Camp Carnage ~ First Book in New Horror Series Night Terrors!

Night Terrors is a series of horror books for young adults. It was launched in July 2014 by Elliot Arthur Cross and Joshua Winning, two genre authors who decided to join forces and take over the world. Sort of. There's more about them  at elliotarthurcross.com and joshuawinning.com

Camp Carnage is the first book in the Night Terrors catalogue and is released in paperback and eBook formats on 1 August 2014. Further Night Terrors novels will be released throughout the year.

Joshua Winning: “Camp Carnage is very much inspired by the slasher films we watched growing up. The idea came to me after I watched a documentary about gay summer camps. I thought it would be really funny to combine the story of a gay camp with a Friday The 13th-esque slasher.”

Elliot Arthur Cross: “We wanted to tackle the very real issue of gay camps in a tongue-in-cheek way. Those camps really do exist and they seemed like the perfect setting for a horror story. The scares pretty much wrote themselves!”

Camp Carnage Synopsis

In the summer of 1984, Billy Collins is sent to his own personal Hell – summer camp. The remote Camp Genesis offers desperate parents a place to “straighten” out their gay teenagers with the help of the puritanical Katherine Creevey.

Besides the typical horsing around, campfire tales and summer games, the Genesis program forces gay and questioning teens into humiliating gender-based lessons. While Billy wants nothing more than to escape Camp Genesis, he can’t help worrying that something even more sinister is hiding just out of sight.

Unknown to Billy, two campers were murdered three years ago. Just days after Billy and the new campers arrive, people start to go missing, and it’s up to Billy and his new friend Jem to find out what’s really going on. Is a maniac on the loose? Is history repeating itself? One thing’s for sure — at Camp Genesis, you have to fight to survive…

Reading Challenge 2014 Update

I decided to do a quick reading challenge update. If you haven't read what my reading challenge way take a peek and come back to see how I have been doing.

My book challenge this year on Goodreads is 40 books. As of today (so far) I have read 38 books. I have one book I will be finishing tonight for a Blog tour post tomorrow. My Goodreads challenge was set up after I posted on my reading challenge on my blog. I forgot to change the post to reflect the update.

I wanted to start two (2) new series and finish four (4) series from last year.

Starting series are not hard at all. It seems like there are so many great ones out there both from main stream and indie authors. I have started tons of new series this year so far and we are only at the end of July. I really need to make sure I don't start too many more or I will have a hard time keeping up. Here are a few I have recently started that you may want to check out.

For the sweet romance lovers check out The Stitching Post Romance series, or contemporary romance Jane's Melody. Looking for something a little more hot in the romance department? Personal Protection book #1 is a quick and hot read or the Wild Rush series.
For a darker series check out The Beautiful-Ugly Trilogy, I am reading book two right now and will post a review soon. The Reason series by Zoey Derrick was started in January and also finished (four books!) in March it is more of a romance paranormal genre. The Mark of the Hummerbird is another one that I started by a Canadian author Jessica Gollub (see link below for review).

What did I finish so far? Primula Bonds Trilogy was finished in May with the last book being released. I need to go through all the series I have started last year and see which I can finish for the other three.

Read different genres that I don't normally pick up as of late ~ paranormal/scifi/urban fantasy/religion/self-help/documentaries/memoirs. I wrote that I wanted to read at least 1 in each category.
I have been able to accomplish some of these already and working on more soon enough.

For the non fiction genre I will break it down into further groups.
As for the other genre here are a few of what I have read so far.
  • Paranormal - The Reason series by Zoey Derrick.
  • Dystopian - The Mark of the Hummingbird by Jessica Gollub
  • Suspense/Medical -  To Sleep...Prechance to Die, I really enjoyed this one. It was a bit of a mix with suspense/medical/romance.
Read at least 2 Canadian authors that I haven't read before.

I have read a few books by Canadians and I have a few more on my to be read list. Here are a few I have read - Blinders Off by Tessa Brookfield, Great-Grandmas Gifts by Marianne Jone, The Mark of the Hummingbird by Jessica Gollub and also Inspiration in Action is by Kathie Donovan who is also a native to my home town area! I look forward to reading the other books on my list. Keep a watch for some others.

Read 5 indie authors I have not read before.

Wow this one has been super easy and I don't know why I put it so low. A lot of the above books are indie authors that I haven't read before and here are a few more. Carmel Harrington, Emelle Gamble, Elise Alden, so many great authors.

