Keep Off the Grass by Karan Bajaj ~ Book Review

Book Description:

What do you do when you are a twenty-five-year-old Yale graduate making half-a-million dollars a year as a hotshot investment banker on Wall Street?

You bust your ass and become a millionaire by thirty, of course.
Not if you are Samrat Ratan, born in the USA to immigrant Indian parents; you quit and enrol in business school in India instead.

Samrat's rollercoaster journey begins at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Bangalore, where he spends his time getting high on marijuana while his grades – and self-confidence – plummet. Soon, Samrat's quest for identity turns increasingly bizarre as it takes him places he hadn't planned on visiting – prison, for example – and makes him do things he hadn't banked on doing: 'meditating' stoned with a sexy Danish hippie in the Himalayas, hanging out with a cannibal on the banks of the Ganga, and peddling soap to the formidable Raja Bhaiya in Benares.

Does Samrat – Yale valedictorian, investment banker, convict, pothead – survive his fall from grace?

Review:

This was a totally different read for myself. I am not into business or Wall Street but I was really into this book. It really was a new story line for myself, with some ganja, sex and foul language. I have been fascinated by stories taking place in India lately and have enjoyed both books I have read by Karan Bajaj. This is a book about Samrat who is wanting to find out more about himself by venturing to India where his parents left to set up a life in the US. Samrat decides to head off to India on a whim to take courses at a business school where he meets some very interesting new friends. Smoking pot, drinking and not sleeping is what Samrat and his two friends do during the two year program. I love how his one friend can smoke up all the time, skip classes and still ace everything. This journey takes so many turns and keeps you glued to the pages to see what else can possibly happen. Will Samrat find what he is looking for or will he float through two years in India lost. I really enjoyed the characters in this book and found the story line to have a steady flow to it. I'll admit to having a ah ha moment when I figured out the play on words with the title but closer to the end there is another ooh maybe that is what the author means. The story is told by Samrat as a memory of his journey.

If you are looking for something different than the normal mystery, fantasy or contemporary romance this is a fun read about college life in India while just trying to find oneself and being truly happy.

I give this book a 4 out of 5 stars.

An excerpt:

The first police car screamed into the lot, skidding to a halt so close to the front of the truck that it was a miracle it hadn't hit. They were caught. Madison glanced at Scott for instructions, but his eyes were closed and he was muttering something under his breath – casting a spell.

Two uniformed officers spilled from their car, but they didn't come towards them. Instead, they went for Mick and his dad, cutting them off before they could pile into a rusty Toyota. Then another squad car screamed into the lot, ejecting two more officers who went into the building.

Go,” Scott murmured.

She barely heard him, but she obeyed. She put the truck in reverse, carefully backed away from the police car trying to kiss their bumper, then threw the truck into drive and peeled away. Madison kept glancing at the mirrors, even though the angles were wrong, looking behind them for the cars that would surely give chase. They didn't. The police officers acted as if they couldn't even see them.

It wasn't just the policemen who couldn't see them, as Madison discovered when she pulled into traffic. She screamed and slammed on the brakes, barely missing a collision when a car changed lines directly into their side.

Are we invisible?” Madison asked.

My review:

I've had the pleasure of reading all of Christine's past books, and when I was offered the opportunity to read Madison's song; a spinoff of the original Cassie Scot series, I didn't hesitate and couldn't wait to begin.
I was warned by Christine this story would be far darker than the Cassie Scot series, and with a prologue like the one written, I knew I was in for a whole different read than her other novels had been.

This is a stand alone novel, and when history from the past novel is mentioned, enough back story is briefly noted you're not lost if you're new to Christine's writing.

Madison is a song bird, meaning she possess her magic through song, she can make people feel, and do all through using her voice. Scott, well he's an alpha werewolf who has a lot of responsibility. He's young and powerful, before being bitten he was an apprentice sorcerer with much magic, this comes in handy when his need to fight evil, however he himself is nothing but evil once a month during the full moon, his mind leaves when his wolf transforms.

It's not until Madison receives a frightening call from her adoptive brother Clinton at 2am, he's been bitten by a werewolf and the only one who can help her find him is Scott...

