Saving Buddy by Nicola Owst ~ Book Review

Book Description:

'In my darkest hour, I reached for a hand and found your paw'

When Nicola found Buddy, abandoned and broken, she vowed to do all she could to help save him. What she didn't know at the time was that this little dog would in turn save her.

Monday morning, 27th April 2009.

The sat nav told us we'd reached our destination. The rain was pelting down, the kind that feels as if buckets of water are being chucked at the windscreen.

I'll never forget that day. The horror, fear and the uncertainty of what was to come are still etched on my memory. But I didn't know that in that moment, somewhere off the M1 in a place that seemed as unnerving as it was eerie, I would find something so precious that would change my life forever.

That was the day I discovered my Buddy, abandoned in a crate, unable to move and so frail that he only had moments to live. He stopped me in my tracks, and without pausing to think I scooped him up and quickly ran from the scene. This was no place for people or animals.

Slowly, as I learned to take care of this broken little dog, I began to realise with each new day that as I was saving him, he too was helping to free me from my past.

This is the story of Buddy and me: a remarkable true story of survival, hope, and never giving up, no matter how hard life gets.

Review:
This book caught my attention right from the cute doggy picture on the front cover to the book synopsis. I have rescued my Buddy (or as we call him Budrick) about 4 years ago and more recently we adopted our beautiful Lachinia. We also open a spot in our house and our hearts for one rescue foster dog at a time. This is something I feel so strongly about and can't stand watching poor puppies suffer at a humans hands. I wish I rescue more at a time.

This book really resonated with me. I have been lucky that the couple dogs we have adopted came to us as they were not wanted anymore but no harm physically was done to them (that we are aware of), mentally I am sure they have went through tremendous hurt. Nicola has a heart of gold picking Buddy up and not worrying what might happen to her when she left the property with him. Fighting for Buddy to make a full recovery from his horrendous start in life. The bond and love that Buddy and Nicola share through their story is so heartwarming. Nicola shares her personal struggles in life and the joys, along with all the dog shows Buddy took part in. I don't know a lot about Staffies but that they are in the "bad" dog rep. espescially in Ontario Canada as we are not allowed any kind of Pit bull/Staffordshire Terrier or even a dog that resembles them. Unfortunately there have been a few dogs over the years that I wanted to adopt but can't because of the ban. I don't believe these dogs are bad and that some where breed for the wrong reasons.

I give this book a 4 out of 5 stars as it was a heartwarming story of love, companionship and survival. I did find the author over used telling us that Staffies are not mean dogs and that they can be trusted. A couple mentions would have sufficed. Overall I did enjoy this book and hope all the best for Buddy and Nicola as they both have been through a lot.

Super Easy Dog Biscuits

Here is another recipe that I made when I was doing the Grain Mill blogger Challenge. We love making all natural treats for the WHOLE family.

This recipe uses Rice flour that I made using the grain mill. You will need a small cookie cutter approximately 1-1 1/2 inches. It can be a bone shape or any other shape you would like. I have a small heart on hand and that is what we used. They were just the perfect size for our medium sized dog. If you have a large breed you may want to use bigger.
Ingredients:
  • 1/2 Cup Whole Wheat Flour
  • 3/4 Cup Rice Flour
  • 1/4 Cup Rolled Oats
  • 2 tsp Baking powder
  • 6 Tbsp smooth natural peanut butter
  • 1 Tbsp of Molasses
  • 1/2 Cup milk

Instructions:
  • Preheat oven to 375 F
  • Mix together the flours, oats and baking powder.
  • Add peanut butter, milk and molasses, mix well.
  • Form mixture in a ball and roll out between two pieces of parchment paper to 1/4 inch thickness (thicker for bigger dogs if you would like but then your baking time is increased).
  • Cut out treats and place on cookie sheet.
  • Bake for 20 minutes (this will also depend on your oven and thickness of treats)
  • Cool on rack and store in air tight container. You can keep them in freezer or fridge.
  • We made close to 65 treats but it will depend on size of cutter and thickness.

Keeping our Pets Healthy ~ President’s Choice® Nutrition First food & treats

I talk a lot about how to keep ourselves and our family healthy but we also need to remember to keep our four legged friends fit and healthy also. Besides the obvious of taking our furry pals to the vet for regular check ups we need to remember they need lots of exercise, grooming and delicious healthy food & treats.