Read more cookbooks.

Ok so this one I am still working on. I have one cookbook on my Kindle that is almost ready to be reviewed.

I have also started a new feature on Saturdays called Author Spotlight Saturdays and have had a blast learning about all the great authors out there!

How are you doing on your reading challenge? Are you challenging yourself with specific tasks or just a number of books? I would love to hear what you are reading. Post a comment below or send me an email.

RIO 2 ~ Now out on DVD & Blu-ray Combo!

The family was super excited to hear that there was going to be a new Rio movie and even more excited when it arrived on our doorstep the other day! The kids loved the first one and say this one is also AWESOME!

Grace of Flossophy by Ruth J. Hartman ~ Book Review

Book Synopsis:

What happens when a dental hygienist falls in love with her patient? That's what Grace Hart finds out when she meets Bruce Gardener. The problem? Grace's boss has a strict policy against relationships with patients. Can Bruce and Grace find a way to be together, without her boss finding out?

Purchase a copy on Amazon Kindle.

About the Author:

Ruth J. Hartman spends her days herding cats, and her nights spinning sweet romantic tales that make you smile, giggle or laugh out loud. She, her husband, and their three cats, love to spend time curled up in their recliners watching old Cary Grant movies. Well, the cats, Maxwell, Roxy and Remmie, sit in the people's recliners. Not that the cats couldn't get their own furniture. They just choose to shed on someone else's. You know how selfish those little furry creatures can be.
Ruth, a left-handed, cat-herding, Jeep driving, farmhouse-dwelling romance writer uses her goofy sense of humor as she writes tales of lovable, klutzy women and the men who adore them. Ruth's husband and best friend, Garry, reads her manuscripts, rolls his eyes at her weird story ideas, and loves her in spite of her penchant for insisting all of her books have at least one cat in them. Or twelve. But hey, who's counting?

Review:

Another cute book from Ruth J. Hartman. This one is a romance about a dental hygienist who has a very nasty boss. Grace is a cat lover and have 6 cats! She meets a handsome man named Bruce who comes in for an appointment and ends up getting more dental work then needed as he wants to get to know Grace. Guess what? Bruce is also a cat lover. It really is a match made in heaven. Having to avoid being seen together because of Grace's boss Bruce sets up many appointments to have done in the dental office with Grace so they can spend time together. This is a cute romance and a very quick read. I found it was an easy book to read while the kids have been off school as it isn't a book that you will easily get lost in if you put it down after only reading a few pages. Both Grace and Bruce were really fun characters but Grace's boss on the other hand was a horrible man.

I give this book a 3.75 out of 5 stars.

HEXBUG Warriors TRANSFORMERS ~ Review

Now that my son is hooked on HEXBUGS I am sure you will see a few more reviews on Genuine Jenn. This new bug P had the opportunity to check out is one of the new HEXBUG Warrior TRANSFORMERS ~ Galvatron. These little bugs are very neat, there are eight Transformer warriors to collect. The one P received has two little pieces he can change around on his "bug".

They scurry along with realistic bug-like movements. They actually remind me of centipedes, as they move super fast around the house. P set Galvatron on his way around the house and we had more than just the kids playing along with him. The cats were having a blast also! They are very fun to watch as they bump into something and venture in another direction.
Each HEXBUG Warrior TRANSFORMER character is powered by a tiny motor and features the clip-on armour backpacks. They are run on little watch like batteries. You can pick up more batteries where you buy your HEXBUG or on the HEXBUG website. These little guys are recommended for ages 6+

For more information check out HEXBUG, "Like" on Facebook and Follow @HEXBUG on Twitter.

Author Spotlight Saturday ~ Meet Luke Ahearn + Giveaway!

Please welcome Luke Ahearn to Genuine Jenn! If you are a Zombie fan you will want to read on to learn more about Luke and his book Euphoria-Z!

Tell us a little bit about your book.

Euphoria-Z is a traditional zombie apocalypse novel with plot twists, well-developed characters, and a unique beginning.

When was your first book published?

