PC Nutrition First: Pet Health Tips

We have recently added to our four legged fur babies. We have added another hound to our family, his name is Buddy. Buddy is 6 years old and has been in a couple homes previous to finding his forever home with us and he girl Molly. Molly is our first hound and is now 3 years old. Both of them are a huge part of our family and we strive to feed them the best foods, vet visits and always looking for health tips to keep our babies happy and healthy for a very long time.

PC Nutrition First wanted to share with Genuine Jenn readers some tips for our furry friends from celebrity dog trainer Harrison Forbes. Not only is he a pet lover, but he has also worked with A-list celebs like Katherine Heigl, Jane Lynch and Joanna Krupa on everything from their pet's behaviour to charity events and animal rights causes. He's a champion of happy, healthy dog and has dedicated his life to our canine companions.

Perfecting Pet Health

Most of us can agree that leading a healthy, fulfilled life is all about balance. We strive to eat nourishing, delicious food, find a form of exercise we enjoy, broaden our horizons through lifelong learning and surround ourselves with people we love and trust. These fundamental building blocks to health and happiness are universally applicable – male, female, young or old; diet, exercise, education and socialization are essential for physical and emotional growth.

What many people don’t realize is that these basic principles apply to our pets too. To help Canadians celebrate their beloved fur babies and educate them about making nutritious choices on their behalf, the President’s Choice® Nutrition First® team has partnered with celebrity dog trainer Harrison Forbes.

Whether you are a new or seasoned dog owner, check out Harrison’s tips for dogs of all ages!

Enjoy First-Class Fuel

The number one contributor to a healthy lifestyle for pets and humans is diet. Like you, your pet should eat nutritious ingredients from all the essential food groups. Brands like President’s Choice® Nutrition First® make it easy for your pet to enjoy the same nutrient-rich foods you do by incorporating high-quality proteins as the main ingredient, along with wholesome grains, fruits and vegetables, pre and probiotics, and omega 3 and 6 fatty acids to nourish your pet’s body.

Get Physical

Most pet behaviour problems are rooted in frustration. Like people, dogs get bored and anxious when they are under-exercised. Being a good pet parent means finding time to play with your dog. Whether focused on mental stimulation (for example, using “smart toys”) or physical exercise (like a walk in the park), interactive activities are crucial for a healthy, well-behaved pup.

Educate Early

When it comes to pet parenting, education is essential – for both of you. To effectively train your dog, you need to invest time in understanding his genetic history so you can design a program that takes advantage of his natural instincts. As your pup learns good conduct, don’t forget to recognize and reward his progress. Treats like President’s Choice® Nutrition First® Grain-Free Biscuits are a nutritious way to reinforce and reward behaviour, help him enjoy the training experience and fuel his body.

Seek Out Puppy Pals

Taking your dog out on the town is key to teaching him how to interact with other people and animals. Just like human babies, dogs needs time to learn what they can and cannot do around others, and exposing them to other pets is a great way to help them establish relationships and learn to enjoy
spending time with furry friends. Plus, having a dog on your arm is a great way to meet like-minded friends!

Stay tuned for more pet information from our friends at
PC Nutrition First.

Keep Your Carpet Healthy & Beautiful With Proper Maintenance

Source: Nolie's Place
Let’s face it: If you’re a carpet owner, there’s quite a bit of work involved with keeping your floor clean and stain free! If you hope to maintain your carpet and keep it healthy for years to come, follow these helpful carpet cleaning tips.

1.  Vacuum on a regular basis. This prevents every day dirt and grime from setting into your carpet.

2.  Consider placing area rugs in higher traffic areas.

3.  Use a specialized cleaner to treat any spills or stains right when they occur. If spills are a normal occurrence for you, consider looking into a stain resistant carpet, such as a Stainmaster carpet. Visit a local Flooring America to find out more about a Stainmaster carpet.

4.  Shampoo your carpets every few months to get rid of soil that could be trapped deep within the fibers.

5.  Apply protective solutions to your carpet that can help reduce the severity of a stain.

6.  If you do spill, blot and try to soak up as much of the liquid on the carpet as you can before it sinks into the carpet pad.

7.  Never pour water on a stain, this will only have the stain sink deeper into the carpet and make the stain worse in the long term.)

Homemade Healthy Hummus

For lunch today we are having squished beans.

That is all hummus is…squished chickpeas with a bit of flavouring. Hummus is easy to make at home and you will know exactly how fresh it is.

Big cans of chickpeas are cheap to buy and easy to store. The other ingredients are olive oil, lemon juice, and peanut butter. You can add seasonings such as chopped garlic, roasted red pepper flakes or curry. Hummus sounds very exotic but it a very quick and healthy meal idea. It packs well for school lunches too.