They both have an undeniable attraction to one another, but Scott is dangerous in more ways than one, he knows she knows it. She's seen him transform, she's seen his wolf do unspeakable things, things that no human should ever see. She knows first hand how dangerous he is, but he's saved her life, and along this journey he protects it, and saves it more times again, only making her feel more love for the man, and less fear of the wolf.

Her fear of Scott still lingers strong, she only pushes through her fear because the fear of her brother's fate is far more obscure. Against Scott's better judgement and her refusal to stay home they travel across state lines in a search to find her newly bitten brother before his first transition.

Along the journey Madison finds her true strength in her magic, Scott teaching her that the only thing standing in her way of true magic is her confidence. When she finds her confidence she becomes far stronger in her magic than she ever thought possible.

Soon, Madison finds herself being kidnapped once again by a powerful sorcerer who conducts lab experiments on paranormal creatures, she is alone and hopeless until once again her life's survival is in one man's hands, Scott.

Another captivating novel, flawlessly written, thank you Christine.

The Priest Whisperer by Stefan Emunds ~ Book Review

Book Description:

The Priest Whisperer is an inspiring novelette series describing the life of George Mykal Ferluci, who lives his life quietly in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. But this is about to change. One sunny afternoon George experiences an awe-inspiring vision of another dimension, causing him to doubt his common perception and world view. As he prays with all his heart to understand what happened, he enters into a visionary meditation, sliding deeper and deeper into the realms of his thoughts and feelings. There, he encounters something even more bizarre than his first vision: a voice that entangles him into an odd conversation. And so begins a life-changing, spiritual journey as the voice escorts George to meet his true self face-to-face and teaches him the secret riches of Christianity. Often witty and with inspiring anecdotes, the voice slowly dilutes George’s common sense and opens his mind to receive Jesus Christ’s long lost, esoteric memorandum: the mystery of God Child and people’s inevitable joyful destiny. As the voice elaborates the ancient, miraculous truth of mankind deeply buried in the Bible, a premonition of a modern, contemporary Christianity manifests and how it could advance beyond mere religion, allowing spiritual awakening and personal growth.

It’s a bit hard to put a label at the Priest Whisperer, since it conveys ancient mysteries in a contemporary setting. In order to do so, it’s style embraced various genres, like religious & inspirational fiction, visionary fiction, new age Spirituality, and magical realism novels.

About the Author:

Stefan Emunds loves to write visionary fiction, but also non-fiction, screenplays, and poems when time allows. Stefan was born in Germany and enjoyed two years backpacking in Australia, New Zealand, and South-East Asia in his early twenties.

For almost three decades, Stefan has pursued a spiritual career at B.O.T.A., a modern mystery school specialized on Tarot, Qabalah, Gematria, esoteric Astrology, and Alchemy.

After getting married, Stefan chose a necessity-career in the telecommunication industry. Since then, he has worked as a business development manager in Europe, Middle East, and in Asia.

2012 Stefan finally managed to kick-start a hobby career as a writer. Around the same time, he stumbled upon the mechanical translation of the Genesis authored by Jeff Benner. He almost couldn’t recognize the Bible. He felt like a literary archeologist when he dived into the Bible's unexpected mysterious realm. This inspired him to author the God Child tetralogy, deliberately written with the purpose of bridging the gap between religion and spirituality.

Part 1 of the God Child tetralogy, The Grand Awakening, has already been published, Part 2, The Dragonslayer, will be released early 2015.

At the moment, Stefan lives in the Philippine. When he’s not writing, he plays with his 5-year-old son, joins him in his Taekwando training, or takes him for a trip to the beach.

Review:

I have found myself reading more inspirational/religious books lately as I have been on a journey over the past year to find myself and find peace within. This little short story touches that question of Who am I? Have we looked at ourselves or should I say within ourselves to see who we really are? Instead of what we do. I am a mother, a daughter, a support worker, a reader, a blogger but really who am I? These are just things I do but it isn't who I am. I am God's Child.

George is a Priest who is wondering - "Who am I?". The voice within helps George through this dilemma through a vision & meditation. George digs deeper within himself to find out who he really is. This is a fresh story that is a quick and thought provoking read. By the end of this story I wanted to find out more about George and his journey. I can't wait to read part two.

