It did still keep me wondering if I would be right about it.  I give this book a 3 stars just because it didn't hold me throughout the whole journey. I have read a few of Mary Kubica's books and do look forward to the next one.

Review:

I was lucky to get my hands on an early review copy. I started this book at bedtime and had a hard time to put it down but I knew I had to get up in the morning. I really do think I could have read this book in one sitting. This is definitely a YA with the main character Cass a hard one to really like. Cass has been bullied most of her life so you would think she would go out of her way to be kind and build true friendships but instead it seems she does a lot of bulling herself - starting rumors about classmates, being mean to others and leading on a boy who has a crush on her. Cass has no problem using Peter to make Gideon jealous, jumping to point fingers at one person or another to be the killer without really stopping to think if it really could be them. Though at one point I seriously thought she was right with one person. I think that the author did a good job at having the reader on the edge of their seat. I couldn't put this book down and read well into my bedtime. I would have liked to see a little more character development to get to feel a little closer to some of the characters. I did think the author did a good job of twists in the plot and the ending I didn't really think was going to unfold that way. I can't wait to see what Chelsea comes up with for her next book. A great debut!

I give this book a 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Review:

Good Girls Lie was crazy amazing. I was hooked and enjoyed every minute of this story. So much so I was sad to get to the end and not follow the characters anymore. I am still thinking about them a few days after finishing it. Suspense, teenage/college girl drama. What is happening at the all-girls school? I was actually worried at the end, would it end how I think it will?!? Definitely a psychological thriller. The author did a great job with the character building and had me hanging on to every word. This story flowed perfectly.

I give this book a 5 out of 5 and can't wait to read more from J.T Ellison.

About the Author:

I would like to write a novel that every, single person loves, but not even J.K. Rowling could do that. Instead, I try to write stories that pull on people's emotions. I believe that sadness is the most powerful emotion, and swirled with regret the two become a dominating force. I love villains. Three of my favorites are Mother Gothel, Gaston and the Evil Queen who all suffered from a pretty wicked case of vanity (like me). I like to make these personality types the center of my stories. I love rain, Coke, Starbucks and sarcasm. I hate bad adjectives and the word "smolder". If you read my book-I love you. If you hate my book-I still love you, but please don't be mean to me; I'm half badass, half cry baby.

Review:

This is the first time I have read one of Tarryn Fisher's novels. I was definitely not disappointed! This book left me needing time to sort everything out in my own head. If all of Fisher's novels are like this I need to read them ALL! This is not a romance at all. This is a psychological mind blowing thriller. Tarryn definitely takes reader's on a crazy roller coaster. These characters will have you roped in and wondering who has it right. It is so hard not to give anything away! To be honest I didn't see that end coming and I really should have. I am just too excited about this book. It was fantastic! I miss Thursday already, I want more. Just know if (and you really should) pick up this book you will love it! I didn't find any of it slow moving but I did see a few reviewers mention it. I was wishing I could have sat and devoured the whole book at once.

I give this a huge 5 out of 5 stars!

Review:

A plane crash in the Mountains called the Grey Sisters kills everyone but one person. D and Spider lost siblings on that flight and D needs closer by visiting the crash site.

This book in set in out West in Canada and written by a Canadian author! I love reading Canadian books (as I am Canadian). The author jumps into the story from Kat's perspective as the plane is in the air and about to have trouble. The rest of the book is written in D, Ariel, and a little of Min's voice. This was a twisted plot where a cult lives high in the mountains. Reminds me of a good movie storyline. I honestly think it would make a better movie than a book. I liked Ariel's chapters better as I found it a little more fast paced, twisted and suspenseful. There was more of a plot going on.

Overall? I did enjoy this book but I don't think I will find myself rereading it any time soon. It is a quick, easy read and worth a read. I give this 3 out of 5 stars. I do think the plot could have been thicker with the 3 friends visiting the crash site or maybe less about them and more about Avalon community in the mountains. I found that to be more interesting and would have loved it if the author went further in depth with that storyline.