Over ten years ago, I was up at the wee hours of the morning, surfing the web. I have no idea what I was looking for, but the last thing on my mind was getting published or submitting a book proposal. I came across the submissions page for a publisher that was looking for computer game development books. I spent about twenty minutes filling in the submission form, skipping large chunks of it. There were questions like, “why do you think there is a market for a book of this type?” and I would answer, “because you are looking for people to write these types of books.” Then I went to sleep and forgot about it completely. The next day, I did all my usual stuff: coffee, etc., and when I checked my email later in the morning, there was a message from the publisher. The subject line was something like, “Can you call me ASAP?” So it turns out, they had an author who took an advance, blew them off, and never even started working on the book. Worse still, he was lying and telling them all along he was making progress on the book. He was a well-known author of these types of books at the time, so they took his word for it until it was close to the launch date. They asked me if I could write a book in two months, so I said yes. I had a lot of leeway as I wrote the book, since they were desperate to get a book (any book) finished and on the market. I ended up writing a book that sold far better than any of the original author’s work. I was fortunate, blessed, whatever (I hate the term lucky for personal reasons) and after I blew the doors off the joint with that first book, the publishers were coming to me.

Are you currently working on anything?

The next book in the Euphoria Z series. I am delighted that people are already asking me when they next one comes out.

When did you first consider yourself a “writer”?

Not until recently. I’d been published for well over ten years, but for some reason, never considered myself a writer. I started to question this and realized my definition of a writer was wrong. I read somewhere a long time ago that if you are writing, you are a writer; when you stop writing, you are not. I just accepted that I am writer because I decided to consider myself one. Being a writer is a call no one can make but the individual.

Who and what inspired you to write?

My wife.

When you are writing to you like to listen to music? What is on your playlist?

I could score this entire book (Euphoria-Z) with ambient sounds. When I write, it feels real to me and I can hear, smell, and feel it all. I struggle to describe what feels so real to me without sounding clichéd or too verbose. I do play music to distract me and drown out the world, but it has nothing to do with what I am writing. I listen to old jazz, mostly from the 50’s and 60’s, because it makes good background noise; pleasant and inert. It has a kind of energetic but relaxed vibe that I need to write. I need the energy to keep going and the relaxed vibe to keep going at a steady pace; it’s not rushed or impatient.

Who is your favorite character in your books?

The lead character in my sword and sorcery series Dark Deeds and Black Magics. Xanthus is a city-dwelling scoundrel in his late teens who can go anywhere in society, but fits in nowhere. His family is wealthy, so he is not trusted or even liked by the poor and working class. But his family is nouveau riche, so he is not accepted by the old money, either. He is left alone in a large city to babysit his wealthy father’s home and is incredibly bored, so he dabbles in thievery, debauchery, and rarely a bit of responsibility. He meets a few other oddballs and they generally participate in shenanigans that are sometimes orchestrated by the gods. I love writing him because I love the setting of Kingspoint, the massive maze-streeted city with its magics and dangers. The prequel to the series is available now and contains a sample of the actual series.

Do you ever take characteristics or nuances from close friends or family when working on character development and if so has that friend or family member noticed and what was their response to it?

Oh yes and yes. If there is anything recognizable it’s usually an inside joke that the person appreciates.

What is your favorite book of all time?

I would say The Hobbit is my favorite book. It’s what really woke up that part of my brain that said, “I want to be a writer.” I know I’ve read it all the way through at least eight times and then chunks of it at various other times. I love the first half of the book in particular.

Tell us in one sentence why we should read your books.

I honestly write to give to the reader. I want to give the experience that kept me going as a child. I am getting a lot of great feedback so I am comfortable saying you should read my books because you will enjoy them. It’s hard to find a good read.

Pulo Philippine Cuisine ~ Review

Pulo is an authentic collection of sauces and marinades inspired by the 7000 Islands of the Philippines.

With over 7000 islands, the country is a dynamic mixture of different cultures: Malay, Chinese, Spanish and Indian. These influences have all contributed to the richness of Philippine cooking – the original fusion cuisine.

Pulo Philippine Cuisine is made in Canada. There are no artificial flavours, colours or preservatives and they are vegan!
The Pulo line includes five fabulous flavors! Three marinades which include ~ Guimaras Island Mango Chili, Samal Island Pineapple Tamarind and Cebu Island Lemongrass Atsuete and two cooking sauces ~ Tinaga Island Coconut Adobo and Luzon Island Kare Kare Toasted Peanut.

The name Pulo is Filipino for “Island.” Pulo celebrates the country’s rich food history and deep social connections created when sharing a meal - a celebration that’s at the heart of Philippine life.