I give this short story a 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Review:

I really enjoyed this little YA series on Audiobook. It was a fun listen to during my commute to work. It is made up of 3 short novellas that are geared to preteen/teen girls. The narrator was pretty good and easy to follow along with. There was one character in the first book that was super annoying and the narrator even gave this character that high pitched whinny voice that I can't stand. It was great even though she was hard to handle. haha. The books are clean romance YA/teen type where the main characters are starting to date/have crushes. High school life/drama, first crushes. The first book I have to say would be my favorite of them all as the story is fun with Cam really wanting to date Nick but playing girlfriend to Josh to see if Nick would want Cam. It was super cliche but very cute. I also loved the end.

Book two my next favorite as Summer falls for Nick and we find out more about Nick and what really happened between him and Gina. The books do have an ARC so you would have to read them to know the whole story line. They have characters that are brought into the next. The characters could be more developed but the author does a good job as these are novellas vs longer novels.

I do wish that the audiobook would tell you when you are starting the next book but it just gives a little break between chapters and books. I would listen to another audiobook by this narrator and I would read more from Dana Burkey.

I give this series a 3.5 out of 5 stars as it is a great younger teen series.

With this new take on the classic sing-along song, kids can interact with their favorite Little Blue Truck and beep his horn while they visit with all his farm animal friends. Colorful illustrations, bouncy rhyme, and a cuddly truck with built-in squeaker make this a perfect interactive choice for play time and story time.

Our review:

My young family sure did enjoy this interactive read along book. Each page has a very sing-along chime to 'if you're happy and you know it, clap your hands'.
My two year old son most enjoyed his chance to beep-along, and point out the many farm animals Little Blue Truck passed along on his drive.
My four year old also enjoyed her chance to beep along.

Overall, if I were to suggest this book to families with young children I certainly would. This adorable read gets two thumbs up from all of us!  I would appropriate this book for a child 18m-3yr, when they're most interested to sit and participate with a short story.

Another School Year Started!

I know it has been very quiet on here the last few days but it has been very crazy busy with the kids last week of summer holidays and back to school prep. This year we decided to go into another city and try out a different mall to pick up the kids stuff. We didn't do too bad from some great finds that they kids couldn't wait to use. I know remember why I don't shop too early for back to school things as they want to wear them right away!

This year my two kids are in grades 3 and 4! I can't believe how quickly the time has been flying. It is funny how sometimes it just hits you when you are looking at them. Like the other day my daughter was getting ready for dinner and I realized how tall she has gotten this summer or when we picked out new school shoes for my son and he and I fit almost the same size! Yikes!

This year both of the kids want to work on their own blogs and do reviews for books, movies and other fun items that they like. Right now they have been reviewing on here. Abby has been learning to sew and will have a post coming up from her summer fun with Jane Bull Doll.

Here is a picture of their first day back to school! Both of them were really excited to get back to school and see their friends and teachers. We are very fortunate that both our kids love school and enjoy reading.

I hope everyone else had a fabulous back to school day!

About the Author:

Joel Osteen is an American best-selling author and the senior pastor of Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas. His ministry reaches over seven million broadcast media viewers weekly in over 100 nations around the world.

Joel, the son of John Osteen, a highly respected minister of the Gospel and the founder of Lakewood Church, attended Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma where he studied radio and television communications. In 1982, Joel returned to Houston and founded Lakewood's television ministry where he produced John Osteen's televised sermons for 17 years until January 1999 when his father passed away suddenly from a heart attack.

For many years, John Osteen encouraged Joel to preach, but he always declined preferring to work behind the scenes. But, in early 1999 Joel felt compelled to accept his father's invitation and he preached his first sermon on January 17th of that year. Little did anyone know that would be the last Sunday of John Osteen's life. Two weeks later, Joel began preaching and later that year was installed as the new Senior Pastor of Lakewood Church.

Review:

I have recently listened to Joel Osteen on one of his podcasts and I have a friend who absolutely loves him so I thought I would give one of his books a go. I am not very religious or maybe it was just a few bad times as a child that I fell out of faith. As of recent (more or less when I started my health & fitness journey) I have decided I need to be more mindful and more spiritual.

This book is a great one to start with. Joel is very kind and has a way of making his books easy to read and enjoy. Sometimes self help books can be hard to get into and stay reading, this one is totally different. I really enjoyed reading it and looked forward to spending some time with Joel. I really like how positive Joel is and how he uses stories and metaphors to help you understand what he is telling you to do.  I don't really remember a lot from the Bible but it is nice that Joel includes Scriptures that you can also look up and read more about.