Review:

I read this book closer to the book release date but now realized I never wrote a review. I was really excited to read this novel as I love Law Crime/Thrillers and it was set in my home country Canada. What more could one ask for? I was a little disappointed with the plot as some parts were hard to wrap my head around mainly Jully's former client Damon. I did love the setting of Vancouver Canada and the author knows her way around a court house. I would recommend this book as it was a good read from a debut author. I look forward to reading more in the future from Beverly McLachlin as I believe her books will keep getting better.

I give this book a 3.5 stars out of 5.

Review:

The main character, Rowan grew up around death being the undertaker's daughter but now even worse she has a serial killer after her. Rowan has lost her twin sister, her mother when she was 12 years old and more recently her father. How many secrets did her parents have never tell her about? She is trying to figure out what the real truth is all the while staying one step ahead of the killer, Julian. This is book #2 in The Undertaker's Daughter series but I was able to read it as a stand alone. I am finding myself so intrigued that I want to go back and read the first book.  The author did a great job of weaving the characters together and making it a real page turner. I love how this was really more a crime, suspense book with a hint of a blossoming romance between Rowan and Billy (the police of chief and life long friend). So many murders and are they all connected? I couldn't put this book down and I didn't want it to end. I can't wait for the next book to release! I am also very much interested in reading other series by Debra Webb in the future.

I give this book 5 out of 5 stars!
Excerpt from The Lies We Tell by Debra Webb

One

Franklin County Jail, Winchester, Tennessee Thursday, October 24, 11:55 a.m.

Herman Carter looked old. So very old.

The past five months in jail awaiting trial had taken a toll on the seventy-one-year-old man. He’d lost weight, and his gray hair lacked its usual sheen. But it was his eyes that told the real story. Dull, list-less, resigned.

Rowan DuPont felt no sympathy.

Renewed indignation tightened her lips. This man—a man she had known and trusted her entire life—had deceived her. He had taken advantage of her father…and betrayed so many people. For no other rea-son than greed. He could toss out his excuses about his wife’s illness, but the truth was he had hurt people, using Rowan’s family and the funeral home that had belonged to her family for 150 years.

He deserved a far heavier punishment than she imagined the court system would eventually dole out. Eventually being the key word. The trial wasn’t scheduled to begin for another three months. The wheels of justice indeed moved slowly.

“Did you get my letters?” His voice sounded rusty, as if he rarely found a reason to use it.

“One every week,” Rowan said, her voice stiff, no matter that she had repeatedly attempted to relax. No matter that she did not want to be here, this meeting was necessary. Furthermore, it was essential that she proceed with caution where her personal feelings were concerned. She needed him cooperative. Revealing her utter disdain would not aid toward that end.

Herman had written to her every week since his ar-rest. Until yesterday, she had not opened a single one of his letters. She had felt no desire to read anything he had to say. He could not be trusted in any capacity. Yet, unfortunately, he was the one person still living who was well versed in her family’s history. He and her father had been best friends their whole lives.

With her father dead going on a year now, Herman was the only person who might be able to help her.

For five months she had attempted to dissect her mother’s journals. She had searched the funeral home, as well as the living quarters, from top to bottom. One by one she had questioned neighbors, business asso-ciates and anyone else who had known her parents. She had learned nothing useful toward her goal of uncovering the facts surrounding the deaths of her sister and her mother.

Perhaps the truth had died with her father.

Rowan still struggled with the loss of her father. The idea that he might have lied to her made adjust-ing to this new reality all the more difficult. A part of her refused to believe he had lied, despite the rumors and innuendos she had encountered. The trouble was, she had to know for certain. Herman Carter, the man who had stolen body parts from the dead to sell on the black market, was the sole person on this planet who might be able to help her find the answers she sought. However hard she had searched to find the facts some other way, ultimately, she had realized this was her only choice.

He was her final hope. The thought of living with the uncertainty was something she was not prepared to do. Too much hinged on knowing the whole truth.

“Is that why you’re here after all this time?” Herman asked, a spark of hope lighting his dark eyes.

“Did my words persuade you to forgive me?”