I drain my chickpeas first and rinse them in a colander. I prefer to do this to reduce the sodium content in my food but if you don’t rinse, that is also okay. I use my stick blender to mush the chickpeas, adding a dribble of water and a drab of olive oil until it is they are blended smoothly. I then add a glop of lemon juice and my seasonings. My final step is to swirl in a tablespoon of peanut butter.

I serve my hummus with torn up chunks of warm pita bread for a simple, low fat lunch. I also like hummus as a dip with crackers or carrot and celery sticks.

The flavour possibilities are endless. Try adding some cooked sweet potato or spinach to give it a little extra veggie punch.

Today's post is a guest post by my friend JoAnne, she is a back to basics homesteader type. She cooks from scratch and eats healthy food that is in season. She can squeeze a penny until it squeaks and has learned to need less, instead of buying more. Watch for more great posts from JoAnne in the near future.

Tips & Tricks from Tommalier David Rocco + Recipe

Do you love tomatoes? Here is a quick, easy and tasty recipe from David Rooco from the Food Network.  Tomatoes form the base of David Rocco’s warming soup, a deliciously simple one-pot meal ready to serve in a little over 20 minutes.

David Rocco’s Tomato and Lentil Soup
Serves: 2-4 people

INGREDIENTS:
  • 4 tbsp (56 ml) extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 garlic cloves, chopped
  • 1 bunch of fresh flat leaf parsley, chopped
  • 2 fresh chili peppers, chopped
  • 2 cans (14 oz/398 ml) tomatoes, such as Hunt’s Original Diced Tomatoes
  • 1 can (19 oz/540 ml) lentils, drained and rinsed
  • Salt, QB
  • Pepper, QB
  • 2 tbsp of tomato paste, such as Hunt’s Original Tomato Paste
  • Water
DIRECTIONS
  • In a saucepan, heat olive oil. Add garlic, parsley and chili peppers and sauté for a few minutes until the garlic has started to turn golden.
  • Pour in the diced tomatoes with the juice right from the tin. With the back of a wooden spoon, break up the tomatoes into little chunks. You can decide the consistency. Then add in the rinsed lentils, salt and pepper. Add tomato paste, and then add water about 1/2 an inch above the lentils.  Bring to a boil, then lower to medium heat and cook for 20 minutes until the soup has thickened.
Hunt’s Tommalier Tip: It's a tradition to make tomato lentil soup with sausage on New Year’s Day as it is supposed to bring good luck for the year ahead.  For a heartier version that does not betray the soup’s cucina povera roots, break up some sausage and let it slightly brown, just before you add in the tomatoes.

5 Tips on Getting Your Creative Juices Flowing

As a blogger we are indeed writer's even if we don't think we are. I for one have felt this way for a while now. I keep telling myself "I'm not a writer, never was, never will be". This is the year I will change my thinking and think of my self as a writer, a writer of my blog Genuine Jenn.

I recently shared some of my tips to stay organized and keeping my creative juices flowing as a blogger with a fellow blogger and decided I would post about it for others to read also. I will split these into two posts. Watch for a post on tips to stay organized when blogging coming soon

5 Tips on getting your creative juices flowing:

Go for a long walk - grab your dog or just your iPod and go for a nice long walk. I find if I go on a nature walk this is a great way to clear my head.

Grab your camera and start snapping - charge up your camera or cell phone and take a walk. This walk could be around your house, or out in nature or just through your town or city. Take photos of anything and everything. When you get home load them up and see what comes to mind. Start writing about what these photos are of or mean to you.

Take some "Me" time - take a nice long warm bath, snuggle up and read a book, go grab a coffee with a friend. These things are great for clearing your mind and once you have a clear mind it is so much easier to write.

Disconnect - I know this one is a hard one for most people these days. I used to find this so hard to do. I have come to learn to take time off from social media sites, email and even my blog. I find taking some time off even a few hours each night or time off during the day keeps me more focused when I go back online and it clears my mind.

Writing Prompts - I have also found writing prompts to be a good way to get my brain thinking again. There are many different sites and blogs that offer tips/prompts. There are also blog sites that offer daily writing prompts like Blog Dare @ Bloggy Moms.

Entertaining Tips and Helpers from Metro

I love to bake especially at the Holidays. I just find that with all the rushing around getting everything ready, throw in work and regular everyday life I don't always have time to bake when we are having guest over or heading to family events. Also it is nice to have something in the freezer or cupboards just in case friends or family stop by over the Holidays at other times. This is where Metro helps out big time! They have a whole line up of Irresistible treats and appetizers to appeal to all your guest.

On New Years eve we usually get the finger foods out for our family dinner. We find the kids look forward to this and love to be able to pick away at this and that. They also just love serving themselves from trays. We usually serve spring rolls, bacon wrapped scallops, shrimp mixes and other little hors d'oeuvres.

This year will are going to add some of the Irresistible indian style delights, Spanish style tapas, Chicken/Pork Satay and maybe even try out some of the Coconut Chicken bites.