Our two beagles can be a huge handful but I have learned through reading and also trying that work for our two that they need a lot of exercise to stay fit and out of trouble, even that last one can be hard as Molly loves to make a mess out of the garbage. This is a huge safety issue as our girl has gotten into some things that she shouldn't have in the last few years. We are now super cautious with what we leave laying around or even in the garbage before leaving the house. I know you are likely thinking, just put a child latch on the cupboard and all will be fine. Not the case with Molly. We have had 3 latches, all different kinds and she still can get into the cupboard. We have now decided that bungee cords are were she is at for the moment. We have to put three on the cupboards and make sure nothing is close to the doors as she can still get it open enough to pull stuff out.

We get out for a lot of walks with Molly and Buddy to keep them healthy and fit. They love to head out to the trails for a nice sniff or to see what other animals are out and about that they can meet. We also let them chase each other around the house in bad weather and pull out the dog toys. The kids love playing with the dogs and their toys. This helps wear them out and keep them healthy.

If you don't know beagle LOVE their food! Some are super bad, Buddy may be in that category! We have to keep him away from the cat food. Molly is pretty good she will eat til full and move on. Buddy would just keep eating if you let him. We always look for healthy and natural dog foods to feed out beagles and President’s Choice® Nutrition First has been a great change for our two. In addition to their food we like to feed them healthy fruit & veggies and treats here and there.

President’s Choice® Nutrition First offers a wide variety of dog foods and treats for all breeds and sizes. One of their favorite foods is the Lamb & Brown Rice, this is a delicious combination of real lamb and brown rice. It is a dry dog food is made with specially selected ingredients for complete and balanced nutrition. What I like is that it includes omega-3 fatty acids to promote strong immunity along with a healthy skin and coat, including added vitamins and minerals for a healthy heart and healthy eyes.

We have tried a few of the treats and their favorite by far is the Nutrition First Chicken Strips. I was actually pleasantly surprised with this bag of treats. They are made from REAL chicken and dried for our dogs. These treats are formulated with Glucosamine and Chondroitin to help promote healthy joints and cartilage, this is big for beagles as they usually suffer hip issues later on down the road. There are no artificial preservatives added and no colours or artificial flavours. Also no corn, wheat, or soy. They are rich in protein low in fat and have no glycerine added. You should have seen the drool all over the floor after Buddy is done one of these treats.

Remember that our four legged friends are a big part of the family and need us to help them with staying healthy and fit. Check out President’s Choice® Nutrition First food & treats on their Website and find them in PC stores near you.

PC Nutrition First: Pet Health Tips

We have recently added to our four legged fur babies. We have added another hound to our family, his name is Buddy. Buddy is 6 years old and has been in a couple homes previous to finding his forever home with us and he girl Molly. Molly is our first hound and is now 3 years old. Both of them are a huge part of our family and we strive to feed them the best foods, vet visits and always looking for health tips to keep our babies happy and healthy for a very long time.

PC Nutrition First wanted to share with Genuine Jenn readers some tips for our furry friends from celebrity dog trainer Harrison Forbes. Not only is he a pet lover, but he has also worked with A-list celebs like Katherine Heigl, Jane Lynch and Joanna Krupa on everything from their pet's behaviour to charity events and animal rights causes. He's a champion of happy, healthy dog and has dedicated his life to our canine companions.

Perfecting Pet Health

Most of us can agree that leading a healthy, fulfilled life is all about balance. We strive to eat nourishing, delicious food, find a form of exercise we enjoy, broaden our horizons through lifelong learning and surround ourselves with people we love and trust. These fundamental building blocks to health and happiness are universally applicable – male, female, young or old; diet, exercise, education and socialization are essential for physical and emotional growth.

What many people don’t realize is that these basic principles apply to our pets too. To help Canadians celebrate their beloved fur babies and educate them about making nutritious choices on their behalf, the President’s Choice® Nutrition First® team has partnered with celebrity dog trainer Harrison Forbes.

Whether you are a new or seasoned dog owner, check out Harrison’s tips for dogs of all ages!

Enjoy First-Class Fuel

The number one contributor to a healthy lifestyle for pets and humans is diet. Like you, your pet should eat nutritious ingredients from all the essential food groups. Brands like President’s Choice® Nutrition First® make it easy for your pet to enjoy the same nutrient-rich foods you do by incorporating high-quality proteins as the main ingredient, along with wholesome grains, fruits and vegetables, pre and probiotics, and omega 3 and 6 fatty acids to nourish your pet’s body.

Get Physical

Most pet behaviour problems are rooted in frustration. Like people, dogs get bored and anxious when they are under-exercised. Being a good pet parent means finding time to play with your dog. Whether focused on mental stimulation (for example, using “smart toys”) or physical exercise (like a walk in the park), interactive activities are crucial for a healthy, well-behaved pup.

