Author Spotlight Saturday ~ Meet Meka James

Please welcome Meka James to Genuine Jenn this week! Meka is the author of Fiendish A Fairytale Twist. Keep your eyes open for a review on Genuine Jenn.

Tell us a little bit about your book(s) and yourself.

--My book is a very dark take on Beauty and The Beast. It started out as a simple blog story as a challenge to take your favorite fairytale or children’s story and put an adult spin on it. A friend of mine strongly encouraged me to turn it into a book and I did so in her honor.

As for me, there’s not much to tell. I’m a stay at home mom of 4 kids ranging in age from 17-4, one girl (the oldest) and three boys. In my downtime, I play sims and volunteer with an animal rescue group.

When was your first book published?

--Fiendish-A Twisted Fairytale was self-published April 28, 2014.

Are you currently working on anything?

--Yes. I am currently working on a companion book to Fiendish titled Not Broken.

Why did you decide to become an Author?

--Well, I have lots of stuff running around in my head so in my free time while my kids were at school I started doing a blog story. My friend, Jill, encouraged me to take things to the next level and with the new self-publishing options out there, I said why not.

Who and what inspired you to write?

--I write for fun. I can say that it was ever my dream to be a writer before I started working on Fiendish, but now that I have I realized I really enjoy it. So I would say my inspiration comes from the sheer joy of creating my characters, and their worlds, and telling their story.

When you are writing do you like to listen to music? What is on your playlist?

--Yes, I love having music in the background. Sometimes it’s whatever comes up in rotation on Pandora, but other times it’s more specific to my mood. Fiendish was a dark story, and it took special music to get me in the mood. A few titles on that playlist included Eminem “Love The Way You Lie”, Seether “Broken”, and few titles by Maroon 5 and Christina Perri.

Who is your favorite character in your book?

--I would have to say Macy is probably my favorite character because she’s the uncomplicated one. I love Seth (in all his craziness) but being in his head was tiring. Calida was also a heavy character because of all the stuff she was put through. Macy was a refreshing break.

Do you ever take characteristics or nuances from close friends or family when working on character development and if so has that friend or family member noticed and what was their response to it?

--No, I don’t think I did. At least not for this particular book.

What is your favorite book of all time?

--I can’t say I have a favorite of all time. I have books that I enjoy and some that stay with me more than others. The current one that fits that bill is the Dark Duet series by CJ Roberts. I read them after I’d started Fiendish and at a time when I thought no way would anyone love or even like about book with a MMC so unlikeable as Seth is. I read these books and realized that yeah it could happen.

Tell us in one sentence why we should read your books.

--Although the content is harsh, the underlying message is one of strength, courage, and survival.