Rowan clenched her jaw long enough to restrain the urge to laugh in the man’s face. Forgive him?

Not in this lifetime. All those weeks and months she had ignored his attempts at communicating. She had fully expected to continue on that course. Then, the day before yesterday she had hit a wall, run out of viable options for finding answers. With no other alternative, she reluctantly began to open the letters and read each one, twice. They told her nothing useful. Rather, his words had repeatedly expressed how deeply sorry he was and how desperately he wanted her forgiveness.

Forgiveness was the one thing she could not give him. Beneath the table that separated them, her right knee started to bounce. She braced against the out-ward display of her emotions and said what needed to be said. “No.”

The optimistic gleam that had appeared in his eyes died an abrupt death. “Then why are you here?”

“I’m here for information.” Rowan squared her shoulders and stared straight into his defeated gaze.

“You owe me the truth, Herman. The whole truth.”

He shook his head, turned up his shackled hands. “I’ve told you and the police everything I did. I don’t know what else I can do.”

If only the issue were so simple. “I don’t need the truth about what you did, Herman. We know what you did.”

His shoulders drooped. “I don’t understand what you’re saying, Ro. I did bad things—but never at Du-Pont. Never. It was Woody who crossed that line, not me. I wouldn’t have done that to Edward. And it only happened once. Even if Woody hadn’t ended up dead, I guarantee you he wouldn’t have done that again.”

Really? She was supposed to be grateful he did his stealing from the dead at another funeral home?
Un-believable.

Focus, Ro.

Sticking with her agenda was imperative. The chief of police had allowed her this extended visit with Her-man for that specific purpose. She wasn’t allowed to discuss the ongoing criminal case with Herman—not that she had any desire to do so. The chief—her long-time friend, William “Billy” Brannigan—had allowed her to use this interview room rather than the usual vis-itation area with the metal bars and Plexiglas. Today could very well be her one chance to speak with Herman in this sort of setting. The elderly man was likely going away for the rest of his life.

Review:

This is a great novel. I don't usually read stories set back in time or history, I am trying to read more. This one put me through one heck of a roller coaster with my emotions. There really should be a trigger warning with this one. If you have been in a relationship with a narcissist, emotional abuser, controller you may have a tough time reading it. That being said I would sometimes find myself in tears and other times the hatred would be about to boil over. I just kept on reading as I needed to know what was going to happen to Silja and Ruby. The story did have a slow start but once you get into it you will feel like you are right there with the characters. It isn't an action packed novel but a literary fiction.

I absolutely loved how the author would flip back and forth from characters (Silja, Ruby and Angie) also going back in time to have the reader learn about Silja and Henry's relationship. Suspense dripped from the pages as I read on. Would Henry give Silja what see wanted? What really happened to Henry and where did Silja go? Did Ruby have anything to do with this? You will need to read this novel if you love physiological thrillers. It was a great literary fiction that I would totally read again. I can't wait to read more from Cynthia Swanson. The novel was beautifully pieced together.

I give this book a 5 out of 5 stars.

Where I Lost Her by T. Greenwood ~ Book Review

Book Description:

In her page-turning new novel, T. Greenwood follows one woman's journey through heartbreak and loss to courage and resolve, as she searches for the truth about a missing child.

Eight years ago, Tess and Jake were considered a power couple of the New York publishing world--happy, in love, planning a family. Failed fertility treatments and a heartbreaking attempt at adoption have fractured their marriage and left Tess edgy and adrift. A visit to friends in rural Vermont throws Tess's world into further chaos when she sees a young, half-dressed child in the middle of the road, who then runs into the woods like a frightened deer.

The entire town begins searching for the little girl. But there are no sightings, no other witnesses, no reports of missing children. As local police and Jake point out, Tess's imagination has played her false before. And yet Tess is compelled to keep looking, not only to save the little girl she can't forget but to salvage her broken heart as well.

Blending her trademark lyrical prose with a superbly crafted and suspenseful narrative, Where I Lost Her is a gripping, haunting novel from a remarkable storyteller.