Educate Early

When it comes to pet parenting, education is essential – for both of you. To effectively train your dog, you need to invest time in understanding his genetic history so you can design a program that takes advantage of his natural instincts. As your pup learns good conduct, don’t forget to recognize and reward his progress. Treats like President’s Choice® Nutrition First® Grain-Free Biscuits are a nutritious way to reinforce and reward behaviour, help him enjoy the training experience and fuel his body.

Seek Out Puppy Pals

Taking your dog out on the town is key to teaching him how to interact with other people and animals. Just like human babies, dogs needs time to learn what they can and cannot do around others, and exposing them to other pets is a great way to help them establish relationships and learn to enjoy
spending time with furry friends. Plus, having a dog on your arm is a great way to meet like-minded friends!

Stay tuned for more pet information from our friends at
PC Nutrition First.

Maybe I should have just went back to bed yesterday!

Have you ever had one of those days where you just want to crawl back into bed and start the day all over again? I had one of those days yesterday. Actually it started Monday night. I did some laundry Monday after getting up from a nap (worked Sunday night). The sheets dried nice and I threw in our big blanket. This usually takes two rounds in the dryer as it is so big but it gets dried. My husband brought the blanket up for bed and threw it on the bed where I was already. It was still really damp. I thought that was weird but I didn't worry as it wasn't super wet and it would dry.

When I woke up Tuesday I realized I finally came down with that nasty head cold that has been going around. Great! I can't get sick right now. I had avoided it for almost 3 weeks. Hubby had it the week before I left for Blissdom Canada and I managed to not get it. Oh well it has finally found me. Now to work on getting better before the end of the month.

After having a coffee I decided to start a load of laundry and check out the dryer. I turned the knob and pushed the button to start the machine and nothing happened. I tried again, still nothing. Hmm, I guess this is dryer #2 that has died in 6 years. I will be hanging clothes outside for awhile until we figure out what we want to get. I am happy we don't have the white stuff on the ground yet.

I did get in a nice walk with Miss Molly after we got the kids on the bus. Yesterday we did a 6.98km walk in the morning and it felt great to get out and clear my head.
Just before lunch I feed the animals and checked in on our rabbit, Preston who is 9 and 1/2 years old. He didn't look good at all so I pulled him out to sit with me. He did not stay with me longer than 15 minutes after I picked him up. This was really hard on myself as I have had him for what seems like forever! Especially for a bunny. He was a beautiful chinchilla color New Zealand Giant and the friendliest bunny I have ever known. He wasn't a biter and would actually lick and suck on your finger.
He loved to hang out and hop around the house and play with the cats. I had to explain that Preston passed away to the kids when they arrived home and the tears started all over again. Both of the kids are very attached to all our pets and A has been looking after feeding Preston for awhile now. She took it pretty hard and wants to get a stuffy that looks just like him. He was suppose to live forever she said. P was upset and shed his tears but was able to understand that Preston lived a long and happy life. He is with Poppa up in Heaven and will be happy and healthy there.
After having such a rough morning I decided that a bucket of Chinese food from the place near us was in order. I took the short walk over and spent all of $5.65 on this very tasty lunch. It didn't make my day better but it did give me a full belly and some comfort food.

Get Fit ~ Week 5

Since I have been side lined for my Couch to 5km I have been walking up a storm. Last weekend I attended Blissdom Canada with my fellow bloggers and didn't get as much power walking as I wanted to because well *hangs head* my roomie and I slept in on Saturday and Sunday. On Friday though we got up at 6:30am to head down to the hotels fitness room and went for our power walk. We spent 30 minutes on the treadmill power walking. Better than nothing, right? I also am very proud that I didn't consume tons of liquid calories.. ok maybe tons of my calories were from the Tim Hortons coffee but I do take my coffee with just milk.

This past week I have really tried to push myself to increase the distance that Molly and I walk daily.

Monday - 4.78k
Tuesday - 5.87k & 4.75k
Wednesday - 5.96k
Thursday - 6.98k & 1.17k

The grand total this week is 29.51km and I still have today to get a good walk in. With the kids being home from school on a PA day I don't think I will get more than a 4 or 5km walk. I had this week off work which made it easy to walk everyday when the kids went to school. Over the next couple weeks I am going to get myself into a routine. The days I am not working are easy to get out for a walk, it is the days I need to come home and sleep while the kids are at school that are the hard days. Maybe I can see if I can get a 30 minute walk in before crashing into bed.