Recently we had the chance to try out Pulo Philippine Cuisine and I have to tell you I think I found my go to stir fry sauce! I absolutely love both of the creamy sauces and find it hard to choose which is my favorite. My husband says he favors the coconut one but I love both!
Stir fry, Pulo, Sauce, Food
Luzon Island Kare Kare Toasted Peanut with beef
We tried both of the cooking sauces in stir fry and found both to be very nice, not too spicy but enough heat to be able to say it is spicy. I love the peanut as I am a huge peanut butter fan! Each sauce was thick and coated our veggies very nicely. The coconut sauce was very tasty and creamy. I found this one spicy. I was actually really surprised I liked this one so much as I am not a big on coconut flavors.
Pulo, Food, Sauce, Stir fry
Tinaga Island Coconut Adobo with chicken
The marinades are great! All of them are very distinct and flavorful. We marinaded chicken and pork chops for the BBQ and once I ended up doing chicken in the oven with the Mango Chili. All of the meats ended up tender, juicy and full of flavor. Some spicy but not over powering that I wasn't able to eat it.

Visit Pulo Philippine Cuisine online to find great recipes and more info on all these great flavors! Don't for get to "Like" Pulo Cuisine on Facebook & follow on Twitter

Review:

My daughter and I read this book together. My daughter will be going into grade two this fall and found it a great read for her. She read most of it on her own with some help from myself so it helped challenge her but also help with words she already knows.

My daughter loved the pictures and she thought it was really neat that Grandma was busy making clothes, toys and beautiful quilts for her children and grand children. We both enjoyed the font that were coloured different sizes. Some were also striped or polka dots. A great book to read with kids. I love that after all the years of making wonderful gifts that Grandma decided to take a rest at the lake!

My daughter and I give this book 5 stars!

About the Author:

Hi, I'm Ryan Winfield. I'm a 39-year-old writer living in Seattle. Author of the New York Times, USA Today, and Wall Street Journal Bestseller Jane's Melody: A Novel, South of Bixby Bridge, and The Park Service Trilogy. I hope you enjoy my books and I'd love to hear from you here or on Facebook.

Review:

I don't even know where to start with this review. I loved this book! It hooked me from the very start and had me feel many emotions throughout. I can't even imagine the pain Jane would feel after losing her daughter and I hope to never have to feel that pain. Ryan Winfield is a fabulous writer, I really felt like I could envision the book playing in my mind. Each scene was describe just perfectly to feel apart of but not over done, if you know what I mean.

Now I know what people are talking about when they say their "book boyfriend"! I have found mine in Caleb. He is such a mysterious man at first and then we see the loving/caring side along with his hard work ethic. He is the man every woman would want to fall in love with and every man would want to be like. The age thing was a great part of the storyline, the older women that finds a mature younger hot man. The struggles Jane has with the age and the insecurities of not being good enough for Caleb was torture for her. This is a beautiful love story with some very hot spots for sure!

I found myself loving all the characters in this story, even the crusty Mrs. Hawthorne, though at first I wasn't too sure I would like her.

I give this a 5 out of 5 stars, a wonderful story of love, loss and healing. I look forward to reading Jane's Harmony!

He didn’t commit suicide but who’s going to believe her...
Frustrated at being fired from her latest job and overwhelmed by her consolatory family, Sam decides to move to the family’s cabin at the lake. A place she hasn’t been since her dad committed suicide there, twenty years before. Or did he? Snooping is something she’s good at but someone seems to be taking offense to her looking too closely at what has been happening at the lake. What she discovers is shocking. Now she must uncover what’s real and what’s not. All that she learned growing up, may be false.
Keegan, who has recently moved to the area to finish his latest book, is also trying to find out if his grandfather, who’d passed away ten years before, died of natural causes or was murdered? The descendants of the four families, who own the land around the lagoon, are dying off.
Since Sam and Keegan are the only ones questioning the deaths, they find themselves working together to seek the truth. Are people being murdered? Who would benefit from their deaths? You can purchase Tainted Waters on amazonBarnes and Noblesmashwordskobo, and iTunes.

My review:

Maggie writes a terrific suspense story! If you like thrillers you will enjoy this story.

I did find it difficult in the beginning with the abundance of character introductions, however once I figured out who was who, and why they were there, the plot thickened and it was impossible to put down. I really enjoyed this story, it is filled with continued misguidance, and will keep you captivated till the end with the surprisingly conclusion. I would give this book 4 out of 5, great job Maggie.