Review:

T. Greenwood jumps right into the story with this book called Where I lost her. We follow Tess as she spots a little girl who was all alone late at night on the back road near where Tess is visiting her friends. I did find the first half of the book a little slow for my liking but it did pick up and I was really interested in finding out if what Tess saw was true or is she was having a mental breakdown. The author does a great job weaving in back history of Tess and Jake keeping us on our toes wondering if the stress of not having a child of their own has spun this tale. I was hooked. Gripping to the story and wondering what was truly happening, who is actually involved and did what and if they would really find this little girl in time.

I give this book a 3.5 out of 5 just because I found that the first half was slow but I do look forward to reading more from this author.

Review:

Wicked Charm hooked me into the story right from the very first chapter! A great YA romantic thriller. It has the lure with the swamp, a few murders of girls that had connections to the tall dark and "evil" boy next door. I love the little relationship that develops between Willow and Beau. At first I wasn't too sure about Beau, I mean there seemed to be something just not good about the boy. Once the story starts to really unfold we learn more about Beau's past and about his family. Willow is very determined and head strong, she has set her eyes on Beau and nothing will stop her from getting to know the real Beau. She won't take others rumors or bad mouthing before learning the truth herself.

The author goes back and forth between the two main characters POV with each chapter. It is very easy to follow along and I found that the author did a great job on setting the scene and also developing each character keeping the reader guessing who could really be behind the murders in this small town. I did find that the story was more romance than thriller for myself. I found that the murders were just second to the relationship between Willow and Beau. It was a great, fast YA read. I couldn't put it down, I am sure I could have read it in one sitting if life didn't get in the way.

I look forward to reading more from Amber Hart. I give this book a 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Review:

I liked this book but I wasn't blown away with it. I think I was hoping it would be more adult than YA-Teen. I found myself thinking that the main character Poppy was very immature for her age and some of the things she did showed this. For the most part this novel the story flowed well expect for a few parts where I struggled to stay reading. I did like how it touched on a few of today's topics that kids are dealing with - suicide, depression and the LGBTQ community. Using blog posts and comments online to trace India's final days alive, who she was with and what must have been going through her mind. The characters in this story were well developed and had you trying to figure out who has what secrets and what really did happen to India.

I feel I should give this book a 3.5 out of 5 stars as I don't think I would read it again but I would recommend it to others to read.

Review:

Looking for a suspenseful thriller to keep you on your toes? This one was about a doll house that the main characters father made them when they were little. Corinne's mom doesn't know what happened to it and everywhere Corinne turns a piece from the house keeps turning up out of no where. Corinne is stressed with trying to become pregnant and when she finds these miniature doll house toys she thinks someone is in the apartment. Her boyfriend seems to think it is just the stress of trying to get pregnant until stuff really starts to get strange. I found the story was a little slow moving until we get to the end and it really picks up. The author breaks the story up by changing characters each chapter. Also throughout the story we read about a character and her mother back then. We don't know who they are or why they are even in the book until everything comes together at the end. The story unfolds quickly and then everything makes sense.

I would give this book a 3 out of 5 stars. I enjoyed it but I don't think I would read it again.

Review:

I was super excited to read this book. From the synopsis I figured I would devour this book from beginning to end. In the end I felt I was let down. I did enjoy this book but I can only give it a 3 or 3.5 star rating as I found once I was just over half way through the story line to me slowed down and got repetitive.

Seeing evil in eyes of strangers would be horrifying but to be wrapped up in a run for your own life and others because these evil individuals can identify you through your eyes is even scarier. This book starts off fast, not wasting anytime on getting into the story and having it unfold quickly. There are some pretty gruesome spots that I read through quickly but all in all I liked this book because it was different than the average suspense thrillers I have been reading lately. I would have to say it is a bit paranormal like. Take a chance on it, you might just love it.

Review:

I enjoy reading horror, psychological and erotica books but usually they are not all rolled into one like Bled. This book is raw, raw, raw. It gets its teeth into you from the first couple pages and hooks you along until you come to the end. This book is not my typical read but I was very interested in seeing how the novel would unfold. I knew from the beginning that it isn't your average horror or erotica novel, it does contain explicit sexual scenes. That in mind I jump in with both feet and an open mind.