Take away from this book has been great! It is weird to say but as I worked my way through this book I found myself feeling lighter and really thinking about ways I can improve my life and attitude. Over the last few years I have decided to rid myself of negativity especially people that were trying to rent space in my head. I also learned a great deal about the toxic mind and removing the toxic thoughts from our minds. I have really decided life is what we make it. I will be working on becoming even more positive even during the tough times and looking at what is ahead. God has a way of working things out and He has a plan for each and everyone of us.

Joel talks about looking for the positive and not be a faultfinder. I know I need to work on this. In the past I could easily be dragged down with negative thoughts and comments. I will work on finding the positives in every situation and everyone around me. One story Joel talks about is a gentleman that went to his pastor and said he had nothing to go on for and this pastor said that he was sorry to hear that his wife passed away. The man said no my wife is healthy and alive. The pastor wrote down healthy wife. He preceded to say sorry about the job loss and the man said no I have my job. Down that went into the asset section of the paper. Makes us really think about things that we should be grateful for even if there are bad times.

I will be reading more from Joel Osteen in the very near future as I really enjoyed this one.

I give this book a 5 out of 5 stars.

I like this book because its based on the tv series . I found this book appropriate for level 4 reading as I didn't have difficulties reading it but it had some hard names. My favourite part was when Ventress the bad guy and  Ahsoka and Luminara had a fight it was intense because Luminara was almost destroyed because she fell off a ledge!

My favourite character is Ahsoka because she save Luminaras life. I really enjoyed the book because of the battles.

I give the book 4 stars.

Author's Bio:

A 38 year old native of Los Angeles, Mr. Smith began his writing career after getting news that he would soon become an uncle. Wanting to create stories and characters for his expected niece, he created the children’s book series “Sock n Boots Adventures.” The two characters (three year old Sock and five year old Boots) began to make names for themselves, generating downloads in countries around the world.

When asked about his motivation to tackle the subject of bullying in a 108,000 word novel Smith said, “One day I came across a story in the news about a young girl that jumped in front of a subway train after weeks of bullying. As I investigated further, I was shocked at the number of similar stories I encountered. Bullycide, the news was calling it. I thought, wow, what if these young people had been shown that the pain of bullying can be handled without hurting themselves or someone else.”

Ultimately it was thoughts of his now four nieces and three nephews dealing with bullying as they get older that weighed heavily on the decision for Smith to write the story about bullying. “I recognize that the characters and situations in the book may not represent every bullying situation and that realistically the book won’t change the world, but I do sincerely hope that it sends a subtle message about there being life after bullying. We’ll just have to see how the public receives it,” Smith said.

A lover of mystery and espionage stories, Smith is a fan of everything James Bond. A favorite scenario is to see a character in an impossible situation get out of it at the last second or have the odds against them and see he or she turn the tables. Acting on the love of espionage and mystery, Smith has a new novel in the works centering on a James Bond-type character of his own creation.

Review:

This novel was wonderfully put together. It touches a tough subject of bullying and does a really good job of grabbing the reader emotionally and tying them to the characters. The story is not just straight forward you will learn quickly there are many characters and story lines but in the end they are all connected together somehow through being bullied or being the bad guys. Character development was spot on for myself as I felt like I could play the story very well in my mind and picture each character as they should be. This I find lacking in some novels. I felt a mix of emotions throughout but couldn't put this book down. I literately walked around with this book in my hands for a few days so I could read every spare minute I had. That to me is a good sign that this is a great novel especially as the kids are home on vacation and I was able to quickly devour this book.

The topic of Bullying is very hard to read as I have been a victim of it back in middle school and then my son went through it in jr. kindergarten. This book is about teens and bullying and is very tough read as I can't even imagine living in this day and age where bullying has taken a huge leap from name calling and spitting.

I love how the author mixes the story with a money laundering scheme where teens are targeted and asked to sell drugs.  It is really a MOB type of story. The teens that finally do group together and stand up against the bullies are pretty amazing group. I can't wait for book 2!! I am hooked on this series and hope to read more from this author.

I give this book a 5 out of 5 stars! A must read especially for teens that may be having a hard time through school.