Disney Planes: Fire & Rescue Review

If you are looking for something to do with the kids this week, maybe somewhere to go that is air conditioned, check out Disney's newest movie in theatres Planes: Fire & Rescue

We went to see this fantastic film over the weekend and the kids loved it! I am not surprised as I don't think there is a Disney movie that we don't like. I didn't realize it but the theatre we went to offered this movie in 3D! I highly recommend seeing it in 3D as it really is a neat experience to fly with Dusty and his friends on his adventure to become a firefighter. Dusty flies over the water rapids and through the flame engulfed forest to learn how to be a firefighter and even do a couple rescues.

I as an adult loved the little jokes and cute little things that an adult would pick up on like the nuts and bolts they have a the table in the bar along with the motor oil drinks. It was also a great way to teach the kids about how airplanes really do help with putting out big forest fires around the world.

The kids sat on the edge of the seat waiting to see what would happen to Dusty if he didn't get a new gear box to continue racing.

Of course in the end there is a happy ending that sends everyone home happy that all worked out for Piston Peak and Dusty.

Mani Monday ~ Painted Paisley {Jr}

For awhile now I have been meaning to try the Jr wraps on my fingers and toes to see how they can fit on adults. I decided that I would try out the Painted Paisley after going through all the Jamberry wraps my daughter has. I did both my toes and fingers but here is the fingers for now. I will post another photo of my toes and the sheet to show how much was used.

They are a bit flashy and maybe for some adults you wouldn't want to choose these but I thought they would be fun for summer while I was on vacation.

Haven't tried Jamberry nail wraps? Send me an email to request a sample if you live in the US or Canada. Watch for a Jamberry giveaway this summer also!

Author Spotlight Saturday ~ Meet Emelle Gamble + Giveaway!

Can you believe that we are now half way through July?!? This week I would like everyone to Welcome Emelle Gamble to Author Spotlight Saturday! I recently read and reviewed Emelle's Secret Sister

Tell us a little bit about your book(s) and yourself.

My books are always a little bit off-kilter from their main genre. SECRET SISTER is a solid romance with a huge Paranormal plot set-up. MOLLY HARPER and DUETS are women’s fiction with an extraordinary secret, almost like a mystery. DATING CARY GRANT is a sweet romance with a ghost. There, I said it. And strangely, except for the ghost part, my books are just like me, a little bit off-kilter.

When was your first book published?

1990 by Harlequin Intrigue. They published 7 romantic suspense, then I quit writing for several years because of LIFE and then I started  my huge, astonishingly successful comeback with SECRET SISTER published by SoulMate Publishing. So I’ve been writing for over twenty-five years. And, after writing that sentence,  I feel like I need a glass of wine.

Are you currently working on anything?

HA! Yes, I am currently working on completing a new romantic suspense/women’s fiction novel called KISS ME TWICE about a woman whose mother has early onset Alzheimers’ disease and whose ex-lover might be an imposter. See what I mean about off-kilter story ideas? I also have a noir mystery done, and am working on a series of novellas anchored at a location that disappears from time to time. The craziness continues…

Why did you decide to become an Author?

I mean, what else could I be with ideas like this?

Who and what inspired you to write?

Daphne DuMaurier. Rosamunde Pilcher. Sue Grafton. P.D.James. Everyone else whose book covers stared at me in libraries and stores…

When you are writing to you like to listen to music? What is on your playlist?

Nope. This mind needs quiet.

Who is your favorite character in your books?

If I had to choose a favorite in any book I’ve written to date, I’d say Nick Chance. He’s the hero in SECRET SISTER and his love is tested to the extreme, and he comes through. He’s cute, flawed, loyal, confused and I love him.

Do you ever take characteristics or nuances from close friends or family when working on character development and if so has that friend or family member noticed and what was their response to it?

Yes. No. No one ever sees themselves in books. I wrote DATING CARY GRANT based on a dear friend’s stubborn hope she’d find ‘Mr. Perfect’…she loves the book but has never seen that the character is her, her, her. Color me lucky!

What is your favorite book of all time?

This is an impossible question. This is similar to who is your favorite child. But I’ll give you five…The Great Gatsby. The Password to Larkspur Lane. The Shell Seekers. Gone With the Wind. One fish two fish red fish blue fish.  All are fabulous, memorable, felt original and real.

Tell us in one sentence why we should read your books.

Because if you do you will be entertained and, according to many readers, will not be able to put the book down.