I give this book a 4 out of 5 stars. Why? Because I found it hooked my attention right away, kept me picking back up the book until I was finished. I love the writing style of Slain and was fascinated with the story he was able to tell. Never would I have thought Geocaching would be so dangerous.

Cassie is  a tough girl, she won't take any crap from anyone especially not her boyfriend, who really needs emotional help and some anger management. She even has some great kicka#$ moves that will get her out of trouble. This book does have abuse emotionally and physically, so there were times that I couldn't wait to get through a certain part. All in all I think Slain did a great job on his debut novel and I can't wait to read more by him.

The Laws of Nature: A Collection of Short Stories of Horror, Anxiety, Tragedy and Loss by Ashley Franz Holzmann, Narrated by Mr. Creepy Pasta ~ Audiobook Review

Book Description:

There is a dark side to human nature that neither can be wished away nor completely mitigated. Ashley Holzmann details just several of these "Laws of Nature" before taking his readers on a journey through the bizarre, the terrifying, and, ultimately, the disturbingly real truths that underlie much of modern American life.

Ashley makes his debut into the horror genre with "The Stump," a story about an afternoon trot through the woods that quickly becomes a blood bath--and, much as it does for that story's creature, the scent of fear will only lure veteran horror readers further through the forest. A teenager's vanity will likely cause his town to be consumed by a roaming swarm of insects that burst forth from his acne-riddled skin in "White Heads;" entire populations vanish into the void of the Alaskan tundra in "Glass Houses;" and superiority takes the form of a murdering, sadistic woman in "Lady Macbeth."

But Ashley's best retellings focus less on gore and adrenaline and instead take human psychology as their medium, as demonstrated in "Plastic Glasses," where readers are brought into a world of disturbing personality and mental disorders. Ashley's work abounds with stories in this vein, stories which grab a hold of a common failing--such as marital friction in "Hush," or American male frustration in "Orpheus's Lot"--and take it to an extreme that is nevertheless not inconceivable for most people.

Coming from the mind of a man who has experienced more than his fair share of humanity, "The Laws of Nature" is, at its finest, a description of universal emotions of loss, nostalgia, anxiety, and soul-penetrating terror. Ashley's stories elicit empathy from his readers and draw them into worlds where they both acknowledge and cuddle with their fears and which leave them, ultimately, more human.

Narrator: Mr. Creepy Pasta  YouTube | Website |

Review: This review was originally posted on Audiobookreviewer.com

This is a novel of short stories of horror, mental illness, trauma and more. A few of these stories are very unbelievable - The Stump especially but it is more of a horror story. The rest of them are more believable and very creepy. One story that really got to me was Clarissa, the story is set out as an "writer" recording his story about meeting a killer named Clarissa and how she went about killing her victims. The narrator does a great job pulling the listening into this story, making you fell like he is speaking to you. At the end of it the "writer" ask how is your writing going Jennifer and a few other questions. Because I am a Jennifer and was totally engrossed into this story I was totally thrown off and freaked out. It was likely my favourite story. I also enjoyed the one about a truck driver explaining about how he drives truck and the safety that he has to deal with all the time, the other drivers out on the road and accidents. Another story is about a man who talks about losing his son to SIDs and hearing the baby still crying at night on the baby monitor, as the reader I felt he was just going through his grieving but in the end it isn't what you would expect.  If you enjoy creepy stories this is a great compilation that you should check out.

The narrator, Mr. Creepy Pasta, is amazing, he engages the readers and makes you feel like he is just talking to you. He really gets into the stories and "acts" them out verses reading them. There is music playing in the background for most of it but it really adds to the stories and makes things seem creepier. Mr. Creepy Pasta is an amazing voice for horror stories. I really enjoyed his narration so much that I looked him up on YouTube and have listened to more horror stories on his channel.

I give this book a 5 out of 5 stars. I will look for more from this author and the narrator.