Do you have family and friends that like it Sweet and Salty? You can serve them Dark Chocolate Covered Caramels with Sea Salt, Maple Butter - my all time fave!, Dark fruit cake which is my husbands favorite, Chocolate Brownie Lava cookies, or even Panettone Ice cream!
If you look in the back of the basket there is a little head just waiting for some treats for herself!
Here are 10 tips for Holiday Fun from Metro:
  1. Creative serving – Instead of communal bowls of nuts, try a more eye catching and hygienic presentation by putting snacks in clear-glass, narrow-necked decanters. Guests can pour nut and trail mixes themselves, and it looks great, too!
  2. Stagger serving times – If all food is served at the start of the night, guests are likely to gorge and go home early. Keep your party hopping by serving your tasty hors d’oeuvres all night long.
  3. Impress with a signature cocktail - Channel your inner mixologist and offer guests a unique signature cocktail for your holiday party. Be sure to have other non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages to offer alongside this cocktail.
  4. Prep in advance – The ‘day of’ for the party planner is always hectic! Between set up, last minute errands, and wrangling the kids – stress is high. Try prepping what you can a few days before. Things like fruit trays, cheese and cracker platters and Swedish meatballs can all be put together a day or two in advance.
  5. Presentation is everything – When preparing food trays and hors d’oeuvres platters, have fun! Use the Canadian winter landscape as inspiration by placing pinecones and frosted pine needles in your tray display.
  6. Fast and fancy – Limited time? Solicit the help of the frozen food aisle! Metro’s private label line,Irresistibles, offers delicious appetizers perfect for party planners, with selection and creativity covered.
  7. Tidy as you go – No one likes waking up to a mess, by tidying bit by bit during your party, the house will be kept clean for your guests, too!
  8. Set the ambiance – A beautiful candle display can never go wrong at a holiday party
  9. Provide plenty of options – Be sure to provide an assortment of appetizer options at your holiday bash to keep all types of appetites full and happy!
  10. Enjoy yourself – This is your party, too! You’ve worked hard and it’s important to enjoy the environment, interact with your guests and taste your delicious treats!

Guest Post - 5 Important Things You Need To Know Before Buying A House

Today we have a Guest Post by Sophie Banat, MSc graduate in Psychology. Interested in health, beauty and fashion. Tweets @Scramboodle. Please give her a warm welcome!

It's a sign of the times that we are all just that little bit less gung-ho when it comes to spending our
hard-earned cash. This is truer than ever when it comes to buying a house or property. It's one of the
most expensive things we will ever buy and the last thing you want is to discover all too late that you
need to make costly repairs after your purchase. At the very least, finding out in advance could help
you negotiate on price.

Most home buyers do invest in a survey, but if we're honest, most of us only think about the
structural and visible issues. But the systems that sometimes can't be seen but provide the
heartbeat of the home, such as the electrics, water, heating and ventilation, can be, at worst,
dangerous and, at best, costly to fix, if they go wrong. It's not just in the short term; a badly running
system is less energy efficient and therefore hard on the pocket in the long run. So what are some of
the key things to consider before committing to the purchase?

Surveyor

This could be brief check to ensure the building is sound overall, mostly for the purposes of
mortgage valuation, or a more in depth check. Often the surveyor is organised through your
mortgage company if you have one, but you should not be tied to their recommendation. You could
and should shop around for the most experienced or recommended expert.

Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning

These systems are referred to collectively in the business as your HVAC system. This is not usually
included specifically in a survey as the surveyor tends to check only what he can access readily.
Problems here are a pain to fix and a drain on your finances if they're not efficient. It's worth hiring
an expert to check the lot thoroughly, including your HVAC controller. This is a specialist job, so it's
worth hiring an expert to give you peace of mind.

Electrics

Remember how irritating and inconvenient it was the last time you had a power-cut in a storm?
If you can help it, you don't want this system letting you down, as it's pretty difficult to function
without it. How up to date is the control panel, is the system earthed appropriately and can the
system carry the electrical load of any plans you have for the house? That whirlpool bath you
fancy could be enough to tip the electrics over the edge, so it's worth running this through with an
electrician first.

Water

It's nigh on impossible to live without it, but it is something we take for granted. Are your pipes
copper, PVC or something else? Are they corroded? Is your water tank free from debris and
sufficient for your family's needs? Does the emergency stop cock work? All things a qualified
plumber can confirm for you and a little cash invested here can save a lot in the future.

Be In on Everything

This is going to be your home and it's almost certainly your money, so go with the old adage that
knowledge is power. So many of us just leave the surveyor to go about his or her work and simply
and feed back to us. It is ideal for you to be involved and be there to discuss every aspect of any
issue that could be discovered by any one of the checks discussed above. Invest your time and you
will have the peace of mind that there are no surprises lurking around the corner when you move in.
