Author Spotlight Saturday ~ Meet Emerald O'Brien

Please welcome Emerald O'Brien to Genuine Jenn! Emerald is a new Canadian author! I am super happy to help with spreading the word about Emerald's new book. Watch for my review on the blog!

Tell us a little bit about your book(s) and yourself.

I write mysteries and I love to read them too. I'm from Ontario, Canada, and I live with my husband and our two beagle pups, Tucker and Wynnie. My debut novel, Darkness Follows is a NA Mystery, and the sequel, Shadows Remain, will be out this fall.

When was your first book published?

Darkness Follows was published May 8th of this year (2014).

Are you currently working on anything?

After finishing Darkness Follows, and it's sequel, Shadows Remain, I've been working on my third novel. It is not related to the others, although it's another mystery. It's also a thriller, and it's yet to be named, but should be out in 2015.

Why did you decide to become an Author?

I've always loved to read and write. It was after I finished my first story that I decided I had to keep writing. I knew that when I was happy with what I created, I wanted to fulfill a bit of a dream of mine, which would be to publish it.

Who and what inspired you to write?

The people in my life who have a talent with writing, and those who love to read have really inspired me. When I discovered I was passionate about those things, I loved to share that passion with family, friends and teachers. It got to the point that I couldn't read without wanting to write.

When you are writing to you like to listen to music? What is on your playlist?

I rarely listen to music when I write, but I do listen to a song just before I start that helps to get me in the mood, whatever that may be. Songs I listened to while writing my first two
books include: The Tragically Hip- Scared, Eli Young Band- Drunk Last Night, Courtyard Hounds- Skyline, The Mark Inside- Can't Take Her With You, BTO- Let It Ride, Pearl Jam- Sirens, Matt Mays- Take It On Faith.

Who is your favorite character in your books?

My favourite character to date would probably be Ryanne Patrick. She's one of the main characters in Darkness Follows. She faced many challenges and she grew a lot as a person.

Do you ever take characteristics or nuances from close friends or family when working on character development and if so has that friend or family member noticed and what was their response to it?

Two of the main characters in Darkness Follows are sisters. I've reflected a bit of my sister and I in them as people, and yes, my sister did notice when she read it. She also noted the many differences, so while there are some similarities, their relationship is different.

What is your favorite book of all time?

It has to be something by Stephen King. Maybe The Long Walk...or The Stand...or Lisey's Story...

Tell us in one sentence why we should read your books.

If you like mysteries, mine are unpredictable; mixed with thrills, crime, and a bit of romance.