This week the weather has been amazing for October in Ontario Canada. Wednesday we had a really foggy morning and I got this photos in this post with my iPhone.

I weighed Molly at home this week and it looks like she may have lost 3 lbs already! This is great but we are having some troubles with cutting her food intake. She doesn't like to not eat 3 cups of food a day. We have tried to cut down to 2 cups over the day and she has been really annoying by the evening. We decided to go back up to 2 1/2 cups and we will get rid of the 1/2 a cup slower.
What did you do this week to help in your Get Fit journey?

Wordless Wednesday ~ Cuddle Time

My daughter and Miss Molly climbed into my bed to snuggle the other morning. Miss Molly loves to sleep under the covers in the cold weather.

Week 4 ~ Get Fit Doggy Edition

Last week I took Miss Molly to the vet for her yearly visit. I was a little concerned about her weight but at the same time I thought we have been very  good at keeping her active and watching what she eats (no table scraps, very minimal treats) so we should be okay.

Miss Molly did really well with being on the vets table at first and then she decided she didn't want to be there anymore. Being the big suck she is, she decided to give me a hug and hope I would do something for her. When I left her on the table she decided to literally jump into my arms and try to sit on my head. Hmm.....

She survived the appointment and so did I. All is well, she got her vaccinations and the dr said she is a healthy 18 month old but.... She is overweight. Humph, ok. I asked the dr what he thought was a good weight for her especially since she is a beagle and his answer was very shocking. She should be 30lbs! What? She is 37 lbs! How in the world am I going to get a beagle to lose 7 lbs???

He said exercise. We chatted about my new workout program and he said she is a healthy beagle so running would be good for her. Also big walks are great for weight loss and will help tire her out so she hopefully will be less anxious.
Miss Molly isn't just my walking/running buddy because I want her to be, it is now because she is on a weight loss program herself. Her goal 7lbs. We are also cutting back on the food as the more I think about it, she does get an extra serving by dinner time.

This past week we have increased our walks throughout the day to aim for 8-10km a day. Both Tuesday and Wednesday we completed this challenge. Today I am heading to Blissdom Canada and hope to get some fitness in before all the conference stuff happens on Friday and Saturday, this will leave my two travel days as my days of rest.

How to Turn Your Cats & Dogs Relationship from "Ruff" to "Purrfect" by IAMS

Today I have a fabulous guest post from our friends at IAMS. Do you have cats and dogs that sometimes or all the time don't get along? Then keep reading for some great tips to help them improve their relationship and make peace in the house.

The term fighting like cats and dogs can be taken quite literally when you have several four-legged friends at home. While some people identify themselves as a cat or dog person, at Iams, we are both cat and dog people. We understand the importance of maintaining relationships between furry friends and want to provide pet owners alike with resources to help cats and dogs get along. With these five tips, you can kiss the term cats rule and dogs drool goodbye.

1. Looking to play matchmaker?

If you have a cat and are planning to adopt a dog, try to find a breed with a known history of being accepting of cats. Traditionally, herding dogs, terriers, sight hounds and huskies get along best with cats, so keep an open mind and work together with your local shelter, pet store or independent breeder to find the perfect fit.

If you have a dog and are planning to adopt a cat, help teach your dog to behave appropriately around cats ahead of time. If your dog does not respond well to sit, down, stay or come, work on improving those actions to avoid havoc down the road.

2. Make the introductions

When bringing a new pet into the home, animals need time to get to know each other. They are more likely to fight or be unhappy if you try to force them together, so be sure to make proper introductions. Pick a spacious room, have a helper with you and keep tasty treats on-hand to reward pets for good behaviour. If your pets tend to be on the feisty side, make sure your cat’s claws are trimmed and dog’s are kept on a tight leash. Depending on your pet’s prior experiences, genetics and personalities, the introduction may take a few days to a few weeks – so be patient and ensure you have a safe place for your new pet where they can go and take a break and relax.

3. Dining alone is key

To create a positive atmosphere for your pets, feed cats and dogs their meals at the same time but remember to put them in separate rooms or parts of a room as they tend to eat at a different pace. As cats and dogs have different nutritional needs, keeping them separate during meals is important to their health. And since many dogs like to snack on cat food, having separate feeding spaces keeps your cat from losing meals to the dog. Dogs are omnivores, and cats are carnivores and they therefore have distinct dietary needs that are unique to each species. It is not appropriate to feed dog food to cats or cat food to dogs as their primary source of food. A nibble here or there doesn’t count. Dogs generally find cat food more palatable as it often has a higher content of protein and fat, especially the canned variety. Cats are probably just curious and will eat out of the dog bowl to just show everyone that they make all the rules and can do what they please. If you need help, visit iams.ca or ask a fellow pet owner for advice.

4.  Set the management mood

To help your cat or dog feel safe while adapting to the sounds and smells of other pets, make sure to keep them company. Don’t leave them alone together for long periods of time and supervise any activities that may have caused problems in the past. Remember to have special bonding time with each pet individually and be sure they all know whose boss.

5. When it doesn’t work out...

Remember, not all pets are meant to be best friends from day one. Don’t worry if yours are polite acquaintances - friendship takes time to build.

Litter One Eco Friendly Cat Litter Solutions - Review

We have a zoo in our house as I am sure you know by now. Four cats, a dog and a rabbit makes for a super busy house along with our two kids.

Cleaning up after our pets can be very time consuming and well not really pleasant but you have to do it, right? Recently we had the opportunity to check out a more Eco Friendly option for our cats litter box.

As I sit here thinking about what to write I really can't say there is a whole bunch of information to tell you on this new product. Not because it is a bad product but because of its simplicity. It really is that simple. Simply made and simple to use.

Litter One is a 100% Biodegradable Eco-friendly litter box that lasts for 4-6 weeks. It is made with  When you order your litter box it comes with everything you need to clean the box and it sets up in seconds. The box itself is made out of card board and the "litter" is also 100%

Natalie Robbins is the Founder of Litter One. Natalie is a cat lover that had a vision of creating a 100% American Made product that makes it Simple, Clean and Green to dispose of cat waste. Natalie grew up in the family lumber business, so she naturally mixed the two to develop her Litter One litter kits. Natalie's goal is for every cat family to have a Litter One litter kit delivered to their home on a monthly basis, creating a safer, more environmentally friendly product in their home which can be claimed “Made in the USA!” and “100% Biodegradable.”

Purchase Litter One on their website for $24.95 (Free shipping when you order 2 or more).  Right now use my custom code at checkout and receive $5 off your Litter One Litter Kit! Coupon Code JL12561

My thoughts: This system was great. I set it up before heading away for a week and didn't come home to a stinky box. Hubby said he cleaned the "regular" kitty box just shake for the "used" litter to go to the bottom and scoop the poop into poop bags that come along with the kit. My momma kitty isn't too sure about the box but the 2 other kitties love the box. It doesn't have a smell and no dust which is great for someone like myself with allergies. Three weeks later and it is still working well with little smell. Kittens are still loving it and I have caught Momma cat in it also.

First Rescue Dog For the Kids

As you can likely tell in our house we love 4 legged furbabies. Last week was a busy week with P in a sports camp. As we were coming home from picking up P from camp we stopped at one of the busiest intersections in our town. When we were waiting for the light to turn green I noticed this little dog jumping up and down on the side walk near one of the vehicles in front of us. I looked around and didn't see a owner anywhere behind us and wondered who's little dog this is. I also wondered if the people in the car where going to get the dog or just drive off. After waiting a minute or two I decided I needed to pick up the dog myself before it ran out into the busy street. I put on my four way flashers and jumped out of our van to get this little dog.

This little dog was super friendly and warmed up to the kids within seconds. We toured the neighborhood asking if anyone knew the dog but nobody did. We then went home to see if anyone reported a lost dog to our local shelter or animal control. No luck but we gave all the information to the animal control people and then we wait.
Molly and the "Little One" (as we named it) got along great and went for a couple walks together and spent time bonding. I kept reminding the kids that we are only having the Little One until we find its owner and that we are not to think it will be our dog. They did really well with this.

The next morning I received a call from Animal Control but after talking to the lady she said never of the calls she got that morning were for the dog I was describing. So we wait some more. I sent off pictures to the animal control to have for when she would get a call.

Friday afternoon arrived and Animal control came by to scan the dog and came up with no chip but he said he would go back into the area we found the dog and see if he could find the house. A couple hours later we got a call telling us that the owner has been found and would be coming for her dog.

It was a tearful goodbye from A but P did really well keeping it together and telling his sister that we should be happy that the dog has its owner again.

I am super proud of the kids for helping me look after this little dog that lost its way. I am really considering being a foster for a rescue shelter in the future. We first need a bigger place with more area for dogs to run.

Have you ever found a lost animal? Where you able to find its owner(s)?
